I mean, I don’t know anything extra, I just reread the extract from the WHO advice posted above.

TheMidnightSpecial · 03/04/2020 11:54

I know, I meant it's so different from the coronaviruses which cause some common colds.

The WHO stated that people with Covid-19 can still be infectious for up to 14 days AFTER symptoms end. It was weeks ago they said this.

However current UK government advice is still to isolate for the 7/14 days.

Maybe our government don't know that yet. Also, that WHO advice is for the households of those who have it.

AliciaWhiskers · 03/04/2020 12:04

Agree with @TheMidnightSpecial the WHO did say age ago that people remain infectious for a long time after their symptoms have gone. There is research evidence to back this up (although I can't remember where I read it). I suspect the viral load will be lower by that point but it's not nothing at all.

Mittens030869 · 03/04/2020 12:07

It figures that I would still be infectious from my (untested) COVID-19, as I'm still symptomatic over 3 weeks after going down with it. I still have a bad cough and I've had a hard time believing I stopped being infectious after 14 days.

Thankfully I'm on the mend now, finally, I just have a very painful chest injury (pulled muscle from all the coughing and I still have bad nausea.

The government will have to change their stance on this, otherwise the infection rate will continue to rise, I think.

A total of 172 patients have died in Scotland after testing positive for coronavirus, up by 46 from 126 on Thursday.

3,001 people have now tested positive for the virus in Scotland, up from 2,602 the day before.
176 people are in intensive care with coronavirus or coronavirus symptoms, and increase of 14 on yesterday.

MurrayTheMonk · 03/04/2020 13:03

I really think I'm still not over whatever I've had after 14 days-My chest is still not clear and I'm knackered and still occasionally a bit warmer than I should be for no real reason. And I've got an awful headache. But again-could still be anything 🤷🏽‍♀️

TheMidnightSpecial · 03/04/2020 13:13

@AliciaWhiskers

Study in the Lancet says 8-24 days the virus is still detectable after symptom resolution. Guessing that's what the WHO are basing their recommendations on.
www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(20)30566-3/fulltext#seccestitle10

But then there's this article, with links to a German study where researchers tried to actually grow live virus from the viral particles found in the throats of recovered patients who had had milder illness, and found that they could only grow viable (ie infectable) particles for a maximum of 8 days after recovery.
www.statnews.com/2020/03/09/people-shed-high-levels-of-coronavirus-study-finds-but-most-are-likely-not-infectious-after-recovery-begins/

The Lancet study just pcr tested, they didn't check the viability of their samples. However, I'm sure the WHO know what they are talking about when reviewing data and studies.

There's another article by a virology professor who says the findings that people are even infectious for 9 days into illness, are 'nonsense' . Although I guess the German study proves her wrong maybe??
www.cambridgeindependent.co.uk/news/cambridge-virologist-explains-what-we-know-and-dont-know-about-covid-19-9104220/?fbclid=IwAR08v9VYZVkTYXNtw_QXG4FROLsDeYvkXmOqewIytKgMPqip6QqKAim3aKU

I don't know what to believe, but I presume WHO know what they are talking about

mrshoho · 03/04/2020 13:20

Boris has done another video message. He still has a raised temp so remaining in isolation.

Helenj1977 · 03/04/2020 13:31

Anyone else in disbelief at the 'hospital' opening?

Yes, it's amazing what they've achieved but surely it should have been quietly opened for the first patients when needed.

It didn't sit right with me.

mrshoho · 03/04/2020 13:47

Yes Helen it feels like more propaganda and 'showing off' to other countries. What they don't show is the terrors going on in some of our existing ICU wards and emergency departments.

Egghead68 · 03/04/2020 13:52

Another one of Boris’s big show projects.

buttermilkwaffles · 03/04/2020 13:54

"Many people feel depressed about the COVID-19 situation, and it is without doubt a horrible tragedy.

But many people are rising to the occasion, and there’s a lot of good news mixed in with the bad.

The media has a tendency to give extra coverage to the negative because readers find it more eye-catching.

So in the interests of balance, here’s some positive things we’ve learned in the last week while writing articles on how to tackle the coronavirus crisis through volunteering, donations, or policy change."

Gammeldragz · 03/04/2020 13:56

The nurse dying really got to me today, we are the same age (OK, she was a year older), both have 3 children and both qualified last year. I know her being an ITU nurse puts her at much greater risk, while I am relatively safe in my role (General practice), but it just made it seem so much closer to home.

About to see my first confirmed case this afternoon, thank God our PPE arrived this week!

Delatron · 03/04/2020 13:59

So sad about the young nurses.

Is it generally accepted that viral load can make this virus more severe? Therefore repeat exposures from very ill patients (in a hospital setting) is more risky than picking the virus up from a surface say?

Saucery · 03/04/2020 14:05

Studies on Coronavirus in animals years ago show that viral load is a major factor in severity. I can’t believe we are sending HCPs in to fight this without adequate PPE. It’s sickening to see.

EmMac7 · 03/04/2020 14:06

As of 9am on 3 April 2020, 173,784 people have been tested, of which 38,168 were confirmed positive.

As of 5pm on 2 April 2020, of those hospitalised in the UK who tested positive for coronavirus, 3,605 have died.

Mrsappleby · 03/04/2020 14:10

Oh my, we're way past Italy now then

babychange12 · 03/04/2020 14:11

Re Singapore governments action

The government is also changing its advice on masks and will no longer discourage citizens from wearing them, given growing research that people with no symptoms could transmit the virus. The government will give out reusable masks to every household.

Somehow I don't think our government will be giving us face masks Sad

babychange12 · 03/04/2020 14:11

How many deaths was that then in the last 24 hrs?

HeIenaDove · 03/04/2020 14:11

YY @RedToothBrush re. fireworks. And im sure what the NHS does NOT need right now is admissions to the burns unit.

Eeyoresstickhouse · 03/04/2020 14:12

684 deaths. Just heartbreaking.

HeIenaDove · 03/04/2020 14:24

This Government didnt even want tenants to have a spare bedroom let alone a spare bathroom

CharlieTangoBanana · 03/04/2020 14:36

This puts us way ahead of Italy on the equivalent day and I keep hearing politicians saying we're going to peak next week.

They clearly have staffing issues at Excel as they were originally going to take patients from Tuesday this week, then by Thursday and now they're saying the middle of next week.
