There has been a [[https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/scots-amazon-depot-hit-coronavirus-21792591?fbclid=IwAR03giRYScdXJOAh7HgFQuuLGIsdQ2zoh1fEQmVgu9fduZ28ywN8Hs9BClc confirmed case] of COVID 19 in the Amazon warehouse where my sister works. The guy works the nightshift, as does my sister.

Please think before you order.

This week, I have ordered coffee filters (none in supermarkets) fine dry wipe markers (for ds2's handwriting sheets from school) new kitchen knife (one I have is so blunt it's getting dangerous and I've been meaning to replace it since Christmas) and new sharpener.

rjebgf · 02/04/2020 00:35

It’s really difficult though. As places are closed, people need to do stuff that they don’t have the kit for and hence the online orders are made. My vets aren’t doing routine things like dog nails being clipped. So I bought clippers off amazon to do it myself. The dog has really long nails and started biting his feet.
Ds’s school sent through a list of books to read. I am considering ordering them from Amazon. I have also bought textbooks from Amazon to help my Y9 child’s education which is now taking place at home. I bought paper online so the kids could do their work (both secondary). Although I won’t die without these items, I am expected to have/get them.
I hope your sister is ok.

MintyMabel · 02/04/2020 00:38

DD’s birthday at the end of this month. She has missed a whole bunch of stuff over the past couple of years, had a really shit time and now we were coming out of it this crap hits. She is struggling with not being at school, missing her extended family, she is dealing with it all in a really mature manner (as she does) and said she wouldn’t mind if she doesn’t get her birthday on her birthday.

But, you bet your arse I’m going to try and get her stuff for her 11th birthday.

It’s fashionable to slag off amazon for how it treats its staff, but one look at Glassdoor shows that 76% of staff would recommend it to a friend. That’s based on thousands of reviews.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 02/04/2020 01:02

I don't get the whole don't order anything non essential.
I'm staying in I still want books and my clothes are falling to pieces.
Essential in my eyes but not to others, we're all different

Babyroobs · 02/04/2020 01:05

I ordered hair dye. seems like everyone else did too as it's not arriving for another few weeks. Hopefully my grey roots wont be too noticeable by then.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 02/04/2020 01:08

Or maybe we should just sit in the house with our celebratory bread and water and be grateful we’re all just alive, no non essentials either
My birthday soon, going by MN heaven forbid nothing nice!!!
Luckily I'm adult and happy with what I can get and understand situation.

Exactly

Partyforone · 02/04/2020 01:10

Ive been lusting after an exceptionally luxurious bathrobe since 1997, today I treated myself, safe in the knowledge that as its made in the uk by a small company, the price is unimportant as Im helping a british company stay afloat. To me thats a win win situation.

Insideout99 · 02/04/2020 01:20

Love how concerned people are about birthdays when hundreds of workers are crammed into warehouses side by side sorting out your 'essential' items. I know for a fact I wouldn't want my child working there right now. Especially as they have those in the vulnerable category at work...

EffOrf · 02/04/2020 03:34

All my stuff is essential to me OP so I will order what I want, you don't need to order anything if you don't want to.

Fed up of the dictators on here

Dongdingdong · 02/04/2020 07:16

There was an interview in the Guardian recently with a delivery driver, who said he was pleased that people are ordering stuff as it’s keeping him in a job.

lentenwonder · 02/04/2020 07:23

@Partyforone I’d have thought now was a good time to order a lovely bathrobe - hope you enjoy it.

babbi · 02/04/2020 07:25

@Insideout99. I couldn’t agree more ...

Lougle · 02/04/2020 07:33

DD3 came downstairs in tears last night, asking if she could have a doctor's mask for her birthday so she could hug her Nanny and Grandad. I've ordered her presents from Amazon and selected 'make as few deliveries as possible'.

I'm not going to make her go without presents as well as hugs and a nice family tea, etc.

Sounsociable · 02/04/2020 07:36

I ordered ink for the printer because a lot of the kids school stuff requires printing, and I need to print things for work. I also considered ordering some exercise equipment although I know that's not essential. I wont be ordering much else though as will be on 80% salary soon.

AuntieMarys · 02/04/2020 07:40

I'm expecting a gin package tomorrow from Craft Gin and some things for dhs birthday. Also skin supplies.

Hellokittymania · 02/04/2020 07:43

If you can easily get everything you need… That’s one thing… Try being up in a position where you can’t even get food… And yes, people suggest things, mutual aid groups, lots of things… But getting help is another thing… It’s very difficult, very frustrating, it takes lots of work and sometimes things fall through… I’m thinking God there’s Amazon right now. Some of us have no choice, and there are lots of essential items on Amazon…

bellinisurge · 02/04/2020 07:46

Another person with a child's birthday coming up. I had bought her presents in advance but I felt that buying some crappy sparkly decorations for the house via Amazon would make it slightly less shit for her 13th - she had loads of plans before this to hang out with her mates. I feel so sorry for her and we have a post lockdown Must Do list for when this is over.
I've also put a three line whip out to family members to send her a card which I did just before lockdown. My sibling has ordered and had delivered here a present.
Is there a chance that somewhere in all that virus can make its way into our house despite me having disinfectant wipe down bits at the door as subtly hidden as possible? Yes. Of course.
I'm willing to take that risk.

ScrapThatThen · 02/04/2020 07:47

We should order from a range of places we need an economy (including Amazon) and we need people to have some sense of normality and ability to get things to avoid unrest.

getmetomars · 02/04/2020 07:48

This.

Someone on YouTube, a vlogger who I will not name, did a day in the life video and toys recommendations for your children... with 13 affiliate links on Amazon!

GreenTulips · 02/04/2020 07:56

I’m sorry your sister is at risk OP.

My DD is also at risk from people buying mascara and eyeshadow. (Not Amazon)

I feel sick every time she leaves the house for her 8 hour shift.

These people are paid minimum wage and are being regularly abused by people who ‘needs x y z’

I wouldn’t be a retail worker at the moment and I think enough people have demonstrated their entitlement on here and justify their actions as a ‘must have’

How poor children will miss out etc when they are safely at home and will live.

ShootsFruitAndLeaves · 02/04/2020 08:01

For people determined to completely and utterly destroy the economy, how about, "No"?

bellinisurge · 02/04/2020 08:08

I think we are all learning a valuable lesson in what a key worker is.

Aridane · 02/04/2020 08:10

To posters nodding along to 'stop ordering online' requests -

Pre virus how much did you worry about workers conditions when ordering stuff online? In all honesty? Workers here and workers abroad. The people making the stuff, packing it and delivering it. Will this have made a difference to how you shop when all this is over?

THIS!

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 02/04/2020 08:12

My postman just handed me a massive sack of knitting wool (in a clear bag), ordered from a local shop. Unnecessary? I mean, I won't starve without it, but then I am also shut in a house for the foreseeable, we do need something to occupy us.

Bananabixfloof · 02/04/2020 08:14

One persons necessity is another's crap

Agree, the books I've ordered via Amazon but a private seller will hopefully keep me from going nuts, theres only so much internet I can do, i hate TV, i would knit but i dont have enough equipment and not that much money to buy new. I sorely wish i could order a haircut online.
Am sure non readers would be horrified by my choices. But i have to do something to pass time. Pretty sure eating is not a good waste of time because I'll get fat. I'm used to walking around 20 miles a day in my Job, I'm missing that exercise and trying not to eat as much as usual. But damn its hard without something else to distract me.
So buy away people, lets do our bit to keep businesses going.
