The outcomes from the Remdesivir studies are not clear yet but could possibly show mixed results.

There is some argument that taken early in the illness, it is beneficial. But not on day 10 when things have progressed beyond a certain point, that’s too late. It’s not black and white.

Gilead are ramping up production and at the moment have donated over a million doses, which if I remember right is enough to treat 140,000 people.

SansaSnark · 07/04/2020 17:46

I really do think the time has come to make all non-essential workers stay home.

But I don't think Raab will make a decision like that. Just based solely on they things he was saying today, I don't think he is going to be prepared to make any major changes to the current policy.

Kingcole · 07/04/2020 17:47

No masks for care workers where I work. I have ordered some off Amazon. There is no real encouragement to wear them in fact quite the opposite really. When I returned to work after 2 week isolation they said everything is as normal. Hmm

I used my DH's dusk mask whilst out in the Community today

DarnedSocks · 07/04/2020 18:01

Yes I read early treatment was key. Looks like lack of stock is a big issue. How quickly can drugs be made? Will it be quicker than a vaccine?

I don't know much about Raab but if he's as right-wing as some say, could a reluctance to do more be influenced by who is being most affected? It's the cities suffering the most. BAME communities are being disproportionately affected and that's because they're more likely to live in cities. It will also be worse for all poorer people, whatever their background. They're more likely to have comorbidities. Poverty, overcrowded housing, poor air quality, these all increase your risk of ill health. I'm hope I'm wrong and the government does do what it can to protect everybody.

Random18 · 07/04/2020 18:06

How much Remedisivir has Gilead previously manufactured?

Has it ever been manufactured large scale?

What is the supply chain like to get the components to manufacture the drug.

I don't know the answers but since it wasn't particularly successful as an Ebola drugs that would be my concern.

woodencoffeetable · 07/04/2020 18:10

How quickly can drugs be made?
depends how easy they are to make and how easy it is to get the ingredients
simple medicines are a lot like making sweets or baking a cake. mix-stir-package

Will it be quicker than a vaccine?
almost definitely
vaccines are quite complex, you can't just mix and bake, like a cake. they are more like a sour dough where you need a starter culture that takes a while.

SansaSnark · 07/04/2020 18:15

@DarnedSocks Raab has previously said some pretty awful things, including the idea that people shouldn't have rights and giving proper benefits to disabled people is a "childish wishlist". I do think unfortunately he has the potential to put the economy above lives.

Am I right in thinking that some of the earlier posts about scaremongering haven't aged well?

buttermilkwaffles · 07/04/2020 18:45

The distribution of all confirmed deaths from the pandemic up to today:
– Europe 70.2%
– North America 16.8%
– Asia (excluding China) 7.5%
– China 4.5%
– Oceania 0.06%
– South America 1.4%
– Africa 0.6%.

I was looking back and as recently as only a month ago there were posts saying it's not going to be that bad here! Even last week I was told I was being dramatic because I commented that Boris was struggling with his breathing whilst talking on his video updates!

bobboreg · 07/04/2020 19:00

I know this has been talked about earlier today on this thread, but I'm really concerned about that article today about the limited impact of closing schools. I'm really worried about going back to overcrowded rooms and corridors anytime soon, and sending my own children back into them too.

Are some experts now thinking that children and young people not only don't get it as severely, but also don't transmit it to others? I read the article, but wasn't clear on exactly why the researchers felt the impact was so small?

Not what the Microbiologist on sky has said. He said its really surprised him how young people are getting ill.

It's one study without much data and if you read what Neil Ferguson said at the bottom school closing is very important in social distancing. Also the study was on China, Singapore not the liberal West. Our schools are much different.

AbsentmindedWoman · 07/04/2020 19:20

Gilead aim to make enough to treat over 300,000 people by September and a million by December.

However, when Gilead sent the drug to China for the trials, China patented it - so I think China will be producing an identical drug soon too.

In future a lawsuit between Gilead and the Chinese government will sort out how the profit gets divided but that’s an argument for a later date.

AbsentmindedWoman · 07/04/2020 19:24

@woodencoffeetable love the likening to vaccines as a sourdough! Smile

Linlinds · 07/04/2020 19:29

Does anyone get the sinking feeling that there's no good way out of this. When the restrictions lift and we start going out we are at risk. After seeing young healthy people dying, specialists are saying one reason could be their genetics and the virus can attach to their cells easier, this doesn't make me want to take a gamble in a month or two.

My parents have high blood pressure. My dad's got damage on his lungs from asbestos. They are still popping to get shopping as the slots are not available.

I'm just so worried as the stats show nothing but misery. 135 recovered. Thousands dead. No mild cases tested so we have no real idea how mild it is for people. We've got people suffering at home with burning lungs. I just can't see a positive anywhere.

RedToothBrush · 07/04/2020 19:38

These experts said that if the schools reopened they would still need to practice social distancing as part of wider measures to control the spread of the virus.

After reading a quote from one of the experts stating children would have to remain 2 metres apart from each other at all times, I howled with laughter and thought it was the best joke of the morning.

To put it bluntly, if the researchers think you can get children to social distance at school clearly has no children, has never been in a state school and the research isnt worth the paper it's written on in practical terms.

Can you imagine?

Honestly it was farcical.

I really hope the government don't take it seriously as a result.

AbsentmindedWoman · 07/04/2020 19:39

@linlinds I feel this way kind of.

Even if all curves are flattened and there is an abundance of vents, ppe and rested staff because the numbers are very manageable for the hospitals - if you wind up very sick it’s still not a guarantee that you will recover.

This is especially true for high risk people of which I am one.

LilacTree1 · 07/04/2020 19:42

Red “ After reading a quote from one of the experts stating children would have to remain 2 metres apart from each other at all times, I howled with laughter and thought it was the best joke of the morning.”

They can’t mean it though. They must know what a rush hour Tube or London shop is like at the mo.

Charlottejbt · 07/04/2020 19:44

Good first-hand article about suffering from "mild" Covid 19. One to share with young people who aren't taking it seriously.

Coronavirus: Scientists question school closures impact

For example, even if schools were allowed back, the social distancing measures that we are all being asked to heed, which experts say are very effective, would probably have to remain.

So children going back to school would probably still have to follow the stay-at-home advice outside of school, and also the 2m close-contact rule while in school.

There's also the staff to consider - some may be in high risk groups who should not work away from home.

Prof Viner says schools could have a phased comeback - banning or limiting playtimes and scheduling some part-time classes for pupils to reduce mixing, for example.

"There's a whole range of things that schools could do to reopen in a way that involves social distancing at schools but keeps schools open."

DS's school isn't big enough for the children to work 2metres apart nor to even walk down the corridor.

So I'm not exactly sure what planet these dickhead live on, but it's certainly not mine!

Furfock I like going back to the teens of the worried about threads, we were really frightening people back then with our outrageous ridiculous predictions that would never happen in a million years, it’s just the flu! 🙄😐

SummerSazz · 07/04/2020 19:51

@RedToothBrush thanks for all your informative posts - I've been reading from thread one and have been suitably prepped provisions wise since.

My children go to school on a public bus. It's crowded and filthy and is all ages from the local community. I just can't see it working.

MarshaBradyo · 07/04/2020 19:52

Re old threads: For some reason no. 17 sticks in my mind as the one where people said are you all still going?!

WhyNotMe40 · 07/04/2020 19:54

Prof viner lives in cloud cuckoo land. The secondary I work in would be nothing like the calm order he envisages - the week before we closed kids were coughing on each other and calling out "virused" thinking it was hilarious. I myself was coughed on twice "accidentally". It's all I can do to make them line up quietly outside the classroom sometimes and then there's all sorts of pushy shovey going on.

And then theirs my youngest's preschool. I can't get him to stop licking stuff at home. What chance have the there! My middle child is in yr1 and a huggy thumb sucker. Constantly hanging off her friends and always comes home with threadworms due to the thumbsucking. I'm quite enjoying the break from those to be honest..

Honestly, the Prof has no idea
