It would be a terrible, terrible mistake to ban exercise outside

Domestic violence has already increased, and whilst I know some people have been ignoring the rules the majority are abiding by them. The knock on effects for people’s mental health and the safety of women and children inside the home would be terrible.
It would be such an infringement of people’s liberty and terrible for the mental and physical health of so many people.
Imagine being stuck indoors all day with young children in a flat with no outside space.
This idea worries me more than anything else about the current crisis. I hope so much that it doesn’t happen. I feel like it’s almost like a reaction in anger because not everyone will do what they’re told: like a smack.

I think for the sake of fairness they should allow some exemptions for people in high rises without balconies. A friend of mine lives alone in a flat (which I used to share with her) where the windows only open a couple of inches and in the summer it is like a greenhouse. We used to go and sit in the little green opposite every evening because it was unbearable. If they massively tighten up this lockdown I will have to consider whether to move her in with me. (And yes I know it's against the rules, she's already asked and I said no.)

ivykaty44 · 05/04/2020 14:37

This is such a wonderful ploy by the spin doctors of government to decoy the blame from them to the people ignoring the rule, suggest a ban on exercise and then...as the death rates increase next week they will get the blame rather than the government

thing is just like the fake Brighton beach photos and the fake cycling photos people will be gullible enough to believe it all.

Yes people need to stay home but by banning exercise all that will happen is those flouting the rules will continue to do so

Bornfreebutincovidchains · 05/04/2020 14:38

Jenny harries said in open risk of catching it is is vastly reduced. Because wind, sun, air moving...

swimlyn · 05/04/2020 14:38

@MonkeyToesOfDoom

Imagine being stuck indoors all day with young children in a flat with no outside space.

Imagine being stuck indoors all day whilst your young child fights for their lives in a hospital 50 mile's away.

This is what people aren't getting. If you go out. You can become exposed. You could become ill, you could pass it to others. You could suffocate to death alone in a hospital bed miles from anyone. Your child could die alone, desperate for air, miles away from you.

That sounds alarmist, but that's what's happening right now all over the world.

Stay home, stay safe but get bored. Insist on going out and risk catching a virus that might kill you and your children.

This sums it up perfectly – well said!

Please, everyone, print the above out and stick it up in your kitchen.

The restrictions are not “forever” so stop being so bloody entitled.

Death IS forever…

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 05/04/2020 14:39

This appears to be a problem with someone uncontrollably coughing and not self-isolating though - not a problem with sunbathing/picnicking

They might think it's just hay fever. And anyway, yes, this is the problem - it isn't the activities that are the problem, it's the fact that it brings you into contact with people and increases your chance of catching the virus.

Nothing wrong with shopping, swimming, going on the tube as activities is there? It's being close to people that's the problem. It isn't difficult to understand

FreakStar · 05/04/2020 14:39

Most of the concerns expressed here are short term concerns! And none of the problems are as significant as the risks from this virus!

Lack of Vitamin D? Take a supplement!

Obesity? It takes longer than a few weeks to become obese!

Domestic violence? Yes, for some there will be a great risk- but it won't affect as many and not as much as the risk from the virus.

And yes- the point made about banning exercise affecting the poor and city dwellers the most is true- but these people are also the most likely to catch and spread the disease!

Mysocalledlifexx · 05/04/2020 14:40

It has to be done people still out at the weekend in parks loads of people around ,if people did what they were told then it wouldnt happen.
People who are not doing what they are told should be ashamed, u all are a joke, u are the ones putting people are risk.
High fines i hope will come in place like £500-£1000 per person thats what needs to happen.

Fithles · 05/04/2020 14:43

But Hear the advice is 2m and cover your sneezes, coughs. Sunbathing and picnicking carries zero additional risk if other rules are not being broken.

Assuming hay fever during a viral pandemic? ! That is selfish and foolish.

definitelygc · 05/04/2020 14:44

Domestic violence? Yes, for some there will be a great risk- but it won't affect as many and not as much as the risk from the virus.

According to crime stats 2.4 million people in England and Wales experienced domestic abuse in the last year so I'm not sure that statement is true.

Kokeshi123 · 05/04/2020 14:47

If people take the piss and sunbathe, then tell them they have a choice of pay a fine or have indelible ink stamped on their hand, barring them from outdoor time until it has worn off.

Job done.

Kokeshi123 · 05/04/2020 14:48

The weather is getting warmer. If you try to ban people from going outside, you'll have a riot on your hands. Easy to organize these days with social media!

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 05/04/2020 14:48

Fithles

You are being ridiculous. Imagine, people being selfish and thoughtless. Whoever would have thought it?

alloutoffucks · 05/04/2020 14:50

I am assuming all those going on about exercise have never had an operation or broken foot/leg that made exercising virtually impossible for a while? I have. I was sedentary, and then when I could be active I built up my fitness again. People deal with stuff like this every day.

alloutoffucks · 05/04/2020 14:51

There are not going to be riots.

Kingcole · 05/04/2020 14:54

Frontline NHS staff are literally risking their lives. Do as your told and stay indoors.

We are hardly close to the 1885 Montreal Smallpox Epidemic. ... Children were separated from their parents and had to die alone if infected. People were shot if they didn't comply.

DVandVulnerableToCovid · 05/04/2020 14:55

@definitelygc Yes, but DV victims are at as much if not greater risk from the virus as we are from abuse.

lmcneil003 · 05/04/2020 14:55

Social distancing is working already.
Vast majoirty in isolation.

LastTrainEast · 05/04/2020 14:55

This appears to be a problem with someone uncontrollably coughing and not self-isolating though - not a problem with sunbathing/picnicking. yes! so if you explain that to the virus , Fithles it will not infect you.

lmcneil003 · 05/04/2020 14:56

Social distancing is working already.
Vast majoirty in isolation.
Th govt wants to appear tough because they have really fucked up elsewhere. This is political for them so they can blame everything on the people who didn't obey, not their ineptitude.
Don't fall for it sheeple.

callmeadoctor · 05/04/2020 14:58

FGS Get a grip....... Its been 2 weeks, can't believe the selfishness of people. I have spent 4 months YES FOUR MONTHS in a hospital ward with an ill child, TRY THAT ONE!!!!

Thedogshow · 05/04/2020 14:58

Notmyrealname. Read what I wrote properly. I didn’t say they should drive to go for walks. I said don’t call people twats. Two entirely different issues.
You can disagree with things in a civilised way.

Boudicabooandbulldogs · 05/04/2020 14:59

@DVandVulnerableToCovid,
I’m aware of the help available to victims of DV. The client of ours that was killed last week had just left her partner the day before. Lots of our DV clients will not access phone counselling due to no safe place in the home. The ones who are accessing it are usually doing it whilst outside. We had over 30 clients in our charity only 6 have taken up the phone counselling. We have seen incidents of DV increase already since this started and I can’t see it getting any better. The police are already stretched. I can’t see how at least in my area they can police a strict no exercise policy and respond to any incident.
There are also the children in unsafe situations. I know some social workers who aren’t going into family homes and are just FaceTiming instead.
There are no good options, however I don’t see how stopping exercise will help much more. Surely finding those who are ignoring the current rules would be more productive.

RosesandIris · 05/04/2020 15:00

MH is really suffering anyway. If there is a total lockdown a lot of people are just going to go into a meltdown. As others have said, physical health is just as important . If people are cooped up all day , no fresh air and exercise, all getting on each other's nerves, it will really affect immunity. Lack of V D and physical ill health will result.

callmeadoctor · 05/04/2020 15:01

Oh and yes, now I am having to fight to be allowed in to the hospital.

Zaphodsotherhead · 05/04/2020 15:02

I'm another distance runner and so is my dog. If exercise is banned, apart from one short walk, I'm going to be shut in a house getting fatter and fatter and no vitamin D or exercise to boost my immune system. I also work in a shop, face to face with hundreds of customers a day. If I have to go to work and can't even run off my frustration at the end of the day, I may well go insane and beat some of the dipshits coming in daily for two cans of coke and an ice cream to death with a bar of Toblerone.
