Actually psoriasis is pretty known for totally cocking up your immune system and is also a side effect of other more serious conditions such as liver disease

And depending on how severe the condition he could have been on some drugs which would put someone in the extremely vulnerable category.

AvocadoOwl · 30/03/2020 16:57

Yesterday the news reported a victim’s “underlying illness” as psoriasis. A 15yo with a bit of flaky skin died because he had an “underlying illness”. It’s ridiculous, and as pp said it’s a method of Othering the victims so people don’t panic.

Wow, this shows a huge lack of understanding.

A close relative of mine suffers from severe psoriasis and falls under the 'shielded' category despite being young. His psoriasis and associated significant immune issues are controlled by some hefty and expensive drugs which sadly still leave him immune compromised in a different way as a side effect.

'A bit of flaky skin' indeed. Please actually educate yourself before you make such flippant remarks.

IrisAtwood · 30/03/2020 16:58

@Petiolaris She didn’t die from psoriasis, she died from Covid-19. Psoriasis can be very severe. I know someone who is often on oral steroids and has taken immunosuppressants to try and get her condition under control.

Using the tab at the top, we are close to the top regarding deaths although Italy and France figures are outstanding.

Crunchy you need to line up the figures from when both countries had 10 deaths. So today, is 1441 vs 1408

Janemarpling · 30/03/2020 17:04

psoriasis is not just 'a bit of flaky skin'
it is a serious autoimmune condition that and patients with severe forms are often on immunsupressing medication.

I have it. Had it bad as a child. Rarely get it now. Now I feel panicked after reading that though. Must be ok as its not on the current list.🥶

Hellswithbigbells · 30/03/2020 17:04

@Pishposhpashy well said! I too have noticed that a few of the ‘no underlying conditions’ deaths that have been reported have been of people who are potentially in a morbidly obese category. Whilst any death is so very sad why is this not being recognised?

SansaSnark · 30/03/2020 17:04

I'm not sure sorting by total deaths is helpful- remember some countries have much smaller populations than us. Searching by deaths per million is interesting- we are still high but gives more perspective.

Somelady · 30/03/2020 17:05

How is psoriasis a serious condition it is flaky skin. Think what pp is saying is that it is not unusual to have high blood sugar hypertension asthma etc etc and these are not serious and don't usually kill

SansaSnark · 30/03/2020 17:07

I think there is some awareness that obesity makes you less likely to have a good outcome- however, this isn't usually considered a health condition as such.

I think there is a middle ground which shows clearly some young(ish) healthy people have died from this, but you are more likely to die if you have pre-existing health conditions, are obese or are older. But sometimes the reporting makes it sound like these people don't count, which I think is what people are reacting to.

Janemarpling · 30/03/2020 17:08

It hadn't crossed my mind until now about psoriasis.

I think its more due to the drugs you are in. I just have steroid cream. If I died and they said that was my condition. My family would be angry. I guess it depends how severe the boy had it.

Are you a medical professional?

I am telling you psoriasis is not flaky skin, it can be very serious and more to the point the medication people who have it are often put on suppresses their immune system. How is that hard to understand?

High blood pressure frequently kills. Heart attacks. Strokes. It makes you vulnerable.

Asthma also kills. Rarely, but it does. Personally, I know two people who died from asthma attacks and it stands to reason that if you suffer a respiratory condition then an illness which attacks your lungs is going to potentially be very serious for you. Hence I have been isolating my asthmatic child for weeks now.

Laniakea · 30/03/2020 17:09

psoriasis is often treated by immune modulators/biologics ... which will utterly fuck up your immune system (& can have some fairly horrendous side effects including increased risk of certain cancers) ... use of these meds puts you in an extremely vulnerable group. It is not just a bit of flakey skin.

Somelady · 30/03/2020 17:10

What is serious about an immune system making the scalp flaky

TheCanterburyWhales · 30/03/2020 17:10

That's the Italian article I just mentioned, it also has a table for when each region should be clear. I couldn't see a "in English" button, sorry!

Italy's death figures are awful today but infection is lower as you'd expect nearing peak.

THE. MEDICATION. SUPPRESSES. YOUR. IMMUNE. SYSTEM.

Christ alive.

Laniakea · 30/03/2020 17:13

the picture all of them were clearly extremely obese

Someone who is clearly morbidly obese should never be described as fit and healthy nor as having no underlying health conditions.

defthand · 30/03/2020 17:14

Very good signs from Italy, but it seems they only tested half as many people as usual in Lombardy.

Still, definitely heading in the right direction at last. Lockdown works.

Pishposhpashy · 30/03/2020 17:14

Well quite Laniakea.

Somelady · 30/03/2020 17:15

If I die i die and they say it would have been milder if my heart didn't beat so fast

SansaSnark · 30/03/2020 17:17

Raab on now.

defthand · 30/03/2020 17:18

Anyone hear what happened to the much touted antigen and antibody tests? I thought the gov said they’d be using these to start testing NHS staff over the weekend, but the pics I’m seeing from that appear to be the standard swab tests?
