This thread should be deleted. The vitriol is beyond belief - I am surprised that I am surprised.

Just because it's a public forum, doesnt mean that it is compulsory to spout awful fucking shitty comments. Christ - I have been on MN since 2001, I know there are a lot of opinions/.. ism that are at odds with my own views. Generally ok with letting the twats spout their hateful shite.

To wish ill on a seriously ill person, is the lowest of the low.

Fucking hell....

Crispsginchoc · 06/04/2020 00:57

It’s odd. I’ve seen threads deleted for comments which aren’t half as vile as some of the ones on here.

plus3 · 06/04/2020 01:00

@alloutoffucks the Brompton is indeed taking COVID -19 patients ( I know as I work there)

Sammymommy · 06/04/2020 01:01

@alloutoffucks I think we've got the point that you're not that fond of him Wink

PointlessUsername · 06/04/2020 01:02

Wishing Boris a speedy recovery.

Cailleach1 · 06/04/2020 01:04

It is just dreadful, isn't it? Wishing CV on people. Oh hang on, that is what the gov't wanted for 'herd immunity'.
I agree the term disgusting would cover that.

alloutoffucks · 06/04/2020 01:04

@Sammymommy I have said nothing against him on this thread at all.
But catastrophising is not helpful.

alloutoffucks · 06/04/2020 01:06

And the chances are that he will recover. Most people do.

Sammymommy · 06/04/2020 01:08

@Cailleach1 to be fair, they did practice what they preached at least Wink

Butterymuffin · 06/04/2020 01:08

Johnson will stay in St Thomas for "as long as needed". So not overnight

It was stupid to suggest he might be out tomorrow. If he's so ill he needs to be hospitalised, overnight isn't going to do anything. Why minimise it like that? It's a serious illness.

alloutoffucks · 06/04/2020 01:14

The line about it being for tests fits with him only being in overnight. But that obviously was not true.

DarnedSocks · 06/04/2020 01:15

They didn't wish it on people. They fucked up by beimg too slow to act, and panicked about the NHS being unprepared to deal with a pandemic (a result of thirty years of mismanagement and underfunding from both main parties). They also had their heads in the sand, like too many people. Too many on here and who I know in real-life were up in arms at any suggestion of strong preventative action being taken. Too few people, government and general public alike, heeded the warning from China. I don't want anyone to die from this including Boris. He's messed up but he's not evil. He's also a father, son, brother, with a pregnant fiancée. I hope he recovers.

alloutoffucks · 06/04/2020 01:21

The chances are he will recover.
But of course he is human and may be one of the unlucky ones.

CatAndHisKit · 06/04/2020 01:21

I find it more alarming that there is no word about Chris Whitty.
I wish Boris well, he is likely to recover without a very intrusive ventilation, being middle-aged and generally healthy.

He's in for the lung scan.

ploughingthrough · 06/04/2020 01:22

Oh my word some people on here. I hope he has a speedy recovery and his body can fight off the virus. Poor man, like anyone else with a severe whack of this.

Didkdt · 06/04/2020 01:23

Herd immunity was built around the vulnerable taking shelter which the government immediately set up the process for to protect the NHS and us

alloutoffucks · 06/04/2020 01:23

He is not just in for a scan. If that was the case he would have it and return home again. Hospital is not the best place to be unless you really need to be there. There is too much risk of picking up another infection.

alloutoffucks · 06/04/2020 01:25

@Didkdt I kind of don't think this is the thread for it. But that is untrue. Herd immunity was talked about long before the shielded group had even be defined. And lots of people in the shielded group still have not had any support.

bettybeans · 06/04/2020 01:26

I'm no fan of his but hope he recovers quickly, and when he does, I hope he uses his experience to sharpen his mind, find a little compassion and re-think his attitude - especially towards the NHS.

There's little doubt he's more ill than they're letting on though. I hope his girlfriend and bump are alright.

SuckingDieselFella · 06/04/2020 01:34

@Cailleach1

"This is what he wanted, isn't it? At the beginning the British gov't ( esp. Boris) were saying that they wanted enough people to get it for 'herd immunity' in the population.

They had to change tack pretty sharpish afterwards, but this is what he advocated in the beginning."

No that's garbage.

There was never a government policy of herd immunity. This was media speculation. Their policies have been discussed at the daily press briefings and published. Nobody, and definitely not Boris, has ever discussed herd immunity.

You are using something you imagined he said to spite him. When he's in hospital with a potentially fatal disease and has a pregnant fiancé. Would you like some moron to do this if a member of your family were in hospital?

Didkdt · 06/04/2020 01:41

@alloutoffucks I'm in the shielded group and was well aware by the time of the herd immunity speech that I needed to shield
I agree that there is little support but it does seem EU regulation which we are paying to adhere to, us preventing supermarkets accessing the database
Sainsburys at least seems to be try6
Ocado is trading their customers by revenue to decide slot Tesco's is releasing slots randomly and Waitrose is ignoring everyone

alloutoffucks · 06/04/2020 01:41

Herd immunity was a government policy. I can't believe you are denying it.

alloutoffucks · 06/04/2020 01:45

@Didkdt If you are in the shielded group you will know that you are asked to sin up at yougov.uk and asked if you give permission for your details to be shared. If you do, then data protection is not an issue.
Also for some conditions it is obvious you are in the shielded group. I have a rare condition and had no idea if I would be until I got a letter. The condition is not mentioned specifically on yougov site about shielded groups. And I know some others with my condition were shocked to discover they are in the shielded group.

Herd immunity was really Cummings strategy, then Italy changed everyone's minds:

(Times paywall) Inside No 10 How Boris Johnson changed his priorities: save lives first, and then salvage the economy

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/coronavirus-ten-days-that-shook-britain-and-changed-the-nation-for-ever-spz6sc9vb

.....Dominic Cummings, the prime minister’s senior aide,
became convinced that Britain would be better able to resist a lethal second wave of the disease next winter
if Whitty’s prediction that 60% to 80% of the population became infected was right and the UK developed “herd immunity”.

At a private engagement at the end of February, Cummings outlined the government’s strategy.

Those present say it was “herd immunity, protect the economy and if that means some pensioners die, too bad”.

At the Sage meeting on March 12, a moment now dubbed the “Domoscene conversion”,

Cummings changed his mind.
In this “penny-drop moment”, he realised he had helped set a course for catastrophe.

Until this point, the rise in British infections had been below the European average.
Now they were above it and on course to emulate Italy, where the picture was bleak.

A minister said: “Seeing what was happening in Italy was the galvanising force across government.”

By Friday, March 13, Cummings had become the most outspoken advocate of a tough crackdown.

“Dominic himself had a conversion,”
a senior Tory said.

“He’s gone from ‘herd immunity and let the old people die’,
to
‘let’s shut down the country and the economy.’”
.......
Johnson had also been queasy about the previous original approach.

“Boris hated the language of ‘herd immunity’ because it implied that it was OK for people to die,”
a senior source said.
.....
The two experts, together with Hancock and Cummings, all delivered to Johnson one message:
“Now is the moment to act.”

The prime minister agreed:
“We must work around the clock and take all necessary measures.”

One of those present said:
“The mood in the room was astonishing.
You could tell that something very significant had shifted.”

Sky News:

The government's chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance has told Sky News that about 60% of people will need to become infected with coronavirus in order for the UK to enjoy "herd immunity".
