"Matt Hancock told the BBC's Andrew Marr that the government would "take action" if further measures are needed to bring the coronavirus under control.

It comes after reports of groups of people gathering in parks during sunny weather this weekend."

So do we think this will happen - normally this is how it goes, the threat comes, and a week later it's reality. It's a shame that people still flouted the rules this weekend :(

I can't see a thread on this already but please let me know if there is one!!

I’m in Dubai and going out at all, even to let your dog wee, is not allowed. Only to food shops, medical appointments or pharmacy, and only one person per household. That rule came in yesterday for a fortnight because people were taking the piss with exercising outside.

Musicalmistress · 05/04/2020 10:58

I think people would really struggle with mental health if there was no allowance for 'exercise' outdoors.

Goawayquickly · 05/04/2020 10:58

milkcartoncat if you eat less than 600 calories a day you are going to get really ill, really quickly. You have an ED?

Lunafortheloveogod · 05/04/2020 10:58

I’ll be pacing the garden with the buggy like a woman possessed.

At the moment it’s about the only plan for sanity I have, a walk through the middle of no where (the path into the woods is 2 houses down) to let ds1 nap while colicky ds2 is calmed by the jiggling while dp’s at work so I really don’t have a way of soothing two upset infants at the same time(1 and 3weeks) besides the buggy.

If anything it’ll increase the number of “essential” shop runs since it’ll be the only way to break the cabin fever. Until they then limit that too.

ilovebrie8 · 05/04/2020 11:00

I really hope not as some fresh air and exercise is vital if you live in a very small flat...the mental health fallout from this would be catastrophic ...cooped up 24/7 isn’t viable Shock . People just need to be sensible always a few that spoilt for the majority...hope this doesn’t happen it’s unthinkable

Flipreverseit · 05/04/2020 11:01

I don’t think I could do it.

wowfudge · 05/04/2020 11:01

I've found a daily walk makes a huge beneficial difference to my frame of mind. I'm doing online gym classes too, but it's being outdoors which is best for me. That said, if I go out early evening or at the weekend, I do encounter people who are not social distancing: I move, but all too frequently the cyclist/runner/dog walker/teenager with headphones doesn't also move meaning we're not 2m apart. Cyclists and runners are absolutely the worst. They move for no one. I'm walking on public footpaths and a canal towpath.

daisypond · 05/04/2020 11:01

People will still have to walk dogs.
No, abroad it is only for toilet purposes within a few metres of your house.

Bearbehind · 05/04/2020 11:01

I don’t doubt it, which is why the selfish fuckers who are taking the piss need to stop before it ruins it for everyone 😤

Puppywithattitude · 05/04/2020 11:01

My dog is already feeling the effects of an altered exercise regime, as a high energy breed he usually has nearly 2 hours a day mainly off lead. If he's only allowed out for toileting he will go mental.

WoollySheep462 · 05/04/2020 11:02

He has not said this. Matt Hancock is concerned about mental health and exercise. He has banned sunbathing, and quite rightly.

FaFoutis · 05/04/2020 11:02

Dogs don't have toilets. What would you do with a dog in a flat? What are they doing with dogs in Dubai?

Samtsirch · 05/04/2020 11:03

@milkcartoncat
I really feel for you.
I am 50 and gain weight so easily, used to spend a lot of my day walking, and trying to eat healthily.
I have already put on half a stone from stress/ boredom eating.
I am hoping to try to get a handle on it before it escalates.
Best wishes to you.X

SnoozyLou · 05/04/2020 11:03

I feel so sorry for anyone who doesn't have a garden. Ours is tiny but to have no outdoor space at all would be horrible. We haven't been leaving the house. I didn't go for walks before so don't see the need to start now.

I think it would be better to try fining people who are sunbathing, picnicking and gathering en masse. £300 a pop would be a good start.

CeibaTree · 05/04/2020 11:03

But at what point do we say this isn't worth it? Far more people's mental and physical health will suffer (vs those who catch a fatal dose of C-19) if they are cooped up in a small garden-less flat all day for what could be an indefinite time.

Stellamboscha · 05/04/2020 11:04

On another thread a person who is 'shielding' is still going out. With no concern that the precise reason they are told not to is diss not to put a burden on the NHS. So hardly surprising that others, who would be unlikely to burden the NHS feel they should be able to as well.
It is shocking that people have been so easily emotionally blackmailed into giving up basic freedoms.
They will be fining a lot of people!

BrooHaHa · 05/04/2020 11:04

Problem is, that if they ban exercise too, the ones who have been following the existing rules will suffer and the ones who have been flouting them will continue to flout them. Until harsh punitive measures come in, such people will continue to do as they feel.

Frenchfemme · 05/04/2020 11:04

I am in France. We are allowed to exercise (on foot, cycling forbidden) for up to 1hr daily, within a 1km radius of our homes only. This has been the case since the restrictions first came in.

daisypond · 05/04/2020 11:04

He has not said this.
He did.
“If you don't want us to have to take the step to ban exercise of all forms outside of your own home, then you've got to follow the rules."

Saysaysay2 · 05/04/2020 11:04

I’ve signed up to be a volunteer so will get my exercise in that way.

PuzzledObserver · 05/04/2020 11:05

If further restrictions are introduced, that doesn't necessarily mean removing the permission to exercise totally. They could, for example, say you can't go more than 1 mile from home.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 05/04/2020 11:05

milkcartoncat if you eat less than 600 calories a day you are going to get really ill, really quickly. You have an ED?

I'm glad you said that, Goawayquickly, because I was thinking the same thing, and I'd be worried about transmitting that attitude to growing children.

Phifedean123 · 05/04/2020 11:05

I honestly am not sure how I'll cope. I live in a second floor flat with a very active two year old, no garden. We go for one walk a day on the beach or park (thankfully just across the road) and it's a life saver for us. Allows two year old fresh air and exercise and is really good for my mental health after battling anxiety/PND.
Groups of people who have been out this weekend have been so unbelievably selfish

Chosennone · 05/04/2020 11:06

I wish they would just firm up what we have got. A permission slip or text message or something so we could be fined of we went out more than once. Surely they could enforce this more strictly rather than take away our one opportunity for freedom/exercise Sad its keeping us sane.

NewName2020 · 05/04/2020 11:07

@milkcartoncat you're eating less than 600 calories a day?!
