Can someone explain to me India's numbers please the Coronavirus section of Worldometers
India has a huge population yet they "only" have 3 cases per million of the population and 0.09 deaths.
So many live in poverty, close together, hygiene, the lack of PPE - how can their statistics be right ?

EmMac7 · 06/04/2020 13:04

Re: cats, a study from Wuhan showed that 15% of 100+ cats they tested were positive for the virus.

Boris is still working but staying in for observation.

They can't.

I wonder what they are googling.

pocketem · 06/04/2020 13:08

@LadyEloise - a bit racist
India has has great success in avoiding/eliminating SARS, Swine flu, Bird flu etc before they took hold. They've got experience in this thing. Probably managing much better than "herd immunity" UK where even the doctors and nurses can't get hold of basic masks

pocketem · 06/04/2020 13:12

@sadpapercourtesan

Another two deaths in Scotland, bringing the total to 222

Oh lordy. Sky news will probably have a field day with this one...a priest opened his church yesterday and did a mass (which someone filmed in secret) no masks, communion wafers hadn't out (though the people I saw on the video did have gloves) He's just been interviewed and basically said he was in there alone and having a quiet pray and the people just fell in the door. Confused

NettleTea · 06/04/2020 13:23

The news on R4 is talking to Austria where they are talking about a stepped breaking of lockdown, with the hospitality industry coming last.

Im worried.
My daughter is in the most at risk group.
We have a glampingsite and I dont want it opened before she is safe because Im the one who has to clean, yet Im supposeed to be shielding her.

Id rather just be closed for the whole season and take the hit financially than risk her as we are all isolating.

also worrying about my son going back to school

MurrayTheMonk · 06/04/2020 13:28

Care home update-I'm on a long day today and knackered...about to take a (non infected) service user out in her wheelchair for our state sanctioned hours exercise.
I've taught the staff how to make dhal today because we are struggling to get pasta and enough rice for ten still and we had a bag of lentils... later on going to line up for kicks authority face masks again.
Had a little cry on my way to work this morning but actually felt a bit better for it weirdly-so onwards and upwards!

SansaSnark · 06/04/2020 13:33

I thought the point of lockdown was to protect everyone, not individuals. So, although I am in my 20s and live alone, if I am out and about more, and catch coronavirus, I could be wandering around spreading it for two weeks without ever knowing- so putting all the people at the local shops at risk, and anyone I pass on my way to and from work as well. I live in a flat with shared stairs, so I'd put the other two flats in this building at risk too. It's not about protecting me, it's about protecting the community.

As it happens, I work in a school, so apart from my rota'd days, I obviously wouldn't be going to work in person until schools reopen.

I'm not really sure how allowing 20-30yos into work would really benefit anyone, and many work places would presumably still be closed anyway.

I think that study has rather missed the point of having a lockdown.

conclusion for this pandemic:
don't ignore advice that experts give you.

SansaSnark · 06/04/2020 13:37

@NettleTea If the glamping site is your own, can't you just choose not to open it and take the financial hit anyway? Is there a reason you would have to open if lockdown was lifted?

@MurrayTheMonk It sounds like the situation is still really stressful for you. I really wish there was something I could do to help! I hope the rest of your day isn't too tiring and everyone enjoys their dhal.

DarnedSocks · 06/04/2020 13:45

I heard India made thousands and thousands of chloroquine pills available. I don't know if it really does work but it there's been reports suggesting it can work as a prophylactic. Might that explain their low figures? They also closed their borders fairly early on.

MarshaBradyo · 06/04/2020 13:47

Sansa I assumed it was an exit strategy rather than lockdown.

We need a way out of lock down before vaccine is here which may include treating less a risk differently.

I don’t know if they will consider it or not though.

littledrummergirl · 06/04/2020 13:51

It looks as though db has it. Fucking Cheltenham fucking races!
He works with the public in the area.

mrshoho · 06/04/2020 13:56

Is it time for Boris to delegate leadership temporarily? Whether he is now suffering moderately or severely he will need to rest. He is receiving oxygen at the very least and wouldn't it be better for him and the country to step away?

LadyEloise · 06/04/2020 13:58

pocketem
I certainly did not mean to be racist.
I don't live in the UK.
I just don't understand the stats.

SansaSnark · 06/04/2020 14:02

@MarshaBradyo I suppose it could work as a way to step out of full lockdown- but I think the Austrian model of opening certain businesses/workplaces makes more sense- whilst allowing those who need to shield to continue to shield.

I think allowing certain age groups out first could cause resentment both ways, which probably isn't what the country needs right now!

@mrshoho I think so, but I suppose Raab is doing most of the day to day stuff, and saying Boris is still in charge may be reassuring to some people.

Eeyoresstickhouse · 06/04/2020 14:19

403 died today. A significant drop but I suspect from weekend reporting not from any green shoots.

babychange12 · 06/04/2020 14:44

Why are death rates lower on the weekend? Is it to do with bureaucracy/paperwork?

namechangemania · 06/04/2020 14:44

441 new deaths according to the sun for the whole of UK.

Mittens030869 · 06/04/2020 14:49

There have been problems with counting in Scotland, which Nicola Sturgeon acknowledged and apologised for. There were officially only 2 deaths yesterday, which was never said to be the true number. There's also an issue with calculating deaths in nursing homes. So the numbers can't be trusted.

Justforthislifetime · 06/04/2020 14:56

Deaths are counted when they are reported and not necessarily when they actually happened and this may account for the weekend time lag?

RedToothBrush · 06/04/2020 15:02

Re India.

It's not about the quality of your healthcare with covid-19.

With covid-19, if it goes undetected for even a short time it becomes uncontrollable because of the infection rate.

That makes covid-19 a pure numbers game. And with the best will in the world population density and living conditions of everyone from rich to poor matters.

Especially if health care assess is not universal.

RedToothBrush · 06/04/2020 15:05

As has been said before, there isn't any health care system in the world geared up to deal with the challenges covid-19 poses because of the numbers involved. It's not about the quality of healthcare.
