Thanks for the new thread. Daily figures not out yet which always makes me stressed

AliciaWhiskers · 30/03/2020 14:33

Thanks for the thread

TheGlaikitRambler · 30/03/2020 14:45

Scotland's numbers are out, 6 deaths and 179 new cases.

mrshoho · 30/03/2020 14:48

Today's press conference will be at 5pm taken by the Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab .

Thanks for new thread.

Checking in!

WhyNotMe40 · 30/03/2020 14:53

Can someone explain to me a non-conspiracy theory explanation for why the official figures do not represent the numbers given by the hospitals and trusts?
I am finding this very concerning!

Somelady · 30/03/2020 14:57

It's because some scientists have been smashing protons to create another dimension in which these fatalities are people who had not already been confirmed to have the disease WhyNotMe40

BentBastard · 30/03/2020 15:01

Why, I don't know for sure but hospitals are utterly swamped and their top priority is patient care. Personally I don't find it at all shocking that some reporting is a little behind.

They're all running around and knackered and there aren't nearly enough of them sometimes filling out the paperwork might need to wait.

SistemaAddict · 30/03/2020 15:02

Thank you for the new thread.

If you look at historic breakdowns of positive cases and death stats by region/area, there is always a large number reported in the "unallocated" category. Here is an example (sorry, it is Daily Mail):

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8156339/UKs-coronavirus-death-toll-jumps-474.html

Out of 578 deaths a few days ago, 101 (17%) gets reported as unallocated. Assume these are the most recent cases and the geographical breakdowns get updated one or two days later.

SistemaAddict · 30/03/2020 15:09

@ofwarren how are you doing today? I hope you are feeling better Thanks

AvocadoOwl · 30/03/2020 15:09

I have no idea re the death figures. People are quick to mistrust the government but personally I don't see what they have to gain from knowingly and deliberately orchestrating a cover up- it's obvious that the truth would come out and the resulting lack of trust would be an enormous problem for them. It would be an incredibly short sighted thing to do and I don't think they are that stupid (others disagree, I know).

Harries mentioned a lag of one day re death figures yesterday so I suspect that could potentially account for a fair proportion given the big increase this week. I guess with the numbers increasing there must be a huge amount of work to be done ascertaining whether deaths should be attributed to the virus (and therefore be included in the figures) or not? If an 80 year old with advanced lung cancer contracts CV and dies then does he go down as a CV death or not, for example? I would imagine it's not always straightforward, particularly when a lot of those dying have comorbidities.

AvocadoOwl · 30/03/2020 15:10

Agree with @BentBastard's point too.

TheGlaikitRambler · 30/03/2020 15:12

From the Guardian blog -

The number of people who have died in England after contracting coronavirus now stands at 1,284 – a rise of 159 from yesterday – NHS England has said.

The patients were aged between 32 and 98 years old and all but four, aged between 56 and 87 years old, had underlying health conditions, according to the PA news agency.

ThankyouPeter · 30/03/2020 15:13

Sky news are reporting 159 new deaths in England today. No idea why they get it before anyone elseHmm

defthand · 30/03/2020 15:13

BREAKING: England death toll increases by 159
A further 159 people, who tested positive for the coronavirus have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in England to 1,284, NHS England have said.

The patients were aged between 32 and 98 years old and all but 4 patients (aged between 56 and 87 years old) had underlying health conditions.

ofwarren · 30/03/2020 15:13

I'm ok @bercows thanks
I spoke to my mum on the phone earlier which triggered the breathlessness again which is annoying.
I got a pulse oximeter today though and my oxygen is 99-100% but my heart rate jumps up when I talk.
My 4 year doesn't understand at all and is saying "I can't hear you mummy" when I'm trying to rest my voice.
Other than that, I only really have the burning back and chest heavy sensation.
How are you today?

defthand · 30/03/2020 15:14

I think it’s time they dropped this “underlying illnesses” guff.

woodencoffeetable · 30/03/2020 15:18

the netherlands have announced that their measures will be extended. until when will be announced in a press conference tomorrow.
the numbers in nl are dire, considering it's a tiny county.

ShastaBeast · 30/03/2020 15:20

I presume there’s a press release that goes out before they get round to updating the website.

defthand · 30/03/2020 15:23

Total new deaths today in the U.K. is 180 (+14 in Wales, +6 in Scotland, +1 in NI).

Two days of decline. Interesting, because you’d think it’s still too early for the lockdown to have impacted deaths due to lag. Maybe a product of many people preempting the gov measures? Or just an anomaly — perhaps gov record keeping lagging over the weekend.

Pishposhpashy · 30/03/2020 15:24

Why is it guff? They are underlying illnesses.

defthand · 30/03/2020 15:29

It’s guff because 40% of the population have at least one underlying condition, and most are relatively benign. It’s guff because 95% of people over 70 have some underlying condition. It’s guff because clearly younger, healthy people are dying of this now and they’re having to say things like “except these X number of people with underlying conditions.” It’s guff because 44% of people in the ICU are aged 16-59, according to their own statistics. Many of these people will die, it just takes longer because they’re younger. It’s guff because no other country is trying to pretend this only affects the exceptionally frail. It’s guff because these people are PEOPLE, and this continued way of describing them makes it sound like they don’t effing well count.
