There has been a [[https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/scots-amazon-depot-hit-coronavirus-21792591?fbclid=IwAR03giRYScdXJOAh7HgFQuuLGIsdQ2zoh1fEQmVgu9fduZ28ywN8Hs9BClc confirmed case] of COVID 19 in the Amazon warehouse where my sister works. The guy works the nightshift, as does my sister.

Please think before you order.

Yes, Amazon cares more about their profits than their staff and they will be making a killing right now.

Yeah, Amazon are not going to have turned into a fine, upstanding employer due to this. If people usually order from Amazon this is unlikely to make them change their minds.

lentenwonder · 01/04/2020 18:30

Half of all businesses that sell through amazon are small businesses - remember it’s a seller of warehouse space and shop front too.

Amazon delivers essential and non essential stuff as do many supermarkets.

TreeTopTim · 01/04/2020 18:30

I have just ordered storage boxes online. I saw someone buying them in the supermarket the other day so why can I not buy them online.

Who gets to decide what is unnecessary?

StatisticallyChallenged · 01/04/2020 18:39

If people all stop ordering that will be even more companies closed, even more people out of work, and even more businesses which will collapse. We need as much of the economy as possible to keep going and that includes online trade. The repercussions for the closures so far are already going to be long lasting

Hannah021 · 01/04/2020 18:45

I think asking ppl not to order is not the right thing to do.
staff who dont want to work should speak to their leads. Their lives matter too.
but many people need the jobs and dont want to be jobless. Many ppl right now are looking for jobs.

When we stop ordering we r risking jobs for those who want to work.

Pipandmum · 01/04/2020 18:49

@Suniscomingout many independent people sell through Amazon. It's a shop front not just an end retailer.
I've ordered lots of nonessential things, including wool for the new craft my daughter and I have started to learn.
I ordered a takeaway for my birthday dinner this week - the local restaurant would close of they didn't do takeaways.
I ordered soy candles from a woman who had just opened her first shop two weeks before lockdown- she'd go under (actually probably still will sadly) if she didn't keep selling online.
There will be a huge economic cost to the virus. Keeping money flowing through the system will help.

Mascotte · 01/04/2020 18:49

I don’t agree either. Some business should keep running and it’s allowed. To be honest, as my job has gone I’d be pleased to keep mine.

MarshaBradyo · 01/04/2020 18:50

I’ve very much reduced ordering stuff I don’t need.

minimummum · 01/04/2020 18:55

I have ordered things like birthday gifts as I can get them delivered direct.
I personally think it's helping businesses and delivery services. No One will mind if the delivery takes a little longer. Well you would think not.

I frequently order online and will continue to do so. If everyone stopped buying then the economy would be even more in a mess than it is and potential more jobs lost in the long term.

So no I won't be stopping.

Wannabangbang · 01/04/2020 19:01

Its the only way to keep my kids happy at the moment, craft supplies. Much more dangerous for me to go and get them and also craft shops all closed...

MarshaBradyo · 01/04/2020 19:01

I’m not doing restaurants but I have done some local fresh food suppliers.

That nazi term is really tedious should be binned.

cologne4711 · 01/04/2020 19:05

You can't define what a necessary item is.

Why are people so judgey and wanting to police everyone else?

Just mind your own business and go and watch a boxset or something.

MrsSnitchnose · 01/04/2020 19:06

I always order most of my things from Amazon. Today I have ordered a book and a new hairdryer.

There are enough people unemployed without making things worse. The economy is relying on those of us who can spend, to do so.

I've also been browsing ceremonial knives. Once I find one I like, I will be purchasing one of those too any recommendations from Wiccans greatly received

onetimeprepper · 01/04/2020 19:17

You do realise the people ordering all this are keeping those other people in jobs right?

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 01/04/2020 19:26

Being able to buy online is helping people to stay at home. We need people to stay at home.

If buying a sewing pattern, or some wool, a book or whatever means that someone can stay indoors and occupy themselves ,then what they are buying is necessary.

SonjaMorgan · 01/04/2020 19:31

Please keep on ordering and supporting small sellers too. There will be self employed individuals in that group who have been trading for less than a year. I have friends who sell on eBay who are in this situation and struggling to live off savings.

Poor people Sparkling

NaP have stopped distribution and are using their vans for food deliveries. It puts them in a good light.

PumpkinP · 01/04/2020 23:24

I will continue to. It’s dd birthday soon. Am I just not meant to buy her anything Confused this is hard enough for kids without cancelling their birthday aswell. I’ve also ordered new iPads because the kids are bored stiff and new dvds because I can’t entertain them endlessly. Judge away!

SnoozyLou · 01/04/2020 23:40

The government haven't said you can't order "unnecessary" items.

MigginsMrs · 01/04/2020 23:54

Businesses are actually allowed to open and trade if they haven’t been closed by the government. People are going to get the virus everywhere anyway, people going to work has been factored into the modelling. The aim of the measures we have isn’t to stop every person in the country getting it, it’s to minimise and slow the spread.

So as long as retailers keep open and I want and need stuff I’ll continue to order.

Marieo · 02/04/2020 00:01

I wouldn't say Amazon has ever been a beacon of an ethical workplace, this certainly wouldn't make them all of a sudden give a hoot.

MigginsMrs · 02/04/2020 00:01

And yes I have also been ordering birthday presents for my son. His birthday is going to be shite enough compared to what we’d had planned, he’s not doing without a few presents either on the say so of some busybody on mumsnet. Or maybe we should just sit in the house with our celebratory bread and water and be grateful we’re all just alive, no non essentials either
