www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-52172035

"Matt Hancock told the BBC's Andrew Marr that the government would "take action" if further measures are needed to bring the coronavirus under control.

It comes after reports of groups of people gathering in parks during sunny weather this weekend."

So do we think this will happen - normally this is how it goes, the threat comes, and a week later it's reality. It's a shame that people still flouted the rules this weekend :(

I can't see a thread on this already but please let me know if there is one!!

What's the point in testing? Surely you are only cleaning fur that moment you take the test. After that you still catch it at any given time surely

screwcovid19 · 05/04/2020 11:38

Yep, because some people think the rules don't apply to them because they need more exercise, walking with children isn't enough. They can't possibly do an exercise video at home. They need to go for a run too.

MumofTinies · 05/04/2020 11:39

@mumoftiniesyou know it wouldnt be endless amount of fines you'd be arrested eventually

I think I have seen one police car out in the 7 years I have lived in my area, I'll take my chances.

Rabblemum · 05/04/2020 11:39

I’m dreading it, I need exercise to sleep and think straight, this will horrible for my mental health. No knowing when this will end is utter hell.

rwalker · 05/04/2020 11:41

I think with new hospital bed coming on line think we will continue as we are.
Everyone shouting lockdown lockdown I just don't get it theres no vaccine ( at least 12/18months )no cure .
Lockdown is like hiding under the bed from a burglar you have to mange the rate of infection with restrictions people exposed to it at slow level.
Lock down leave no one exposed EVERYONE vulnerable to it it's not going away .
You can't lockdown forever you are in exactly the same position as the beginning of the outbreak.
At the moment massive but manageable rate of infections .

isthismylifenow · 05/04/2020 11:42

We are on day 10 of complete lockdown which includes not leaving the house to run, walk the dog etc.

Yes its frustrating, but our numbers are not climbing like other countries.

ilovecakeandwine · 05/04/2020 11:42

My issue with this is and me Hancock said and I quote the vast majority were sticking to the guidelines, adding: "Let's not have a minority spoil it for everybody."
So are they giving fines to these people not sticking to the rules ?
If they ban exercise are they going to be more people out giving fines ?
If they are not stopping people now how will they stop people if they ban exercise?
I have followed the rules , if I go for a run that's it the next day I may take dc out .
I'm sorry but if they ban exercise completely I may ignore if I have to stay in for weeks I'll go mad if I can't even walk round the block .
If they are not stopping people now what is a complete ban going to do ?

Whathappenedtothelego · 05/04/2020 11:42

Perhaps they could do something a bit like when they restrict cars according to odd and even number plates.
Everyone gets a 1 hour slot to go out for food or exercise based on first letter of their surname.
Take ID with you and you are fined if you are outside your slot. No ID - automatic fine.
Key workers or those providing care for the vulnerable are exempt.
Easy to police, clear to understand. Spreads out the number of people out at any one time.
People less likely to be able to congregate with friends, unless surnames happen to start with same letter.

LilacTree1 · 05/04/2020 11:42

Im in a flat and I was expecting this regardless of the weekend

But I’m increasingly furious that nothing was done about people flying in etc and somehow those of who don’t swan about the world are having to pay the price.

They should have quarantined everyone coming in from Italy ages ago.

Labour might have been worse but how can I support this government?

I will also break the law if this happens.

Pleasedontdothat · 05/04/2020 11:42

Before banning all outdoor exercise, how about enforcing the current regulations more stringently? Apparently there were plenty of police out in Brockwell Park yesterday but not actually dispersing any groups ... try that before punishing the majority for the behaviour of a minority.

Plus if I see one more photo supposedly illustrating people not adhering to the rules, but actually showing people walking/running/cycling in complete adherence - ie more than 2m apart, only in small family groups or on their own I will go even more stir crazy than I already am ... a wide-angle lens from a low perspective gives the impression of people crowded together when they’re not

BirdandSparrow · 05/04/2020 11:42

I'm in Spain, we're going into week 4 now, exercise has never been permitted. You get used to it.
It won't kill you. And I say that as someone who used to walk as much as possible in the countryside to help me relax.
It's not great, but 47 million of us are getting on with it. I'm sure you will too if it comes to it.

LilacTree1 · 05/04/2020 11:43

And why couldn’t they fine people who they consider broke the rules yesterday?

Bearbehind · 05/04/2020 11:44

What is this flouting that’s going on? Going to a park is not flouting any rules. If they want a tighter lock down they’ll go for it but can we drop the naughty school child narrative that some bad people spoiled it for the rest?

Have you listened to what Matt Hancock has said this morning? 🤔

It is exactly because some people are acting like naughty school children that further restrictions are being considered

And those people will very much be spoiling it for the rest

vanillandhoney · 05/04/2020 11:44

If they are not stopping people now how will they stop people if they ban exercise?

Yeah, this is my problem too. Making things even stricter is only going to be effective if they actually do something to enforce it!

isthismylifenow · 05/04/2020 11:44

Waterlego, but getting vitamin D from the sun is a good thing.

Wafflehouse · 05/04/2020 11:45

I too think this is just preparing people for when it happens, not if. It’s such a shame people can’t just do as we’ve all been asked. I can’t believe the numbers of people sunning themselves that are being reported, wtf is wrong them all?!

Ds and I had taken up running together, 3 times a week, very early morning to avoid people and the change in him has been unreal. It’s really lifted his mood, gotten rid of some anger he had and he’s sleeping much better. The only other time I go out is for work, him not at all. I’ll be disappointed for me but also for him when we get cooped up properly, it’s been great one to one time.

SarahTancredi · 05/04/2020 11:45

But bird 4 weeks..

And whats the plan for going back to normal life.

Everyone is doing their best to cope with it however normal.life even without socialisation incomes crowds

So are we all gonna.sit blindly waiting for a breakthrough that never comes?

What is they actual idea long term

hiredandsqueak · 05/04/2020 11:45

Around here people seem to be sticking to the rules, I've seen no more people about than I usually do and only the usual people walking dogs and the odd cyclist. Today I walked through two parks/playing fields and only saw one other person in the distance walking a dog and of course the play equipment has notices on saying it's closed so not seen any children on there since the lockdown began. If getting out once a day is banned I will obiously comply but fear I and the dog will go stir crazy.

Genevieva · 05/04/2020 11:45

There is a mid-point between preventing exercise and controlling it more. In France you need to print a permission slip to leave the house and can only exercise close to home.

In theory, if our country was completely closed to the outside world, a total shutdown would eliminate the disease entirely within a month or two because even if someone in your household gives it to you now and you don't show symptoms from 2 weeks, you should be recovered within 3 weeks of that. Similarly, everyone in hospital now should be out one way or another within a month. In practice, the virus is now endemic internationally, so even if we rid ourselves of it at home, it will come back and spread rapidly. We can't control responses to it in other countries and our economy requires some international travel. Social distancing is a privilege that is only possible in developed societies with plumbing and good supply chains. It is wreaking havoc in India. It is impossible to implement in Syria. This makes it harder to find a light at the end of the tunnel. The opportunity for eradication was before the virus left China and it was missed.

Take a look at the thread "How do I explain the rules to DH??(44 Posts)".

No wonder kids are meeting to play basketball etc when their parents struggle with the basics?

Dongdingdong · 05/04/2020 11:46

That south London park that’s been closed - I’ve seen photos of people sitting in the park, but some distance away from other people. Seriously, where is the risk in this?

www.cityam.com/coronavirus-brockwell-park-shut-on-sunday/

Ironically the only person within two metres of them is the policeman!

HippoPudgy · 05/04/2020 11:46

@LittleRen
Which other countries have gone so far as to ban exercise - Italy, Spain.. has France?

The UAE has banned exercise. Even dog walkers are being told to go home.

echt · 05/04/2020 11:46

This from a government that espoused herd immunity.

Now they piss and moan about the herd getting out and about.

Hmm
Splodgetastic · 05/04/2020 11:47

@Whathappenedtothelego, I said this to DH yesterday - we should be allocated a time of day according to first letter of surname staggered at half-hour intervals, but I guess then the burglars would all know when all of the Smiths or Joneses were out!

Dongdingdong · 05/04/2020 11:48

Well, he looks to be just over two metres from them actually, but you get my point.
