Are people still ordering takeaway?

Just wondering how many of you are still ordering takeaways? DP really fancies a pizza tonight but I'm a bit weary of ordering just in case.

Am I worrying over nothing? Sorry, I know it's a first world problem.

Personally no. I cannot guarantee the people who are making my foods personal hygiene. I cannot risk it.

Genuine question, do you worry about it the rest of the time? I've been going to the same Indian for 20 years and I've trusted their hygiene all this time so I don't think any different now.

Here are the facts as I see them:

You can be symptomless and still infect people for up to 11 days. More usually though you know by day five. So on days 1 to 4 of being infected the person would attend work, in this case in a hot food takeaway shop, feeling well.

Factories processing foods have proper ppe style gear, beard nets, masks, gloves etc. So pre packaged foods should meet the highest quality standards. (For comparison purposes against hot food takeaways)

Compare that to the person cooking your takeaway. They will very very likely not have as much ppe. Possibly not even an apron let alone a mask or net in most, but not all, places. Depends. If I could see the chef wearing that lot I’d be happy. But you can’t usually see into the kitchens.

The virus passes silently in microscopic droplets of fluid in the air on breath even if you don’t cough or sneeze. The person preparing it will be standing very close to your food (

CendrillonSings · 03/04/2020 19:15

Exactly, Elieza. You’ve spelled out the risks very clearly.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 03/04/2020 19:17

We are, fish and chips tonight.

StrangerDays · 03/04/2020 19:18

@MsTSwift you might think about getting help if something so insignificant offends you. It's really nothing to grind your gears about.

CrazyToast · 03/04/2020 19:29

Yep pizza is on it's way.

Bohomie · 03/04/2020 19:34

We had a takeaway dessert last weekend, cookie dough, waffles and ice creams.
We had been in self isolation. Had no sweet foods left in the house and our DC had been exceptionally well behaved all week and deserved a treat while watching Saturday night TV

katienana · 03/04/2020 19:40

Yes. My household is not in a high risk group so I dont feel the need to eliminate the risk that this presents. I don't think its any riskier than me going to the supermarket. I get that it's not necessary but the benefits outweigh the risks for me

BlueJava · 03/04/2020 19:45

No we're not having them. I just don't fancy one to be honest, especially when thinking someone may have Covid-19 and cough on them when boxing! Probably unreasonable of me I know!

knittingaddict · 03/04/2020 19:55

I was listening to a podcast recently in which a doctor in the US was interviewed. He suggested the following advice for having takeaways:

Have a "dirty" area and a "clean" area and keep them separate.

Have some containers from your home ready and transfer the food from the takeaway containers.

Throw the takeaway packaging away. I suppose you could wash it in hot soapy water if you wanted to recycle it.

Obviously wash hands thoroughly.

For added protection either microwave or heat the food in an oven for a short time. (heat kills the virus).

We did this with a pizza last week and it might be a bit OTT, but it seemed like a sensible precaution. I would happily have another takeaway and do the same thing.

knittingaddict · 03/04/2020 20:00

The only issue I had was that I couldn't tip the pizza delivery man when he dropped it off. I would have liked to show my appreciation, especially at this difficult time.

Ginger1982 · 03/04/2020 20:01

We had one tonight. Sanitised hands before decanting it from packaging onto our own plates and then sanitised again before eating.

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 03/04/2020 20:03

Yes, we're still having takeaways. We had a Chinese from our local place last weekend and Dominos the week before. Bloody marvellous.

I agree it's no riskier than going to the supermarket, in fact probably far less so.

There is definitely an undercurrent of 'ugh, horrid minimum wage workers with their questionable personal hygiene' on this thread...

beautifulteeth · 03/04/2020 20:04

Nope

Dozer · 03/04/2020 20:05

Unnecessary risk from packaging etc

knittingaddict · 03/04/2020 20:05

My daughter ordered a chinese tonight. She's had a bad day. Oven fan packed in and orthodontist appointment cancelled. She's overdue having her braces checked and is really worried about the bands breaking and being in pain. She was a couple of weeks away from having them removed too. Sad

Haven't done in the past two weeks but would do, all the food safety authorities say food is not considered a source of transmission - and has not been for similar viruses in the past. So, I'd rather follow their guidance than believe armchair scientists on social media. In any case, if you think food is a risk, then you also can't buy any fresh food, bread etc. from the shops.

cocodomingo · 03/04/2020 20:17

Yes I cant be bothered to cook...need to treat the kids to putting up with me working from home. But it's so busy. No collections allowed and online quoting to order pizza. Was tempted to pop to sainsburys local and stick a pizza in the oven but I'd promised a treat...so still waiting

I bottled it guys 🤦‍♀️ Literally was on the website ready to order and I couldn't do it.

DP was very understanding (although I swear I saw him holding back tears 😁) and has cooked a lovely tea. I'm weak! 😂

Our favourite Indian takeaway reopened yesterday after doing some risk assessments. I am so excited!

But I've had it, and am now out of quarantine, I think I've passed it on to the rest of the family, so not worried about catching it, obviously just trying to stay at home so as not to spread it around by contact. So different risk for me I guess.

doghairismyglitter · 03/04/2020 21:54

Ditto, for those that are pretty certain they’ve had it and gone through quarantine/self isolation measures, a takeaway wouldn’t be a risk surely?

I had my first take away EVER as a single person ordering, (I.e not with a partner or friends) last night & actually preferred it as they just left it outside my front door, didn’t set the dog off barking with knocking, didn’t wake the kids, was ideal!

Astressedmumoftwo · 03/04/2020 21:56

Indian on its way. And dessert 😳

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 03/04/2020 21:58

I'm probably ordering tomorrow. DH was a bit concerned but the more we talked about a curry the more he wanted one!
