Exercise could be banned - Matt Hancock

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-52172035

"Matt Hancock told the BBC's Andrew Marr that the government would "take action" if further measures are needed to bring the coronavirus under control.

It comes after reports of groups of people gathering in parks during sunny weather this weekend."

So do we think this will happen - normally this is how it goes, the threat comes, and a week later it's reality. It's a shame that people still flouted the rules this weekend :(

I can't see a thread on this already but please let me know if there is one!!

I feel slightly hysterical about that I live in a flat and my daily walk is so important. I could honestly cry. I'm so angry with everyone who is flouting the rules.

Ferfooksek · 05/04/2020 10:48

I think that’s the next step and he’s saying it to get the public used to the idea so it’s not a surprise when it happens.

Bearbehind · 05/04/2020 10:49

As with so many things, it looks like the minority are going to ruin it for everyone

These threads are filled with ‘can I go out more than once’ or ‘can I go out for several hours’

It’s not difficult to work out that if lots of people are going out more than once or for several hours at a time then the numbers of people seen around will increase

Stay at fucking home - you’re not anymore special than the next person

Go out once a day for about an hour or we’ll all be banned from exercise completely

Random18 · 05/04/2020 10:49

I think it will happen.

I am on a thread where many are saying it's ok to go out with kids once and then a run later in same day .

How is that different from sunbathing. It's just everyone thinking they are special and guidelines don't apply.

I am really concerned that does happen.

We have been following guidelines and that once a day has been so important to the kids.

But what else can he do?

Thetigeronthewobbelboard · 05/04/2020 10:49

Yes, I expect it won’t take a week though. Last time things were stepped up a level on the Monday, just after the rule breaking of the previous sunny weekend.

Given the forecast this week and Easter weekend coming up, I anticipate increased measures from tomorrow or Tuesday.

LittleLittleLittle · 05/04/2020 10:49

I was expecting that.

What will happen is people will then go food shopping daily. The more intelligent ones will pick up bread, milk or another staple with the other stuff they are getting. The stupid ones won't e.g. buy one packet of crisps and will get fined.

ShowOfHands · 05/04/2020 10:50

I go for a long run most days. If total wankers who can't do as they told mean I can't get out, I'll be pretty cross. I'd do it, up my home based HIIT and weights but, yes, I'd be v cross.

milkcartoncat · 05/04/2020 10:51

I’m going to get so fat. I put weight on so easily. I’m trying not to eat anything much - less than 600 calories a day and we’ve been going for one 2 mile walk a day. If that goes, that’s it.
My children are putting weight on too. Usually so active and now they want to eat all the time.

nellodee · 05/04/2020 10:52

I think it depends on whether the government want to suppress this virus, or whether they actually still want to take the herd immunity path to some extent, but don't want to look culpable for the results. There may be some advantage to them saying, "We told you there would be lots of infections if you went out, and you all did it anyway," if it gets more people infected more quickly.

Circletime27 · 05/04/2020 10:52

I’m dreading this. We’ve got a 7 month old puppy and the hour walking with him is the only thing keeping him calm in the house and me sane! We’re all going to be climbing the walls without it. I can exercise in the living room by putting a dvd on but our garden just isn’t big enough for pup to burn off his energy.

wonderstuff · 05/04/2020 10:52

How depressing. I find a walk so good for sanity. People will still have to walk dogs.

CandlesBlanketsandTea · 05/04/2020 10:52

@Random18 I'm on the same thread and people are genuinely arguing with me about the rules about one from of exercise per day. I feel so fuckin angry right now with people who don't think the rules apply to them.

Bearbehind · 05/04/2020 10:53

I saw that thread and it just shows what the problem is here

As soon as people start going out more frequently and places start looking busier, things like sunbathing ‘feel’ more acceptable

It’s not rocket science to work out that if people go out twice a day not once or for 3 hours a day not 1, then at any one point there’s more people around 🤔

Random18 · 05/04/2020 10:54

Candles I'd much rather be a sanctimonious twit as I got called than play my part in spreading CV and also instigating a tighter lockdown with devastating MH consequences

daisypond · 05/04/2020 10:54

I would expect that to happen.

TheArchSorcererofContwaraburg · 05/04/2020 10:55

Not surprising. Many are going out multiple times a day in the name of exercise.

LittleRen · 05/04/2020 10:55

It is very depressing. I am generally ok with lockdown as I see the end point, but I really do enjoy my 30 minute walk with my boys into the woods in the evening, we see nobody else.

Such a shame if it gets taken away, but I guess ultimately it means we will get closer to the end point quicker if less people are out.

It will be very very difficult for people in cities, apartments etc if it does happen.

OP posts:
Bearbehind · 05/04/2020 10:55

People will still have to walk dogs.

Based on what’s happened in other countries that is likely to be limited to just going for a poo and wee within a few metres of your home - ie, it’s for toilet purposes, not exercise

Eireni · 05/04/2020 10:56

Shit. If I can’t get to the allotment over the next few months then that’s an entire year written off of growing my own food Angry it’s peak sowing/planting season. We are also in a flat, allotment is my only outdoor space but it’s a few minutes walk down the road.

milkcartoncat · 05/04/2020 10:56

God people in tower blocks. It’s bad. It’s basically like being in jail.
I know it’s for staying safe - but realistically what sort of life is it? How long is it for? 6 months? A year? Longer? How long will people tolerate it before giving up all hope?

Random18 · 05/04/2020 10:57

No offence but why should a dog get walked but children won't get to burn of some energy outside?

And get some much needed vitamin D.

slipperywhensparticus · 05/04/2020 10:57

It's horrible and depressing but I wouldnt be surprised the way people act I'm not even coastal yet people are suddenly walking their (overweight) dogs that I've never seen before (I've been unemployed since August) outside my house is more busy in the week with cars more busy on the weekends with dog walkers

LittleRen · 05/04/2020 10:57

Which other countries have gone so far as to ban exercise - Italy, Spain.. has France?

OP posts:
milkcartoncat · 05/04/2020 10:57

The thing is - there is no end point. There is no exit strategy. It is open ended. Obviously if everyone stays in cases will fall. And then they all climb again when it’s relaxed.
That’s my major issue with this, no exit strategy. It’s just buying time - but we need a lot of time.

CandlesBlanketsandTea · 05/04/2020 10:57

@Random18 me too, I just can't understand what people don't understand about staying in. I'm sitting here crying at the thought of being trapped inside for weeks, all because other people think they are so damn special. People on that thread are actively encouraging the OP to flout the rules. I can't work out if it's stupidity or arrogance.
