Could this be the end of the Royal family?

I don't mean if they die of the virus...

But there's nothing like a lockdown to really highlight inequality. I saw an article yesterday about Kate + William "isolating" at Anmer Hall, having done a photoshoot where they pretend to be on the telephone and writing ("working").

I think if people are going to have to spend months at home, in small flats with kids, still going out to work or trying to WFH, queueing for supermarkets with empty shelves......that could definitely breed some discontent. Or if people catch it and have to be treated in makeshift hospitals, not getting an ambulance until they're struggling to breathe, while the RF can be whisked away to a private hospital for treatment. I've already seen a lot of comments along the lines of "why don't they offer up their many palaces to be used as hospitals, rather than doing newspaper articles".

Opinions?

I’d love to see these “bad conditions” at Buckingham Palace”. Heads of state stay there, it’ll be luxurious. What a poor excuse, saying it’s not suitable.

CathyorClaire · 31/03/2020 18:38

The Queen did 295 official visits in 2019. She’s bloody 93. At 93 my gran struggled to get to Tesco once a week, and she was in really good health!

The royals haven't had to work in manual jobs, take public transport to and from said jobs, wait for rationed ops. They have access to the best medical specialists in the world, the best education in the world. They don't have to worry about their children's futures however dim or shady they turn out to be. Even Margaret wore out early through relentless partying rather than hard work.

It's really no coincidence they 'work' forever.

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 31/03/2020 18:49

The Queen did 295 official visits in 2019

Official visit = chauffeur driven car to location, smile, wave, ask inane questions, chauffeur driven back - oh and the obligatory smile and take flowers from random young child.

That's not work.

HappyHammy · 31/03/2020 18:49

93 yo is a good age but I doubt she has to do much for herself.

Bunnyfuller · 31/03/2020 18:59

I sincerely hope they have the decency to step back once this queen dies. It is obscene, archaic and morally bereft. Blood sucking parasites.

Pathetic - they do so MUCH - private pampered travel, never lifting a finger and walking around for 10 minutes. WTF. I mean who the fuck can call that fucking work?! Absolute bollocks.
@clarinova is a rabid Brexiter too - she prefers her economic subjugation to be home grown. Well, inasmuch as they’re not British heritage. But whatevs.

vera99 · 31/03/2020 19:09

Nothing, like we are in it, together crisis to let the people know the venality of their superiors. Corbyn will look like a Tory when we are finished with this shit.

BeijingBikini · 31/03/2020 19:25

What "work" do they do exactly? Cutting some tape at the opening of a new building? Visiting someone's workplace in a £2000 dress and posing for some photos? Sign me up please!

I know what an utter doss. I would be far better at it than Kate. When can I have my turn?!

larrygrylls · 31/03/2020 19:36

Why so resentful of the royal family compared to wealthy hedge fund managers (say)? They have the same amenities at their disposal minus the obligations to the general public. And most of their money is made by, effectively, taxing people’s pensions.

The Royal Family are not that wealthy among the super rich and they have to live their lives in public in return.

MangoFeverDream · 31/03/2020 19:37

I would be far better at it than Kate. When can I have my turn?!

But you’d have to be married to Prince William which would turn a lot of people off tbf

Clavinova · 31/03/2020 19:59

The royals haven't had to work in manual jobs

Prince Andrew served in the Falklands War, Harry served in Afghanistan (and yes, he did kill some Taliban insurgents), Prince Charles served in the navy for about 5 years - do you know any plumbers who want to sign up?

Mamamia456 · 31/03/2020 20:07

Leighhalfpenny - Do you even know who the Queen is? Go and actually educate yourself on her duties.

Mamamia456 · 31/03/2020 20:09

Bunny fuller - The same applies to you.

I'm sure this thread has been taken over by bored teenagers.

audreysview · 31/03/2020 20:15

The Royal Family are not that wealthy among the super rich and they have to live their lives in public in return.

The queens worth £3 BILLION......and none of it earned...it doesn’t matter that they have to live their lives in public. That’s not the point. They’re an unnecessary burden on the tsxpayer. It’s so bloody wrong to have an unelected Queen/king.

MsTSwift · 31/03/2020 20:19

The queen is the richest woman in England. And is tax payer funded unlike bankers (though maybe arguable after bail outs). Also bankers don’t require the rest of us to be their “subjects”

Mamamia456 · 31/03/2020 20:26

Audreysview - Where have you got that figure from?

Clavinova · 31/03/2020 20:26

What "work" do they do exactly?

"CAF [Charities Aid Foundation] research shows that these royal patronages can be vital for charities, with one in eight people saying that the patronage of a member of the royal family makes us more inclined to give money to a charity."

"If you add that to our research from 2012 which showed that charities of which the Queen is patron raised more than £1.4 billion every year, it becomes clear that having a royal name atop one’s charity is a big deal."

"The royals are afforded both a platform and an audience simply because of who they are. We cannot underestimate the impact that has when they use that platform to promote charities. All of a sudden a charity can find itself on the BBC, the Daily Mail, plastered across Twitter–attention that it may not have been able to garner by itself."

We might laugh at Prince Charles but he's clearly got a lot of ideas - you can't say he's lazy;

"The Prince of Wales, who founded the Prince’s Trust more than 40 years ago, has dedicated much of his life to supporting charitable organisations. The Trust alone has helped over 825,000 young people across the UK since its inception, and quite easily raises upwards of £60 million every year to keep it running."

The queen is the richest woman in England

She’s not even part of the richest 250, her £300 million is peanuts on The Times rich list.

Wolfgirrl · 31/03/2020 20:29

@Clavinova

Prince Andrew served in the Falklands War, Harry served in Afghanistan (and yes, he did kill some Taliban insurgents), Prince Charles served in the navy for about 5 years - do you know any plumbers who want to sign up?

God, 5 years! What a grafter. Does everyone that serve in the armed forces get to quit after 5 years and live as a multimillionaire off the taxpayer?

Same goes for Harry and Wills. It's a pattern, do a few years so royalists (like you) can point to it whenever people say they are lazy.

I really wouldn't bring Andrew up to make any kind of pro-royal point at the moment, unless you want to address recent events?

Clavinova · 31/03/2020 20:30

clarinova is a rabid Brexiter too - she prefers her economic subjugation to be home grown

My grandparents are French.

Wolfgirrl · 31/03/2020 20:30

@Alsohuman

Back to the false comparisons...

And it's only when discussing royals 300 million is seen as 'peanuts'.

Wolfgirrl · 31/03/2020 20:32

My grandparents are French.

So?

Clavinova · 31/03/2020 20:32

royalists (like you)

If I'm a royalist you turned me into one - I like a good debate. Grin

CathyorClaire · 31/03/2020 20:33

Prince Andrew served in the Falklands War, Harry served in Afghanistan (and yes, he did kill some Taliban insurgents), Prince Charles served in the navy for about 5 years

None of them were squaddies. And Harry distastefully referred to killing as being 'like playing a video game'.

Alsohuman · 31/03/2020 20:33

And it's only when discussing royals 300 million is seen as 'peanuts’

Check for yourself. Top’s £22 billion.
