TUI low deposit - August holiday

holidayheadache · 06/04/2020 23:45

Another holiday one - sorry!

I've got a long haul holiday booked for the end of August through TUI. So far I have only paid £250 but as this is part of the low deposit scheme, a second deposit payment is due at the end of the month of an additional £250.

I'm under no illusion that this holiday will go ahead unfortunately. Does anyone know what will happen if I don't pay this? I understand that they can go to small claims court but is this realistic under the circumstance?

It seems ridiculous for us to pay money for something we're highly unlikely to benefit from.

Thanks!

It may be worth calling @GingerFoxInAT0phat to clarify. I did have to wait over an hour on hold but the chap I spoke to was extremely helpful and said our payment date would still show on the app as tomorrow but he had changed it on the backend so we’d have no problems with not paying. He also said the finance team are so busy sorting out refunds they have no time to be looking into who hasn’t paid on time

That’s what I’m relying on given that I haven’t paid the remaining deposit and won’t be paying the final balance in the next few weeks. Having says that I did receive an email noting that I hadn’t paid the deposit but I’m assuming that was a system generated email?

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 25/04/2020 13:00

Thanks Turnedout, I’ll give them a ring on Monday and see if they will extend it.

Also need to look into what happens to my insurance policy and airport car parking etc.

Nearlyadoctor · 25/04/2020 13:48

@GingerFoxInA0phat - is your insurance an annual policy? Ours is with virgin and they have said as long as the original booking was prior to 13/3 and the amended booking is the same reference number we would be covered for Covid. Policy must also be renewed with no break.

Rainsun1 · 25/04/2020 13:54

@Rollergirl11 I had the same issue. It’s because TUI staff are WFH.

Rainsun1 · 25/04/2020 14:01

@bigbadoldbag that’s great. I was wondering about these holiday sites

bigbadoldbag · 25/04/2020 14:52

@Rainsun1 I rebooked with them after having the holiday cancelled through Thomas Cook last year and it was a much more pleasant experience than that fiasco. I think someone is trying to tell me something
🤣

LimitIsUp · 25/04/2020 14:52

.

HappyKatieA · 26/04/2020 00:52

Thank you everyone for your input; whilst I wish we weren't in this position, we are, and it's good to know what others are thinking and doing...
I think I've made a decision to sit this one out, they now have our full deposit, and it's likely we'll get news from the government soon , or indeed TUI will add another date for refunds... I'm not going to pay anything more until I know more...

Rainsun1 · 26/04/2020 07:35

You have to pay the remaining balance of your holiday other wise as a customer you would be breaching contract. I’m in the same position but my holiday is quite a while away yet with TUI. They told me this.

Nearlyadoctor · 26/04/2020 08:19

@RainSun1 - I think people are aware of that but obviously reluctant to pay what may be thousands for a holiday they know won’t happen. Therefore options are to move holidays on for a year or whenever so that when payment finally becomes due things are clearer or to forgoe their deposits.

Rainsun1 · 26/04/2020 08:47

You still have to pay the balance if you were to due to fly September 2020 and you want to move 2021July. @nearlyadoctor

Chocolate123 · 26/04/2020 08:56

Was due to go early July balance was due last week. Was told by company to pay balance then move holiday to when I want. I've moved my holiday to April 21.

Nearlyadoctor · 26/04/2020 09:13

@Rainsun1 - Thank you for flagging that, that’s not what I was told by the person on the phone, planning on moving mine in 2 weeks when the remainder of the deposit becomes due. Will definitely ring them and double check as I’m not giving them the money over a year ahead.

Nearlyadoctor · 26/04/2020 09:38

@CaptainMerica @HappyKatieA - did you both amend your bookings on the website and then the payment dates changed? As you can seen from recent post @Rainsun1 says she had to pay in full still.( did you do yours over the phone @RainSun1
I’m more than happy to amend but not prepared to pay in full this year.

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 26/04/2020 10:15

Nearlyadoctor, I’ve amended mine from this September to Sep 21, the rest of the low deposit has stayed the same but the remaining balance has moved to next year too.

TUI low deposit - August holiday
Nearlyadoctor · 26/04/2020 11:13

Brilliant @GingerFoxIn0phat - that’s exactly what I was hoping.

HappyKatieA · 26/04/2020 11:19

@Nearlyadoctor - we haven't changed ours yet, as we're going with another family, I'm waiting to hear from them as to what they want to do...
I don't want to pay the balance this year if we move it to next. I have paid both deposits though, and our balance isn't due until 6th May, so as long as we change it before then we'll hopefully be ok?!

holidayheadache · 26/04/2020 11:35

I've decided to pay the remainder of my deposit and then sit tight. I'll either forfeit it or consider something for next year but hopefully there'll be more guidance out before I'm due to pay a balance!

HappyKatieA · 26/04/2020 12:12

@holidayheadache, yes, we're doing the same.

Paddingtonthebear · 26/04/2020 12:17

We’ve just this week paid the remainder of the TUI deposit and moved the holiday from August 2020 to August 2021. We tried ignoring the email payment reminder received last week about paying but we got another email saying they would take customers to court if they don’t pay

CaptainMerica · 26/04/2020 13:02

@Nearlyadoctor yes, the date for final payment changed to 3 months prior to the new date when I changed it through the website.

(I had already paid the full deposit though, an initial £200 then additional £600. I think the second deposit installment wouldn't change.)

Nearlyadoctor · 26/04/2020 13:45

@CaptainMerica that’s great, thanks for replying. Our 2nd deposit payment is due 6th May which I’m more than happy to pay as long I know we don’t need to pay the final payment this year.

Jedstre · 26/04/2020 16:09

I’m still really not sure what to do. Holiday due in Aug. Email this weekend with reminder to pay £600 remaining deposit, with full amount due in another few weeks. DH wants us to ignore it and not pay anything else.

If I pay the remaining deposit can you then change holiday to 2021? The website suggests we will be charged to change it at this stage but from messages from @Paddingtonthebear @GingerFoxInAT0phat And @CaptainMericasuggest you can change without charge? @Rollergirl11what have you decided? Your dates are very similar to mine.

Paddingtonthebear · 26/04/2020 17:20

We have rebooked a different hotel and resort , it was about £400 more for a different hotel and resort, no charge for the rebooking itself, we just “moved” to next year
