There has been a [[https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/scots-amazon-depot-hit-coronavirus-21792591?fbclid=IwAR03giRYScdXJOAh7HgFQuuLGIsdQ2zoh1fEQmVgu9fduZ28ywN8Hs9BClc confirmed case] of COVID 19 in the Amazon warehouse where my sister works. The guy works the nightshift, as does my sister.

Please think before you order.

Are you saying that we might catch it or are you saying that folk should stop ordering non-essentials?

Who polices that then?

Deux · 01/04/2020 16:08

How do you define unnecessary? And how would you know the reason behind the purchase?

GalOopNorth · 01/04/2020 16:09

If everyone stops ordering from Amazon, surely that’s another several thousand people out of work?

Deux · 01/04/2020 16:10

The economy is collapsing around our ears and the government are actively encouraging commerce in person and online with those retailers who are permitted to trade.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 01/04/2020 16:10

If Amazon don't want people to order they need to close. While they are open people will use them. Clearly they value their profits over their staff.

Gingerkittykat · 01/04/2020 16:20

Yes, Amazon cares more about their profits than their staff and they will be making a killing right now.

What one person considers essential someone else will find trivial but I bet the majority of orders from Amazon right now are not essential at all.

ACautionaryTale · 01/04/2020 16:20

Sorry no.

i've just ordered a load of wool from amazon and other places.

If I can't knit I'll be mad by the end of this mess

TheOtherSideOfTheMountain · 01/04/2020 16:23

I agree - are we talking not ordering due to risk of spreading virus via packages (which I have to say, I've worried about)? Or to spare staff? Because without orders, a lot of staff will be jobless and business ruined. And these "non essentials" are the little glimmers of joy keeping an awful lot of people going...

To posters nodding along to 'stop ordering online' requests -

Pre virus how much did you worry about workers conditions when ordering stuff online? In all honesty? Workers here and workers abroad. The people making the stuff, packing it and delivering it. Will this have made a difference to how you shop when all this is over?

Wineiscooling · 01/04/2020 16:38

My son's birthday coming up so I've ordered off Amazon and also ordered som board games we can play as a family and some crafts

Inmyivorytower · 01/04/2020 16:40

I’ve ordered and paid for some unnecessary jewellery. The craftsman thanked me as he can now buy food for the next three weeks.
You need to be more specific in your demands, OP.

lanbro · 01/04/2020 16:43

I've moved in with xh temporarily for the sake of the dc, the gin I've ordered from Amazon is absolutely essential to get thru this...

DontGoIntoTheLongGrass · 01/04/2020 16:44

I've ordered some more battery powered camping lights in case of blackouts. I have rechargeable batteries.

I'm prepping...

Haffiana · 01/04/2020 16:47

Amazon will be distributing the Covid19 testing kit. If everyone stops ordering from them then they will not be able to keep going in order to do so.

Rocketmam · 01/04/2020 16:48

The amazon delivery driver puts the parcels by the back door. Dh dons his gloves and puts them in the shed, where we leave them for 5 days (he then washes/antibacs hands and door handles etc. just in case). When I get them out the boxes go straight in to recycling and the contents are bleached to within an inch to their life before entering the house.

If we get it then I'm going to put it down to divine retribution! Grin

ReginaGeorgeous · 01/04/2020 16:50

I had some toys delivered yesterday. My daughter is five next week. She’s had her party cancelled, her holiday cancelled and she’s missing her friends and family.
She’s not going without presents as well.

MamaDane · 01/04/2020 16:51

I've personally ordered a bunch online. Food, baby clothes, other baby stuff, medicine, hell.. Even a sex toy 😉.
People are being encouraged to order online here and keep the businesses going. So 👍🏻

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 01/04/2020 16:51

The economy would be utterly fucked if people stopped buying non essentials online. Think about it, how long would that be sustainable?

Government advice to to only buy essentials in person.

Suniscomingout · 01/04/2020 16:52

We could all try to order from smaller businesses and avoid Amazon.

EasyTarget · 01/04/2020 16:53

I will keep ordering online to support the economy, and help keep mental health in check.

FaFoutis · 01/04/2020 16:56

My son's birthday this week, I have ordered his presents from Amazon sellers. People need jobs.

Chinks123 · 01/04/2020 16:57

I’ve ordered some weighing scales, since I can’t go to my weekly weigh in and I want to maintain my target weight.
I’ve ordered a cot for ds.
Some kitchen cupboard handles.
Some books for dd.
A birthday cake for dp.
Mixture of eBay, Tesco and Argos. There are loads more things I would usually be buying but I am trying to limit.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 01/04/2020 18:12

I have bought stuff for our key worker children to do at school. We need to keep them happy and healthy so needs must!
