The rise in the hero complex

PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock · 28/03/2020 17:08

There has been a certain rise in people claiming they are or thinking they are heroes. "We are saving lives".

That basically involves an avid desire to report anyone that dares to leave the house, police everyone else, dismiss the worries and concerns of others, ridiculing, attacking, bullying and emotionally blackmailing anyone who struggles, some kind of irrational fear/hate of children and gleeful virtue signaling about how much better they are at staying home. Abusing key workers that in their eyes are not doing their job,for doing their job, following guidelines(made up or official) ,not following guidelines,in the wrong clothes etc.

There are people who are seriously struggling right now, emotionally, financially, mentally, physically etc. People that are becoming more and more vulnerable as more restrictions and public policing come in. People that have killed themselves due to the situation we are in.

They are not heroes, they are not saving lives.

I don't mind people working. I go out to work, as well, but I'm sorry, I cannot accept your point about the tree works being done by the rail companies as responsible. This has beed going on for many months now and there have been petitions about their irresponsible behaviour.

But you are right about one thing, this is for a different thread.

Thank you @IrisAtwood. Sorry to hear you’re in the same position and I hope you can continue to enjoy your well deserved walks.

@BlueMoon1103 yes I feel exactly the same as you. You can certainly tell the people on here that have no idea how serious depression, anxiety etc is. As you said it’s disgusting the treatment that some get, heroes is the last thing they are.

So glad I found this thread, you are my kind of people.

The hero honeschoolers on my youngest dd's wattsap group really got me down. Some mums had a meltdown because of them. It's really sad.

I actually nearly cringed myself inside out at the post going round Facebook yesterday supposedly by a nurse who had an elderly man drive into her car and drive away and when she tracked him down he was gasping for air etc so she did what a good nurse would do etc. If she's real I was mortified for her.

We have been in lock down for nearly a week. No one has killed themselves just because of this. Some people who were already struggling have.
Over simplifying what leads to suicide is irresponsible and can lead to suicide contagion.

It reminded me of people who film themselves chatting to homeless people and then put it on Facebook to show everyone how wonderful they are for chatting to a homeless person.

I mean, yes, do the thing. Take the man to the hospital, chat to the homeless person, but for goodness sake you don't need a pat on the back from social media for being a decent human being.

You also see it on threads here

'Old person in front of me tried to buy 4 [insert random item] so I got it for them'

It's always really random and nothing to do with the thread.

@FrangipaniBlue 🍸🍸

Oh and let's not forget the friggin crusaders who think they are hero's for campaigning to shut down any family takeaway that dares remain open.

They have been asked to stay open..ffs. Campaigning to have them shut as "you" have a righteous look at me complex; I'm on a fuckwit crusade.....whilst conveniently forgetting that quite a lot of these are actually supplying hot meals to vulnerable members of our communities and shift workers; they are just not being dicks about it. Or crowing what hero's they are, it called being decent and trying to do the right thing.

I really do need to come off the local Facebook page 🤣

Just seen a post on a local group that one of the areas largest employers is still open. Complaining they are acting illegally.

It's part of the food industry. Not essential food, but They have changed how they work for social distancing.

But people dont seem to understand that no one has said non essential businesses must close.

My OP was inspired by threads on here. My FB is mostly filled with memes and funny pics ,other people's kids and let's smile chain random things. There are a few twats, but I just scroll faster.

The lack of understanding about mental health and other things people struggle with quite severely really got to me yesterday. Bullying and sneering at the "weak" and "special" wrapped up under the guise of saving lives and the greater good.

A shit wrapped up in chocolate foil is still a shit.

Oh,and Charlie can go fuck himself.

Someone on my FB who works as a MUA for a living started having a huge rant on Tuesday about seeing a cafe that had remained open when she was "driving to work on the frontline and risking her life". Yes, because that's what they do to inexperienced, unqualified volunteers...they send them to ITU to intubate patients 🙄

I've been screeched at for a while now about how dare I care about the economy. PEOPLES LIVES ARE AT STAKE!!!
all because I dared to point out that the economy shutting down would be a bad thing for alot of people. Including myself as we now have no income, can't pay our bills/rent with no end in sight. That really does a number on your mental health.
But you know, people live are at stake... Ffs

Yes nearly started a similar thread on this myself.

This has really brought out a nasty self righteous side in some people which lately involves criticising and policing others!

Report
isabellerossignol · 29/03/2020 11:09

Yes. I agree about the economy. Its not because I value money above lives, far from it. It's because long term poverty is known to have a negative effect on life expectancy etc. This is a terrible illness, and I do believe that it is right that we currently have restrictions in place in order to tackle it. But it is only one illness out of many that the government / public health experts have to consider when making decisions. Which is why I am happy to abide by the decisions currently being made, rather than decide for myself that they aren't enough or whatever.

I've found the Facebook 'police' more terrifying than the Corona virus. So many posts full of vitriol. My local police force has joined in with an online form to report breaches of the guidance. It is scary how quickly it has happened.

My local Facebook group is full of people embracing their inner stasi and moaning about people doing exercise.

Totally agree about the mental health element. It wasn't long ago when Caroline Flack died we were all talking about being kind and understanding about mental health and now that's all gone out the window. There was a recent thread where the OP was really struggling alone and some of the posts were so lacking in empathy I was shocked.

Normally followed by the "what?you don't have at least 3 months income in savings?" Faux naïveté.
