Are people still ordering takeaway?

Just wondering how many of you are still ordering takeaways? DP really fancies a pizza tonight but I'm a bit weary of ordering just in case.

Am I worrying over nothing? Sorry, I know it's a first world problem.

We've had 4 this week. Confused

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 03/04/2020 15:33

We are still doing takeaways / deliveries. Porch delivery (contactless) and I bring the food in wearing gloves, wipe containers (like wiping your groceries), transfer onto our own crockery and wash hands thoroughly. Food contamination is not worrying me because cooking will kill the virus. I also like the fact that we’re supporting local restaurants / businesses through this crisis.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 03/04/2020 15:38

Were having our first of the crisis tomorrow night, curry I think, it's literally the most exciting thing that will have happened to me for about three weeks.

MoreGruel · 03/04/2020 15:39

I don’t think @mrstswift was bitchy. Her comment was polite and if I was misusing a common expression I would much rather be told than keep doing it and have people think I didn’t understand.

PeytonManning · 03/04/2020 15:46

Yes we are, once or twice a week, from restaurants we love and don’t want to lose. Pay by card on phone, they leave it at door. The staff are all wearing gloves and masks too because they don’t want to catch it anymore than their customers do.

MirandaWest · 03/04/2020 15:47

We're having pizza tonight

OurGardenShed · 03/04/2020 16:00

We’re still having takeaways.
One local curry house has offered to shop and deliver basic groceries to anyone who needs a little extra help. I’m happy to give them my custom.
Another curry house in addition to their normal menu is making a limited range of their curries and sundries and delivering them chilled.

CinderellasSecrets · 03/04/2020 16:03

I work at a takeaway. We are busier now than we were at Christmas (usually the busiest time of year). We are literally struggling to keep up with the orders (delivery area being made smaller, menu might be getting reduced to the most popular items, much longer delivery times than usual etc.) Where I work it is contactless delivery only and we are all extremely vigilant about hygiene. Myself and others have young children/vulnerable family members/health conditions so we want to take care of ourselves as well as the customer obviously, so I don't think the risk is especially high - some of the comments I've seen about takeaway workers have a bit rude to say the least. You probably have the same amount of risk as if you go to the supermarket.

HairyToity · 03/04/2020 16:09

Husband is in a high risk group. At the moment no to takeaways (better safe than sorry) but we have both said if we feel our mental health is struggling then we will risk a takeaway curry (with a bottle of wine) and film on Netflix.

Sakura7 · 03/04/2020 16:09

Our local Indian is fab and the staff are wonderful, so we're ordering once a week to support them. Apparently business is very quiet, I hope they can stay afloat.

JustMySize · 03/04/2020 16:09

No, we haven't ordered a takeaway since all this started, even though DH would love one, he thinks it's too dangerous no matter what the government says.

Think about it, the food is delivered to the store, or even someone from the store goes to a shop to buy it, then strangers prep the food, then another stranger delivers the food.

No, I don't think I will have a takeaway anytime soon.

And FYI I don't like cafe's or restaurants either.

midgebabe · 03/04/2020 16:14

Isn't the advice that cooked food is fine as the virus hates heat?
So get your takeaway, pop it carefully out of the container onto a plate and wash your hands
Doorstep delivery drop means no interaction needed , probably better than hanging around in a shop

sam221 · 03/04/2020 16:15

I really would not order a takeaway whilst everyone is in lockdown. Some of the people who work in these places will be threatened into working by money greedy bosses. No safety equipment or social distancing will done/given.

Most of the people will be on NMW and the prospect losing their jobs, will mean they will still go in.
The Government actually has done a good job helping the catering/hospitality industry, most workers can be furloughed and business support is being given.

Placing workers into danger, for something wholly unnecessary and just for profits of unscrupulous bosses is not something I would engage in.

Sorry if this offends anyone, but I have a lot of friends and few family members who are restaurateurs. The sensible ones have completely shut, as they do not wish to place their staff in danger and the ones open just don't care.
I have a family member who runs an Indian restaurant, he has switched to takeaways and has really heavily leaned on staff to come in.
Most of which use public transport to go into work.
The staff in a lot of these restaurants come from communities who live in mixed generation households. Therefore other vulnerable elderly family members are placed into danger.
According to the disgusting family member restaurateur, they are making more money now, as they have a 'captive audience'.
Apologies for the longer post but anyone thinking you are helping by ordering takeaways, you are not but actually adding to the problems of some of the lowest paid workers.
I now no longer will ever have anything to do with certain family members, as I hate the exploitation and the danger their staff are being subjected too. Legal or not, morally to me it is wrong.

Igotthemheavyboobs · 03/04/2020 16:16

No we have stopped ordering takeaways completely. It's going to save us money and I just don't see the point when we can have a much more fun mystery dinner of 'guess what I found in the cupboard today'.

Megan2018 · 03/04/2020 16:17

No takeaways here but our local pubs (very rural) are doing takeaway food including delivery. DH managed to get me a gorgeous roast dinner delivered last weekend (as we are in isolation).
They need help to stay afloat, our local closed for a week to allow them to change the kitchens to allow for distancing and to create a takeaway menu. You order and pay over the phone then collect from the porch of pub/have it delivered for small fee so there is no physical interaction necessary.
We are going to have a weekly treat meal.

soundsystem · 03/04/2020 16:18

We're still getting them. It's nice to have a great given we can't go out for food, drinks, coffee...

Although the last one we had they missed off DH's main course! And were then too busy to send it so a minor disappointment there!

WanderingLost167 · 03/04/2020 16:21

Yup, few local places are doing it

HeyPizza · 03/04/2020 16:23

Can I ask what sites people use to order?

Justeat, Ubereats, Deliveroo - or direct?

I have no experience of this but I would like a chicken burger.

Rocketmam · 03/04/2020 16:24

No...

Only because if what I saw late last year when picking up a dominos. One of the kitchen staff was coughing intermittently and not covering his mouth. He wasn't persobally handling the food, but right next to him was another member of staff cutting up a pizza ready for delivery.

So the idea that cooking food kills the virus is no comfort to me. It only takes an asymptomatic person to touch their face and then the food with their gloves on, or someone falling ill to start coughing next to open food boxes being prepared after cooking for delivery.

Not worth the risk for us. Could do with losing some weight anyway!

Lifeisabeach09 · 03/04/2020 16:27

Still order takeaways. Ordered and paid online and left outside my door. Empty bag in kitchen, wash hands, empty out into dishes then wash hands again.
I'm way more likely to get virus whilst at work or going to the supermarket so I'll take my chances with a takeaway. Grin

Aswad · 03/04/2020 16:30

I’ve been craving takeaway for the longest time but I can’t help but think some evil person will cough on my food!! I hope that’s an extreme reaction but unfortunately not worth the risk 😔

Pishposhpashy · 03/04/2020 16:32

Yep, got one coming tonight. Yum!

bibbidybobbidyboo · 03/04/2020 16:35

Yes. We've made it a weekly Friday ritual - our one way of signalling that the working week is over and the weekend has begun, even though it's all taking place inside the same four walls. Tonight will be our third.

Do it if you want to and enjoy!

WhateverHappenedToBathPearls · 03/04/2020 16:39

Yes, planning on getting pizza tonight.
