It would be a terrible, terrible mistake to ban exercise outside

Domestic violence has already increased, and whilst I know some people have been ignoring the rules the majority are abiding by them. The knock on effects for people’s mental health and the safety of women and children inside the home would be terrible.
It would be such an infringement of people’s liberty and terrible for the mental and physical health of so many people.
Imagine being stuck indoors all day with young children in a flat with no outside space.
This idea worries me more than anything else about the current crisis. I hope so much that it doesn’t happen. I feel like it’s almost like a reaction in anger because not everyone will do what they’re told: like a smack.

@callmeadoctor

FGS Get a grip....... Its been 2 weeks, can't believe the selfishness of people. I have spent 4 months YES FOUR MONTHS in a hospital ward with an ill child, TRY THAT ONE!!!!

Totally different. I bet you are not in a abusive relationship.

Having spent a few days in a hospital with a toddler, you have my sympathy and are quite right, there really is no comparison. Flowers

callmeadoctor · 05/04/2020 15:04

Mental Health, the buzzword of the moment, all of you with "mental health" issues, consider how you would manage 4 months beside a hospital bed on your own, watching a sick child and being threatened not allowed to visit because of all those people who have to exercise for their "mental health". What bollocks and who are you snowflakes?

callmeadoctor · 05/04/2020 15:04

Thank you Justasking xxx And I'm sorry for being so angry..............

justasking111 · 05/04/2020 15:05

You can escape an abusive relationship, you cannot escape the reality of a child in hospital for months.

lmcneil003 · 05/04/2020 15:05

Apology accepted. You're in a tough spot.

callmeadoctor · 05/04/2020 15:06

And clearly DR Ranj doesn't know what he is talking about, because we had to threaten legal action to get in to visit our child. Hospitals are stopping visits to children,

callmeadoctor · 05/04/2020 15:06

Sorry all, rant over xx

justasking111 · 05/04/2020 15:07

This mental health flag waving is getting tiresome I agree. Snowflakes never seemed so apt. Whether our health issues are physical or mental we just have to crack on now.

callmeadoctor · 05/04/2020 15:08

Ironically my child doesn't have coronavirus, yet the hospital is being very difficult and has actually said that our visiting could stop at any time.

Thedogshow · 05/04/2020 15:09

Lots of people have had to spend time in hospital with children. Or been in hospital themselves. It’s awful. Because you’re stuck inside, in a hospital. It’s really rubbish.
But is that relevant to a discussion about whether any outside exercise should be banned? It’s a huge issue for society as a whole and your own individual experience doesn’t change anything in the context of the debate.
The main point is that for many families, in particular many women and children, and particularly those living in poverty or in difficult domestic situations, this could make life unbearable.

@Zaphodsotherhead Why do you have to get fat? Surely you would just eat less food?

BlondieBeachBum · 05/04/2020 15:11

I also wish people would stop going on about "mental health". FGS, think about what previous generations have dealt with (war, famine, the holocaust) and compare that to being safely in your own home for a few weeks or months.

Would you rather feel a bit glum for a few months - or die? That's really what it boils down to. Get a grip!

callmeadoctor · 05/04/2020 15:11

Just adds to the stress and misery. No physio, no speech and language therapy, no putting in wheelchair to get out of the room. No anything apart from meds. No baths or showers, no washing of hair. This is the reality of patients in hospital at the moment. No day room contact (so no communal tv)

Redannie118 · 05/04/2020 15:12

Perhaps if people in London weren't so bloody selfish we wouldn't be facing this. I live in the north of England in one of the most socially deprived areas in the country. High rises and rows and rows of colliery houses- thousands of people with no gardens and the streets and parks are empty. Clearly if you are middle class and live in London you believe you are entitled to do what you like- after all, most of these people can afford private health care or retire to your second home in the country when this all goes to shit.

alloutoffucks · 05/04/2020 15:12

Lots of people struggle with suicide ideation and depression anyway. Sometimes it is just a matter of getting through it.

lmcneil003 · 05/04/2020 15:13

@justasking111

This mental health flag waving is getting tiresome I agree.

I had some a woman in my team at work have time off for post-natal depression. What a snowflake.
I had a man in my team take 6 months off for mental health issues and a suicide attempt. What a snowflake.

alloutoffucks · 05/04/2020 15:13

@Redannie118 I do think there is a certain kind of well off person who thinks the rules do not apply to them.

callmeadoctor · 05/04/2020 15:14

The dog show, it is relevant, because the risk of people spreading it outside means lockdown will last longer, which means my child won't get their hair washed or bathed, no physio which means longer to learn to walk ( which then means longer to get on the toilet, which then means they don't have to wee in the bed) do you follow?

justasking111 · 05/04/2020 15:15

My OH op.time sensitive was cancelled, so tried to go privately, you will be pleased to know government have taken over the spire group and other private hospitals so no joy. physio cancelled so sent him some photocopies of exercises to do. Lots of people who are ill not coronavirus related are suffering just now. We just have to endure this for the time being. I just pray that cancer sufferers are not going to die needlessly during this pandemic.

Lovemusic33 · 05/04/2020 15:16

It upsets me seeing the photos of people acting like total dicks yesterday in London, people sun bathing in public spaces, people meeting in groups, these people should have been arrested, they are not exercising and they are not sticking to the social distancing rules. I’m upset that these people have possibly ruined it for others, people that need a hours exercise a day for mental health reasons, for those who live in flats and can not sit in their gardens to get some sun Sad.

I walk every day, I’m stuck indoors with my 2 DD’s who both have autism, my youngest isn’t coping and today threatened to kill herself, she hasn’t left the house for over 2 weeks and she’s climbing the walls. I know we need to follow the rules but if they tighten them it could effect many people (mentally and physically).

We are in a area where the number of cases is really low, 99% of people are following the rules, we don’t see scenes like were seen in London yesterday, the parks are empty except the odd runner or dog walker, the roads are very quiet and the supermarkets are quiet, generally people here are not going out other than to exercise or shop.

alloutoffucks · 05/04/2020 15:16

@Imcneil I find it is people with actual mental health problems who are getting fed up of the - my mental health - being used basically to justify for some people whatever they want to do. It has replaced - its my human rights.

mrpheasant · 05/04/2020 15:16

Perhaps would be a better idea initially to only allow those without a private garden to remain in within their boundaries and allow those with flats outdoors.
This might help balance how many people are outdoors. There are lots of exercises you can do in a garden. Even a small one.

mrpheasant · 05/04/2020 15:17

With a garden *

DVandVulnerableToCovid · 05/04/2020 15:18

@Boudicabooandbulldogs I don't want exercise stopped but it needs to be better policed with fines for people taking the piss. The real solution is more funding. For police, and separately for DV services. DV victims are, like anyone, at risk from the virus. No point surviving DV only to then die from the virus. Far better to have well-funded services. So lockdown continues but DV victims are given escape routes via online access to services, transport to leave, and somewhere safe to go to. That's a different topic to this thread but it's just when people cite concern over DV as a reason to end or relax lockdown, this is to let th know what really needs to happen. Exposing already vulnerable people to a virus with a high death rate doesn't help.

As a DV victim, can I suggest if it's possible offering online chat for help and counselling to your clients. Sorry if that's not possible, but long before Covid phone contact was difficult for me and I'm sure many other victims. Many abusers have recording equipment in the home. It could also be easier to speak freely online if there's any children around.
