Could this be the end of the Royal family?

I don't mean if they die of the virus...

But there's nothing like a lockdown to really highlight inequality. I saw an article yesterday about Kate + William "isolating" at Anmer Hall, having done a photoshoot where they pretend to be on the telephone and writing ("working").

I think if people are going to have to spend months at home, in small flats with kids, still going out to work or trying to WFH, queueing for supermarkets with empty shelves......that could definitely breed some discontent. Or if people catch it and have to be treated in makeshift hospitals, not getting an ambulance until they're struggling to breathe, while the RF can be whisked away to a private hospital for treatment. I've already seen a lot of comments along the lines of "why don't they offer up their many palaces to be used as hospitals, rather than doing newspaper articles".

Opinions?

Granted, I’m just saying that your assumption was wrong. Obviously we aren’t taking the piss etc as we are on benefits because we have to be.

Clavinova · 03/04/2020 09:30

I can’t believe people are reporting on them ‘making a phone call’ to NHS workers. What a pathetic gesture. I’m sure the workers in question would have preferred to have enjoyed their brief break in peace.

I wouldn't bank on it!

"Accident and emergency nurse Brogan Bishop, who only qualified two months ago, was jumping up and down with excitement after speaking to the royal couple."

“We’ve been really busy. It’s stressful,” she said, before adding: “I can’t wait to go back and tell my colleagues how wonderful they think we are.”

MsTSwift · 03/04/2020 09:33

I don’t think you can really compare being on benefits with the funds the royals receive from the public purse - that’s just silly. Also do you insist that everyone else is your subject?

LaurieMarlow · 03/04/2020 09:49

I’ve no issue with people being on benefits. It’s important that people have a safety net in tough times.

That’s not in anyway comparable in my eyes to paying for one unremarkable family to live in luxury at our expense while we’re expected to kow tow to them.

This might be slightly easier to stomach if they at least got up off their arses to lead the nation in a time of crisis (isn’t that what they’re there for?) but William’s lack of interest in doing this is what sticks in the craw.

How very strange ... but then they seem to affect some people that way

Each to their own

Wolfgirrl · 03/04/2020 10:01

One persons 'excitement' at the phone call doesnt justify their positions.

The media were hardly going to write 'after the phone call, one nurse commented how they wouldn't last 5 minutes on the ward' or whatever, it is their job to make out everyone loves them (like overhyping how many attended H&M's wedding).

And it is as I guessed, another pathetic PR gesture.

Peregrina · 03/04/2020 10:06

I expect the 'wouldn't last five minutes' is the more typical response.

How many quotes do you want?

"Emily Johnson, a hospital spokeswoman said it had boosted morale, adding: “It genuinely felt like they shared in our grief.”

^"Dr Devers said of the call: “It was a great opportunity to reflect. It really refuelled us.”*

"Alice Bloxham, a sister on Queen’s Hospital Burton’s Covid-19 cohort ward, said: "It was a pleasure to talk to The Duke and Duchess and to be able to explain some of the challenges we face for our patients. Everyone at the hospital appreciates the support they gave us on the call.”

"Donna Marie McGroarty, Infectious Diseases Charge Nurse, from University Hospital Monklands said: “We were so honoured to receive a call from Their Royal Highnesses."

"It has been a tough time for all our staff. However, the support we have received from colleagues and the community has been overwhelming. The telephone call from The Duke and Duchess was totally unexpected and a real morale boost."

There are a few more. Grin

When someone takes a call from the Duke and Duchess they aren't going to say Piss off, are they? They will remember their manners and stutter something appropriate.

Noodlenose - They have one nanny. Don't believe everything you read.

Mamamia456 · 03/04/2020 10:48

Wolfgirrl - You would be able to say that about any person not trained medically. I wouldn't last five minutes on a ward having no medical training. What a ridiculous thing to say.

Heygirlheyboy · 03/04/2020 10:58

Apparently these calls are on the court circular, does that mean they're listing them as 'work'? What a joke.

LaurieMarlow · 03/04/2020 11:00

Well what else are they doing? If they don’t list the calls, they’d have nothing to say.

Heygirlheyboy · 03/04/2020 11:04

Listing them looks even worse imo Laurie (Love LaraM!)

Mamamia456 · 03/04/2020 11:07

Peregrina - Maybe you should have read the article, then you would have seen what a load of nonsense it is. It is just a "royal expert's" opinion.

Peregrina · 03/04/2020 11:12

It was in the Daily Express. I knew it would be tosh, so thanks for confirming it.

The points we are discussing still stand - they have all cleared off to second homes, when even Charles, the Queen and the DofE had perfectly good first homes to isolate themselves in. Then we don't know what Kate and Wills are actually doing, apart from posing for the cameras, every now and again.

TheSandman · 03/04/2020 11:32

Story my dad used to tell:

Rome 1960/1 My father was studying art at the British School in Rome when The Queen and the PoE came for a visit. During the tour the DofE expressed surprise that all the students were sculptors. The person showing them round was almost certainly Anthony Blunt.
"Don't you have any painters? asked the Duke.
"We have one..." said Sir Anthony
The painter's studio door was closed. And dutifully knocked on.
"Who is it?!"
"The Duke of Edinburgh would like to see your studio."
"Tell him to fuck off!"

Puzzledandpissedoff · 03/04/2020 11:47

Apparently these calls are on the court circular

If you think about it that's actually quite useful, illustrating exactly what they're prepared to pass on as "work done" ... a useful one to bear in mind for the future

audreysview · 03/04/2020 11:50

Do we all believe Charles is really ill though. How do we know it’s not a lie to justify him hiding away and absconding from any duties. Why should we believe everything they tell us. What better excuse for hiding away than to tell us he tested positive, but very conveniently....he only has it mild. Hmm

Heygirlheyboy · 03/04/2020 11:52

True Puzzled.

For the benefit of the media probably - listed under Media Centre;

"Royal Communications is responsible for making arrangements for members of the media to cover Royal visits, events and news stories so that they can provide accurate, timely and informative coverage to their audiences."

Puzzledandpissedoff · 03/04/2020 12:00

TheSandman I see your painter and raise you the story of the Brazilian general with a chestful of medals who Philip met in a line up of local worthies

Philip: Good god, so many medals - I didn't realise Brazil was in the war that long
General: At least, sir, I didn't get them for marrying my wife

Mamamia456 · 03/04/2020 12:01

audreysview - What a vitriolic post - would it make you feel better if he had died! Can't believe some of the nasty comments on this thread.
