Could this be the end of the Royal family?

I don't mean if they die of the virus...

But there's nothing like a lockdown to really highlight inequality. I saw an article yesterday about Kate + William "isolating" at Anmer Hall, having done a photoshoot where they pretend to be on the telephone and writing ("working").

I think if people are going to have to spend months at home, in small flats with kids, still going out to work or trying to WFH, queueing for supermarkets with empty shelves......that could definitely breed some discontent. Or if people catch it and have to be treated in makeshift hospitals, not getting an ambulance until they're struggling to breathe, while the RF can be whisked away to a private hospital for treatment. I've already seen a lot of comments along the lines of "why don't they offer up their many palaces to be used as hospitals, rather than doing newspaper articles".

Opinions?

Wolfgirrl - Hostels and hotels would be much better for NHS workers and the homeless.

Clavinova · 31/03/2020 15:15

Why are we paying millions to people who are a hindrance in a crisis.

You need to tell that to the Daily Express - their headlines don't fit your narrative;

"Government demands ALL homeless people be housed after Prince William issues appeal."

YogaLite · 31/03/2020 15:22

Haha, an appeal for government to shell out more, how about some cash Wills??

Let's not forget we had times when interest rates were around ~15%, I feel they are coming back, who do u think it's going to pay for what government is currently paying to businesses and individuals?

TheGirlFromStoryville · 31/03/2020 15:41

Could the homeless not be housed in some of the many properties the Royals own?

MintyMabel · 31/03/2020 15:44

Like I said before, the royals do a 'proper' job for a couple of years so when the public question their work ethic the royalists can say, 'oh but they did that job'.

Both wanted to continue. Harry in particular spoke often about how he would have rather stayed on active duty. Prince Phillip was devastated to give up his naval career. Prince Andrew was in the Navy from 1979 to 1996, including serving in the Falklands war, incidentally alongside my father on HMS Invincible, where he was very much part of the operational team. Edward - well he didn’t even pretend. Princess Anne was part of the british eventing team and by all accounts is the hardest working Royal despite not ever having had a “real job” I’ve lost count of the number of times she’s been up here in some official capacity, and despite having a royal palace she can stay at, she refuses to do so and instead stays somewhere rather less palatial where she is amongst friends.

There are many “royals” who don’t really add much to our nation, hanger’s on who should be cut free, but to question the work ethic of most of the senior royals is a bit off. The Queen did 295 official visits in 2019. She’s bloody 93. At 93 my gran struggled to get to Tesco once a week, and she was in really good health!

The royals only own Sandringham and Balmoral. You couldn’t pay me to stay in either of those old, draughty remote properties.

Part of the problem in London in particular is that 60% of rough sleepers are not UK citizens - many of them having 'no recourse to public funds.' - i.e. the British taxpayer doesn't fund them - can we send the EU rough sleepers to Versailles?

Greenpoppins · 31/03/2020 15:55

I would have thought with Kate's intense interest in early years she would put something out. We've seen so many people who have real passion for their field and the public put something useful together. I'm really struggling now to see the point of them.

Relating to the general public shouldn't be that difficult.

MsTSwift · 31/03/2020 15:57

Hmm maybe am being a grouch but this “isn’t she marvellous working at 93” I dont get. She has heirs backing up. Nothing to stop her retiring and letting Charles have a go.

Greenpoppins · 31/03/2020 16:00

I find it hard, as a mother, to hugely admire her still working at 93. Charles isn't going to start his 'real job' until his 70s, or later. Who wants to ONLY start work at that age? And it's the same for all the rest of them and then you are expected to go on into your 90s. I have no envy for Kate or William.

Peregrina · 31/03/2020 16:01

So the rough sleepers have to be UK citizens to be treated with compassion do they? That attitude appals me.

Re Princess Anne - her problem was being born female. I don't doubt if she'd been born a boy they would have done a lot more for her. I think she's done well to carve out a role for herself, and the few people I know who have met her, testify to how she takes her voluntary work seriously, and isn't just a token figurehead. Kate and Wills could both take note.

Clavinova · 31/03/2020 16:03

Relating to the general public shouldn't be that difficult

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have 11 million followers on Instagram and 700,000 views on Twitter/Instagram for Sophie's video for parents and carers - I don't think Kate needs a rival video.

MsTSwift · 31/03/2020 16:03

Bumped into Anne on a train once. A normal train. Good for her

Clavinova · 31/03/2020 16:04

No - a Premier Inn would be fine.

vera99 · 31/03/2020 16:06

Peregrina · 31/03/2020 16:08

It beats me how the Middleton's made so much money with the Party Piece tat. Did one of them have a private income?

The link says: Dead end.

vera99 · 31/03/2020 16:11

Try this they even have the gall to say their stuff is important...

sound very confident? I asked you a question, which you have failed to answer.

I'm surprised that you're a long-term Liberal Democrat voter Peregrina - they've had some pretty tough immigration policies over the years - particularly regarding access to public funds - didn't you read their manifestos - I thought you were a Lib Dem canvasser for your local branch?
canvess

Clavinova · 31/03/2020 16:20

errant 'canvess'

Peregrina · 31/03/2020 16:22

Party Pieces - honestly!

Well, since their work is So Essential, perhaps Kate could go and help out there!

Clavinova · 31/03/2020 16:26

Party Pieces - honestly!

To be fair - 'drive-by' children's parties have been featured on the London news.

vera99 · 31/03/2020 16:28

The Mail photo hounds some hapless person with a pot plant and the Middletons create hundreds possibly thousands of pointless journeys and deliveries and for what?
