That is so shocking and awful.
remembering how impressed and worried we were about china building new hospitals almost overnight, and the lockdown
and now it is here.

This has led to xenophobia around the world and a slippery slope
@Thesispieces

Actually, what this virus has led to around the world is a global cessation of economic activity. It has caused most of the planet's population to be put on some form of house arrest. The scenes from India are horrendous. There is an exodus from the cities as migrant workers attempt to return to their villages. The repercussions of this will dominate the globe for decades. People will die. Businesses will go bankrupt. Neither you, nor anyone else, has any right to silence discussion of how and why this virus started and spread by making baseless accusations. And I do not appreciate your attempts to do so.

Muminabun · 05/04/2020 19:36

There is some compelling evidence gathered by US intelligence to suggest that China has had at-least between 42-48,000 deaths due to cv and they have deliberately kept this quiet. Also If you look at numbers in other countries China’s figures don’t add up.

mochajoes · 05/04/2020 19:43

I feel from reading previous posts a weird sense of jealousy (because they’ve contained it) or is it contempt towards China. This has led to xenophobia around the world and a slippery slope

Acknowledging that the virus came from China & that information has very likely been suppressed is not xenophobic.

Do you think the countries that closed their borders against the WHOs advice were racist?

Porseb · 05/04/2020 19:43

Is it my imagination or are there several threads more recently about China being to blame, lying about its data and how this isn't translating into xenophobia.

As a person of Chinese ethnicity, I have experienced first hand of this, my children have had school friends (apparently teasingly) say they to blame for this.

This is a good long read from an author who crunches the data. If China was lying about its data, the data sets wouldn't replicate around the world as it has done.

He has since written 2 more articles, the latest one about the US looks scarily accurate.

@Hearhoovesthinkzebras
I don’t have personal experience or knowledge of people being sealed in their homes. I am not supporting that. It was not one of the measures implemented in my compound.
I know that doors were taped shut to ensure people did not break self isolation measures,(pink tape across door) but they would have been able to open the door.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 05/04/2020 19:47

Well, that is what I'm talking about - doors being taped shut. That's extreme measures by UK standards and not one that we would accept.

BovaryX · 05/04/2020 19:52

acknowledging that the virus came from China & that information has very likely been suppressed is not xenophobic

Furthermore, trying to silence discussion of how and why this global pandemic spread by making baseless accusations of xenophobia is manipulative and tactical

mochajoes · 05/04/2020 19:52

I reckon the Philippines will have an effective lockdown, their policy is shooting those that disobey.

MarshaBradyo · 05/04/2020 19:53

Mocha yikes

BovaryX · 05/04/2020 19:54

mocha
Yes. There are draconian measures in place in many countries.

mochajoes · 05/04/2020 19:54

I agree @BovaryX

Porseb · 05/04/2020 19:56

So @bovaryx - you're discounting my experiences and that of many like me in the U.K. and across the US?

I'm not trying to silence discussion but I see statements like

"Those wet markets are disgusting. They should ban them" and it's like a cultural attack on all of Asia.

Most countries in Asia have wet markets, it's how people buy their food.

And wildlife markets, I've seen them in Borneo where it's culturally normal

Banning wet markets in Asia would be like banning shoes indoors in the U.K. for all the dirt and bacteria brought in via the soles of shoes - it's disgusting but you can see there would be an outcry

ShanghaiDiva · 05/04/2020 19:57

@Hearhoovesthinkzebras
Yes, it’s tough.
My dh is currently in a quarantine facility on day 9.

BovaryX · 05/04/2020 19:58

@Porseb

Do you have any comments about this Telegraph article on the concerted propaganda campaign being conducted by China on social media across the globe?
www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/2020/04/05/china-floods-facebook-instagram-undeclared-coronavirus-propaganda/

Porseb · 05/04/2020 20:00

Yes @bovaryx - I looked up Xinhua Daily News on Facebook - then I looked at Facebook's Ad library to see what ads they were running.

They're promoting articles which are already on their Facebook page, I don't see anything particularly hidden or underhand about it.

It's public, not hidden - you. An check for yourself too

ShanghaiDiva · 05/04/2020 20:01

Bovary
You seem obsessed with this article.

BovaryX · 05/04/2020 20:04

@ShanghaiDiva
Because I have linked to it? You don't like me citing it? I think it's useful to know the level of social media manipulation which is happening. Always useful when considering different perspectives.

ShanghaiDiva · 05/04/2020 20:05

Not because you have linked to it, but because you keep asking posters to comment on it...

Porseb · 05/04/2020 20:07

I checked Global Times Facebook ads and they're promoting videos and stories of a cute fluffy dog 🙄

BovaryX · 05/04/2020 20:08

@ShanghaiDiva

Nope. I asked two posters to comment on. Interesting responses in both cases....

mochajoes · 05/04/2020 20:10

China's current ban on eating & trading wildlife looks like it may become law, I hope so.

ShanghaiDiva · 05/04/2020 20:12

Is the ellipsis supposed to mean something?
Have you uncovered a giant conspiracy?

BovaryX · 05/04/2020 20:16

@ShanghaiDiva
You feel some compulsion to challenge the Telegraph article? How peculiar. I am not interested in engaging with you. Sorry.

NewNameGuy · 05/04/2020 20:16

Haven't rtft but if you believe China about anything you're a moron
