I can't believe the people who wrote that paper have ever been in a school or met a young child- even if you have the space, children and teens just won't be able to follow the rules consistently. All school buildings have choke points as well that get congested throughout the day.

I actually think the research on schools doesn't matter that much either way though- schools can't open if there aren't the teachers to staff them, and whilst the 12 week shielding and 14 days self-isolation if your household has symptoms rules are in place, I don't think many schools will reliably be able to get enough staff in to do full openings.

bobboreg · 07/04/2020 20:02

Honestly it was farcical.

I really hope the government don't take it seriously as a result.

That's the worry, isn't it? I didn't like how prominent it was on the news today - I felt like it was being given too much credence.

@WhyNotMe40 That sounds exactly like my school. They were jumping on each other and "corona coughing" in one another's faces throughout that last week. It was horrible.

Sorry, bold fail

*Honestly it was farcical.

We have a small number of very sensible keyworkers’ children in. They know why they are there, they know what we all have to do to keep safe but they constantly forget the 2m rule, some can’t follow it at all, siblings just aren’t used to it, the little ones are just so huggy anyway, hand washing is still so hit and miss and needs an adult monitoring every single time .......I’d resign rather than be forced into a full class too soon, honestly.

WhyNotMe40 · 07/04/2020 20:10

I have actually already written my resignation letter. I was going to quit soon anyway and retrain, so it's just a bit earlier...

SansaSnark · 07/04/2020 20:10

Even for secondary age kids it is hard- it's quite unnatural really, and they just forget!

To be honest, I'd like to put some of these scientists in a school environment (just them no kids) and see if even they could manage to stay 2m apart at all times given the layout/corridors etc.

Maighdeann · 07/04/2020 20:16

Flights are still coming into Heathrow with hundreds on board who are being told to quarantine ONLY if they have symptoms. This is so different to other countries - who tag you and monitor your movements to protect both the passenger and the local population.

LilacTree1 · 07/04/2020 20:22

On other threads I’ve seen that only freight is coming in, but that’s not what I can see on airport arrivals.

Maighdeann · 07/04/2020 20:29

I know for a fact it's not only freight

Maighdeann · 07/04/2020 20:29

Repatriations are happening

LilacTree1 · 07/04/2020 20:43

All those incoming flights can’t all be essential medics and repatriation though?

WhoWants2Know · 07/04/2020 20:51

I'm losing track of time since the lockdown started. Are we in the third week now? So potentially expecting to peak soon?

WhyNotMe40 · 07/04/2020 20:57

Yes third week so likely to see peak of cases soon with peak of deaths about a week to 12 days after that.

justchecking1 · 07/04/2020 21:02

So if the schools went back soon would they reintroduce the exams? Seems silly not to sit them if they've only missed 2-3 weeks of school. They could just put them back a few weeks

WhyNotMe40 · 07/04/2020 21:22

No it's too late for that. Other arrangements have been made. Also the earliest schools would return would be after half term.

"Lots of people talking about this Lancet study on impact of school closures and COVID today" t.co/bHRnHTqnMn?amp=1

"It's a good review of what we know. However, it is getting a bit mangled by some in the press..." (thread)

This is also interesting about the schools study- seems like it is based on rubbish/irrelevant studies anyway!

Horehound · 07/04/2020 22:22

Has anyone got the UK Vs Italy deaths spreadsheet?

IronNeonClasp · 07/04/2020 22:38

@Horehound about 20 posts before

Horehound · 07/04/2020 22:48

Oh! Blush

IronNeonClasp · 07/04/2020 22:51

Have you seen the BCG thread?

Random18 · 07/04/2020 22:59

Iron I am dubious!

There is loads of things that seem to put you higher risk or not.

So far I really don't think they have a scoobie what makes some get it mild and others not so mild.

Yamayo · 07/04/2020 23:01

Trump casually threatening the WHO during his rambling press conference.
Announced they were all wrong about the pandemic (they were China-centric apparently) and he was going to withdraw money from them.

Random18 · 07/04/2020 23:12

Yamayo it sounds as if Trump has talked sense for the 1st time ever........

I've not heard what he said but the WHO has some serious questions to answer.

Our govt too..........
