Could this be the end of the Royal family?

I don't mean if they die of the virus...

But there's nothing like a lockdown to really highlight inequality. I saw an article yesterday about Kate + William "isolating" at Anmer Hall, having done a photoshoot where they pretend to be on the telephone and writing ("working").

I think if people are going to have to spend months at home, in small flats with kids, still going out to work or trying to WFH, queueing for supermarkets with empty shelves......that could definitely breed some discontent. Or if people catch it and have to be treated in makeshift hospitals, not getting an ambulance until they're struggling to breathe, while the RF can be whisked away to a private hospital for treatment. I've already seen a lot of comments along the lines of "why don't they offer up their many palaces to be used as hospitals, rather than doing newspaper articles".

Opinions?

Party pieces /kerching! And I other news police in Surrey are checking people’s shopping bag to check they are not buying anything unnecessary!

Peregrina · 31/03/2020 16:34

Er you think what you think Clavinova.

Clavinova · 31/03/2020 16:35

Not even candles for a cake? How do you tell an 8 year old their birthday is unnecessary?

Her brother's essential helium balloon delivery service is also open.

A message from Boomf
Updated March 30th 2020

From everyone here at Boomf we wanted to thank you for all the positivity, support and encouragement over the last week.

We are continuing to post orders daily. All orders leave our factory at the same high standard, safely and within 48 hours of being ordered (monday to friday). We’ll continue to offer this service for as long as we are allowed to, as encouraged by the Government for online businesses and most importantly, that it is safe for us to do so.

Following Government advice
We are a small, close team and keeping each other safe, positive and healthy as we remain operational is our priority. In the factory we are following very strict health and hygiene protocols to ensure our hard working and brilliant staff stay well and healthy.

Our Operations team have amazed all of us in how they’ve adapted to making huge changes in the production day to day. We are maintaining a core group of production superstars, working more than 2 metres apart, on two different floor levels, extremely stringent cleaning, regular breaks for hand washing and simply some much needed headspace. In this ever changing situation we have experienced a few inevitable delays, so thank you for bearing with us.

Our delivery partners, Royal Mail and DPD, are also following government guidelines to keep everyone safe and well. This means all our deliveries are contactless; our cards and gifts are posted through letterboxes and those that can’t are left on doorsteps to ensure every delivery minimises any contact.

Thank you

Sharing laughter and sending surprises to those we care about, are the foundations Boomf was built on. However, it’s your videos, messages and encouraging feedback that uplifts us all daily. This positive drumbeat is what built the Boomf brand. To be able to make people laugh out loud, fall off a chair and jump with joy, is a wonderful thing to be part of. We’ll keep sharing these wonderful moments on all our social channels - but thank you for making us smile too.

If you have any questions please contact our team at [email protected].

Part of the problem in London in particular is that 60% of rough sleepers are not UK citizens - many of them having 'no recourse to public funds.' - i.e. the British taxpayer doesn't fund them - can we send the EU rough sleepers to Versailles?

What about the other 40% @Clavinova ?

YogaLite · 31/03/2020 16:38

Thee are always winners and losers in the crisis, Party Pieces clearly nailed it.

Wolfgirrl · 31/03/2020 16:38

I also believe there will be a lot of people fleeing domestic abuse in their locked down homes. How about using the palace as a temporary refuge?

Clavinova · 31/03/2020 16:56

Wolfgirrl
What's wrong with a Premier Inn?

I'd prefer to have my own room, a comfy bed, private shower, internet signal and TV. Who wants draughty corridors, lumpy beds, shared bathroom, shared TV room..?

Wolfgirrl · 31/03/2020 17:10

@clavinova

If conditions are that bad at Buckingham Palace, why do they make their staff live in them?

Clavinova · 31/03/2020 17:15

why do they make their staff live in them?

Have they evicted the staff due to coronavirus? I assumed they lived there all year round - I thought you meant to cram several thousand homeless people in all the rooms available?

GrimDamnFanjo · 31/03/2020 17:20

Reading "and what do you do?" By Norman Baker really opened my eyes about the extent of the Royal Family's cost to us.

Wolfgirrl · 31/03/2020 17:21

@clavinova

I heard the queen was operating with a 'skeleton staff'at Windsor Castle at the moment. Presumably the others are at home unless shes locked them in BP?

When did I say several thousand?

And you didnt answer my question - if the conditions at BP are so bad, why are they happy for their staff to stay there?

TheSandman · 31/03/2020 17:23

All you who are moaning about the RF not doing anything - what are you actually doing?

My wife is an NHS worker - doing stupidly long hours - making her life as stress free and easy as possible. Twice a day checking two areas of my village assigned to me as part of our Village's Resilience Group's helpline system. Making sure my 80 year old mum who also lives in the village is supplied with the necessaries. Keeping my 3 kids indoors and entertained/educated.

Not poncing about photo opping and sending 'thoughts'.

Clavinova · 31/03/2020 17:46

And you didn't answer my question - if the conditions at BP are so bad, why are they happy for their staff to stay there?

I did answer - I assumed the staff would be staying in their own rooms and the rough sleepers spread about in 'other rooms.' Well, if the staff don't mind going back to bedrooms slept in by rough sleepers then I guess it's OK - perhaps you think they should just put up with it. I wouldn't be keen myself.

Wolfgirrl · 31/03/2020 17:49

@clavinova

Or victims of domestic abuse?

The thing is, if the palace announced tomorrow they were going to utilise their empty mansions as hospitals/hostels etc, you would say it was wonderful and they are amazing people.

So basically you will blindly defend them no matter what they do.

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 31/03/2020 17:59

So basically you will blindly defend them no matter what they do.

And some people will blindly criticise them no matter what they do.

Clavinova · 31/03/2020 18:06

Or victims of domestic abuse?

Do staff live with their children in royal residences - I've no idea? Probably not - perhaps the staff quarters wouldn't be suitable for families?

The thing is, if the palace announced tomorrow they were going to utilise their empty mansions as hospitals/hostels etc, you would say it was wonderful and they are amazing people.

No I wouldn't - I think it's a silly idea - the ExCeL/hospital, Premier Inn/hostel are much more practical.

TheSandman · 31/03/2020 18:11

And some people will blindly criticise them no matter what they do.

But they're not doing anything!

vera99 · 31/03/2020 18:13

How they treated Backstairs Billy tells me all I need to know about them. Kate and her family know their places.

MsTSwift · 31/03/2020 18:14

To be fair to the critics they are an open goal. Prince Andrew say no more.

Wolfgirrl · 31/03/2020 18:18

@MonkeyToesOfDoom

How am I blindly criticising them? The things I say are supported by fact. The only defences for them ate speculation; 'oh they might be doing things behind the scenes' 'oh the palace might be unsuitable' 'oh william cant go back to his pilot job as he might need retraining'.

Wolfgirrl · 31/03/2020 18:21

@MsTSwift

I have tried not to focus on the scandals etc a d only on the facts; I feel like once I get started on the scandal/undemocratic side of things I will never stop!

I've been trying to focus on debunking the myth that they work hard, care about the public and are worth the money that is spent on them. Every fact points to the opposite. I'm always happy to be proved wrong, but the royalists always fall back on insulting republicans or drawing bizarre comparisons with footballers, etc.

audreysview · 31/03/2020 18:27

The Queen did 295 official visits in 2019. She’s bloody 93. At 93 my gran struggled to get to Tesco once a week, and she was in really good health!

Most women are worn out at that age. There’s no comparison. The queen is very well looked after, a life time of luxury, private physicians, servants, cooks, chauffeurs etc. Not a single money worry. I think about how hard working my mum (the same age) was for little reward. ....... I don’t admire the queen for grimly hanging on when she knows her sons waiting to do the job he’s been waiting for.

MsTSwift · 31/03/2020 18:28

I agree totally but the Andrew scandal just reminded me how annoying the whole concept is. All he had to do was be a vaguely decent person in return for all those privileges and he couldn’t even do that. Absolutely pathetic.

CathyorClaire · 31/03/2020 18:30

How they treated Backstairs Billy tells me all I need to know about them

Not just Backstairs Billy. Harry and Meghan fired their BP staff just this year and Saint Diana wasn't averse to to getting rid of those who displeased her. The royals have always hired and fired at will.

And some people will blindly criticise them no matter what they do

The criticisms are based on established fact, not blind.
