The rise in the hero complex

PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock · 28/03/2020 17:08

There has been a certain rise in people claiming they are or thinking they are heroes. "We are saving lives".

That basically involves an avid desire to report anyone that dares to leave the house, police everyone else, dismiss the worries and concerns of others, ridiculing, attacking, bullying and emotionally blackmailing anyone who struggles, some kind of irrational fear/hate of children and gleeful virtue signaling about how much better they are at staying home. Abusing key workers that in their eyes are not doing their job,for doing their job, following guidelines(made up or official) ,not following guidelines,in the wrong clothes etc.

There are people who are seriously struggling right now, emotionally, financially, mentally, physically etc. People that are becoming more and more vulnerable as more restrictions and public policing come in. People that have killed themselves due to the situation we are in.

They are not heroes, they are not saving lives.

I couldn't get through the entire post, cringing to my death

It took me 3 attempts. I didn't even get to the 'I dont want fame' before I posted it.

Was Charlie observing social distancing when he led the pensioners to the front of the queue?

If you take someone out of the queue, not sure how you do it with social distancing. Not sure how Charlie is saving lives, taking people out of queues.

That hurt my brain and made sick in my throat.

I can see how this would happen. This isnt a facebook friend. It was shared in a parenting group.

@ChardonnaysPetDragon what arent you getting. His job is to cut trees down for the railway. Part of the reason they do this (theres probably several reasons) is to keep trains safe and running.

It's not illegal to cut down trees at this time of year. This man still has to go work. You may not think its essential. But it's not your call to make. No one has shut non essential business anyway.

This man can not work from home, therefore he can to work and do his job. Which is entirely legal.

Oh yes, the hero complex.

A mum I know has posted on FB this past week with such lines at ‘proud to work on the front line’, ‘proud to work for NHS’, ‘proud of my colleagues’ ... she works 15 hours a week in an office organising scans.

She also uses her badge for the NHS hour as she is ‘front line and proud.

My friend, who is a single mum nurse and terrified of passing on anything to children, rarely can use the nhs hour because of her shift pattern.

The thing is the same tree surgeons who carry out the work do the surveys.

Wonder how that goes.

So did I. People are howling in the parenting group I am in.

If you post this shit, you should expect people to laugh. Imo.

I posted about this under another name and people had a real go at me, proclaiming it was all sweetness and light and community spirit on their FB feeds. Well, it's not on mine. It's full of people jumping on others who are using their right to exercise as per government guidelines, and calling them out saying they will be responsible for everyone that dies, that it's their fault their relatives on the front lines are facing this, and how much better they are because they will stay in the house and never leave til the year dot. It's a virtue signalling mob mentality and it's potentially very dangerous. How long before someone thinks they are doing us a favour by attacking some poor Sod grabbing 5 mins of fresh air?

Phew! That's a relief, Shitsgetting. I was half expecting you to say that the post was being taken seriously by other heroes.

I now have an image of Charlie (who looks like Peter Perfect from the Horrid Henry series) leading the pensioners to the front of the checkout, with 'Do you hear the people sing?' blasting out the supermarket tannoy.

Thanks shit'sgettingcrazy I wish I hadn't mentioned the tree cutting now.

I understand everyone is frustrated and angry at the situation but disproportionate ire seems to be getting directed at the wrong people.

Wow the Charlie in the Supermarket story Grin
Bit disappointed the whole supermarket didn't break into applause and Charlie wasn't nominated for a Pride of Britain award though.

Ffs let it go. It's not illegal and the client is responsible as well. We had trees cut at work last year. The business paid their own survey to be done, by a seperate tree surgeon. So they covered themseleves.

Theres no reason to believe the ops bil, is out ampintless and gets his jollies from cutting nests down.

Your point was it was illegal. It's not.

Little Charlie sounds like a delight. Grin

I might start posting on Facebook about how my 13 year old is #savinglives by locking herself in her bedroom for 23 hours a day to watch Tiktok videos.

One thing that made me cringe a little was when everybody clapped, (me included) Facebook was full of people afterwards saying I work in the NHS etc, (arent I brilliant sort of thing) half of them wont be anywhere near covid. The NHS is a massive organisation and only yesterday there was a nurse on here saying shes been asked to take her annual leave because they've got nothing to do . .because operations have been cancelled and a lot of wards empty. Not everyone is working on covid19 or anywhere near it. I absolutely applaud those that do, must be awful ...but most of the millions of nurses etc dont. I know this is a silent killer etc, and weve had 1000 deaths now, which is terrible, but we do have up to 9000 deaths every year due to normal flu.

There was someone on our local FB group offering free toilet roll to the vulnerable, with a photo of the huge amount of the stuff they had bought a couple a weeks ago. Cue numerous, "your a hero Hun" type posts. No, she's a fecking pillock who helped caused shortages in the shops.

@wowfudge someone on out lock FB group did this with baby milk. Selling it at the price she bought it for.

I do think her intentions were good. Grabbing 3 each shop in case someone local needed it.

But it didnt enter her head, that when she was taking it iff the shelf, it was causing a parent to have to go to several shops, because her supermarket didnt have it.

Luckily the local community put her right, but in actually a nice way. Because people genuinely believed she had though she was doing a good thing.

Some people are arseholes.
One group of arseholes is holier than thou and loves an opportunity to feel they are righteous.
The other group of arseholes can't seem to get it into their stupid brains that they're no more special than anyone else and the rules apply to them too.

However I'm more than happy for the dominant view to be 'stay at home other than the reasons given'. There has to be a bit of social pressure for some people to get the message not to go to the beach, not to be driving back and forth from their boyfriend's, not to drive to the petrol station because you fancy chocolate, not to have playdates and so on.

Report
JosephineKarlsson · 29/03/2020 09:27

what with being an antisocial, grumpy, miserable sod at the best of time

Grin me too!

People are just arseholes. The pressure is on and it’s showing a lot of people for who they are really

True. And some people are positively relishing the drama.

The real heroes are people who quietly do the right thing by staying at home

We're not heroes, we're just following orders.

Loving this thread.

One of my colleagues was going on about the flowers she was given in Tesco for working in the NHS and how they said she was a hero. I note she didn't tell them that was her last day at work, she wasn't staying in the NHS or bring in the flowers for all her colleagues who are getting redeployed this week to the front line.

Anyway this was all filler, I'm just here for my Spanish soldier....

Oh god. I saw last night that locally someone has set up a ‘name and shame’ Facebook group for people spotted flouting social distancing. They were encouraging people to post pictures. I know we’re all a bit bored but Confused

Really? Hmm
I'm pretty sure they're just exasperated about the number of people constantly making excuses and adding to the death rate.

@peapod29 I agree it sounds ott but the only reason lockdown has happened is because of people thinking they're special and constantly bending the rules to suit them.

Soon we won't be allowed out at all because people STILL can't be sensible :(
