@Yamayo unaccounted for nursing home deaths that have been added en masse today I believe

Yamayo · 02/04/2020 23:07

So I've been told by French relatives the reason the figure is so high today is that they have added deaths in old people's homes that they hadn't previously...

Coronavirus news – live: UK immunity certificate plan would be ‘dangerous’, government warned as world passes 1m confirmed cases

Immunity certificates for people who have recovered from coronavirus would be “dangerous” and give people a “sense of false security”, a health expert has warned, after health secretary Matt Hancock suggested the documents could allow people to get back to normal life as soon as possible.

Eleanor Riley, a professor of immunology and infectious disease at the University of Edinburgh, said scientists did not know yet if people with antibodies for Covid-19 were immune to the virus.

Article also says:

the US recorded the highest daily death toll from the virus in the world, with 1,169 fatalities. France announced a further 1,355 Covid-19 deaths on Thursday, although almost 900 of these were from new figures on deaths in care homes since the outbreak began

MarshaBradyo · 03/04/2020 08:24

Matt Hancock R4 - we’ve tested 15 antibody tests and none work well enough yet for use

BeyondMymymymyCorona · 03/04/2020 08:32

All the tests prove is that antibodies are there, that's no evidence at all of how long they last! Surely any data they have atm proves they last four months at the absolute longest, as no one has had them any longer than that?!

RedToothBrush · 03/04/2020 08:33

Paul Brand @paulbranditv
Matt Hancock says having #covid19 was particularly worrying “on the way down” and symptoms were like having “glass in your throat”.

Interestingly he’s also still social distancing because science still isn’t clear on immunity once you’ve had it.

@BBCr4today

Health Secretary again floats the idea of “immunity certificates” for those who have had the virus.

So plan is for immunity certificate but the health minister does not fully trust the idea with his own life cos it has no scientific proof that it works.

Gotcha.

So those people getting immunity certificates are guinea pigs in a trial which will be led by health care professionals (who will not be representative of the general population anyway as they will be exposed to an abnormally high viral load).

Right I'm on board with this fool proof plan.

I know we have not got an alternative but aren't you just filled with optimism and talk of green shoots so feel all fuzzy and nice this morning.

Don't get me started on clap for key workers. People I know making the most noise on social media about it, are without exception the ones flouting the rules. Virtue signalling nonsense to make people feel better (and has fuck all to do with supporting NHS or any other staff). Practice what you bloody preach.

pocketem · 03/04/2020 08:39

Don't know if it's been linked already but this is a really useful resource from Google for stat lovers. Google uses their maps and phone data to show how much people's movements have reduced across a range of settings including retail, parks, transport stations, groceries and pharmacies etc. Data is broken down by country and then by council area for the UK.

You can see which parts of the country are obeying the lockdown and which seem to be flaunting it

Compared to Spain we are doing badly at sticking to lockdown

Remember though red - their "clap for key workers" only counts if they film themselves and the DCs doing it and post it on Facebook, snapchat, Instagram, Twitter and tiktok... Wink

Somelady · 03/04/2020 08:45

The case of the Iceland man infected with two viral strains. Who knows if he picked up the second or if it just mutated in him.
Also the cases of persistent infection. There will have been some antibodies while the infection disappears then shows symptoms again. These people could be infectious the whole time. It is not a normal corona virus we should remain cautious till we have confidence through research

Ladyellow · 03/04/2020 08:47

@MarshaBradyo what a nightmare! I really don’t know how this problem can be solved. I can’t see this level of lockdown being viable for 6 months, a year or longer. There’s no way most families could financially survive and the government won’t be able to extend the financial support beyond 3 months I imagine? Children missing a year of school? But on the other hand the risk is dying or people you love dying? How can that choice be made?!

CrunchyCarrot · 03/04/2020 08:48

Health Secretary again floats the idea of “immunity certificates” for those who have had the virus.

Another red herring and a waste of resources, imo. If coronavirus turns out to mutate regularly like the 'flu, then any certificate won't be valid for very long, will it. Much more research is needed, oh and actual TESTING.

MarshaBradyo · 03/04/2020 08:49

I know Lady

It’s impossible

My first ‘cant’ would be we can’t lock down until vaccine.

What can you do next is not much without antibody except shielding again. But going through a second peak is going to be tough

Plus getting people to lift them comply a nightmare

MarshaBradyo · 03/04/2020 08:50

Matt Hancock did say other corona virus shortest mutation was a year? (Maybe two can’t recall) so they are considering what they know but not fool proof obviously

CrunchyCarrot · 03/04/2020 09:00

Haven't heard that one, even so a year isn't very long, that would be like 'flu strains, so there'd need to be a new vaccine every year to cover it. They'll end up bunging it in with the annual 'flu jab, in that case. But right now, of course, there's nothing.

I don't know how long the current 'lockdown' situation can carry on for without doing more and more damage.

Somelady · 03/04/2020 09:01

I have faith in medicine, the problem is it not very available to the less privileged. There's doctors saying there may be a third mutation so far

MarshaBradyo · 03/04/2020 09:02

It was on R4 this morning. Will see if the one / two thing reappears online.

A year would be great as we could get to the vaccine release.

MarshaBradyo · 03/04/2020 09:03

Although doesn’t overcome issue if this particular virus behaving differently for some reason
