There has been a [[https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/scots-amazon-depot-hit-coronavirus-21792591?fbclid=IwAR03giRYScdXJOAh7HgFQuuLGIsdQ2zoh1fEQmVgu9fduZ28ywN8Hs9BClc confirmed case] of COVID 19 in the Amazon warehouse where my sister works. The guy works the nightshift, as does my sister.

Please think before you order.

I've had several orders with Amazon recently, for food, medicines, plastic gloves, medical thermometer. The only "non essential" thing I've ordered is a garden badminton set, which I thought would provide exercise and entertainment in the garden.

When the deliveries arrive, they are left in the porch, so no contact with the delivery driver. I pick up the packages and put them in the spare room, which has become our "quarantine area" for stuff entering the house. I then thoroughly wash my hands and leave the stuff untouched for 4 days, by which time any potential virus contamination will have died.

I would think that the drivers are relieved to still have plenty of work available for them.

tapdancingmum · 02/04/2020 09:27

I tried to order a frying pan and mixing bowl from Amazon who has deemed them unnecessary and won't deliver until May 5th! I cancelled it and ordered from EBay instead as I'll get them this week. They may not be necessary to Amazon but they are to me.

Unfortunately, until these warehouses are closed people will continue to use them and it is so easy to use Amazon. They are generally the cheapest with the quickest delivery but I think now I'll start using the online shops on Ebay. At least I'll be supporting somebody's business rather than a global corporation.

caperberries · 02/04/2020 09:28

As an aside, that Daily Record is hilariously parochial & Scots-centric, most of the stories on the sidebar seem to begin with the word 'Scots'.
As in, "Scots mum warns..", "Scots brewery closes...", "Scots man arrested" etc

Abraid2 · 02/04/2020 09:30

Agree, the books I've ordered via Amazon but a private seller

Unless they are selling them new in the truest sense of the word the author will receive no royalties. Even new books sold on marketplace are usually remaindered or reviews copies.

Sotiredofthislife · 02/04/2020 09:30

I am getting diabetic supplies from Amazon and make no apology for it. Prescription has not been filled for these items so we have no choice. Might not be essential to you but is helping us manage my little boy’s condition.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 02/04/2020 09:33

Oh get over yourself OP. If there is no restriction on ordering products then I don't know why you're there wagging your finger. Just stop it.

We need a 'Frother's Corner' for the 'basket police'.

I will just leave this here

*To posters nodding along to 'stop ordering online' requests -

Pre virus how much did you worry about workers conditions when ordering stuff online? In all honesty? Workers here and workers abroad. The people making the stuff, packing it and delivering it. Will this have made a difference to how you shop when all this is over?*

My thoughts exactly.

Deathraystare · 02/04/2020 09:35

Sorry Highligting fail!

Moomin8 · 02/04/2020 09:35

Yes let's make life even more unbearable by not ordering things we need slightly less than toilet paper. Fabulous idea Hmm

1forsorrow · 02/04/2020 09:38

I've ordered handcream. I need it. I always thought I was good at washing my hands, I now realise I was just filthy as washing my hands properly and often enough has left with with very sore hands with cracked skin. I hope the cracks don't let the virus in as if they do I'm done for. I've used up all my stock of expensive (for me) face cream trying to rescue my hands so now my face is feeling all tight as well.

Sorry but I do think it is essential.

dottiedodah · 02/04/2020 09:38

Well I have bought some eye drops and deep heat, as dont fancy the Chemist right now TBH! Also some blusher and luxury hand cream for cheese grater hands! If no one bought anything at all they would be having problems as well! What about post , junk mail and so on ?

MangoesAreMyFavourite · 02/04/2020 09:38

I've been ordering all the things I can't get from the supermarket. Honey, jam, Nutella.... Non essential as we will live without them but they keep the kids happy.
Also cleaning products, gloves etc.

I also have a 500gm packet of pasta due to arrive in May! Who knows .. it might make our day! Smile

Moomin8 · 02/04/2020 09:39

The stories about how badly Amazon treats their staff have been accessible for years.

www.theguardian.com/technology/2018/jul/30/accidents-at-amazon-workers-left-to-suffer-after-warehouse-injuries

The issue with Amazon is separate from people ordering online. Although we should be concerned about it I agree. And, they are advertising for staff.

Mascotte · 02/04/2020 09:39

I like the idea of the Basket Police 😃

I had to make sure I did SmartShop the other day so I could sneak a mascara swiftly into my own bag....

PinkyU · 02/04/2020 09:42

@casperberries it’s a Scottish newspaper, based in Scotland, published in Scotland, about Scottish news. Ya fucking numpty.

Solomangrundy · 02/04/2020 09:52

I’ve ordered a box of kitchen rolls (shared out amongst friends as none available during the ‘panic buying’🙄) some books and dvd box sets from Amazon - nothing’s changed as I’ve always done that. The difference being is that the box sets are now a treat in the evenings, and the books are for bedtime reading when I can’t sleep. I’m a widow, just me and the Dog here, and, no, I won’t be changing what I do!
We can’t go out, can’t meet up with friends, get told off for going for a walk... I’m buggered if I’m giving up these other little pleasures😳
Oh - and I also buy ‘unnecessary’ chocolate when I shop!
So shoot me! 🤷‍♀️

PinkyU · 02/04/2020 09:53

My oh is a delivery driver, he’s out all day, has no access to soap and water, no PPE, no gloves, no sanitizer and is delivering dozens upon dozens of items.

Even with social distancing he is at high risk of catching the virus due to the multiple points of handling a package goes through.

I am in the very vulnerable group due to severe congenital heart disease causing heart failure.

My 3 young children think that their mummy’s life is more important than your bottle opener, your wool, yes even your kids birthday present. I don’t want to increase my risk of dying because you want some pretty things.

So true. Who among us hasn't bought some unnecessary piece of clothing, popping it in to our real life or online basket with no thought to the fact that it was sewn by a slave in a garment factory that has all the doors locked and anti suicide nets outside the windows.

Closer to home, amazon warehouses are known for having terrible working conditions, there has even been a tell all book written about it. It's often been discussed on here and everyone agrees it's unfortunate but "it's just so convenient".

GreyGardens88 · 02/04/2020 10:00

I ordered a kindle last night, sorry but I'm about to be made redundant, have no books in the flat, and confined to one room in a flat share. Not apologising.

1300cakes · 02/04/2020 10:00

As a front line worker myself (nhs) I sympathise, but he has the same choice we all have - risk it or quit. He is at exactly the same risk whether the parcels are "essential" (as defined by who?) or unessential.

ChrisPrattsFace · 02/04/2020 10:04

We’ve been ordering off amazon, for both our hobbies and things for our son and dogs.
In the grand scheme of thing they’re not essential, but they’re helping us all get through a difficult time.
Equally, I can’t afford to order the same things from small local businesses, because they’re usually about double the price. I love amazon 😂

HoffiCoffi13 · 02/04/2020 10:05

PinkyU I’m sorry your partner isn’t being looked after properly by his company.
What would happen to his job if people stopped ordering things?

Port1aCastis · 02/04/2020 10:10

Please quit the virtue signalling and remember that we all order from amazon etc etc and if we didn't they'd go under and then some bright spark would be starting threads about the redundant staff being on benefits and how their taxes would be paying for it
Supermarket staff NHS staff are all on the front line too but nobody wants us to boycott them do they?
