They would be closed to the public who would use click and collect. Jeez

Click and collect?! You think 70+ million people can be fed via click and collect??! You’re getting more preposterous with each post!

Do you realise that not everybody has access to the internet, to people who can use the internet for them; to cars or public transport? Do you think all the major national food retailers are geared up on ANY LEVEL to feed the nation via click and collect? Do you think car parks full of people queuing up to collect their groceries - complying with social distancing rules - is feasible? What about urban areas and inner cities? What if people are too sick to go collect their groceries? And so on and so forth.

You can make the point about education being important without saying it’s more important than starvation and health.

Jeez Hmm

Teateaandmoretea · 28/03/2020 20:23

@shanghai there is a limit to education in lockdown after a couple of months I imagine. Fair enough it's all about balance and there is learning in everything in the short term. But I truly believe that getting children back to school must be one of the priorities in a couple of months. Even if it proves impossible ahead of September for the UK.

Teateaandmoretea · 28/03/2020 20:26

Yep, or as close as possible. People have the telephone even if they don't have the internet. It would mean no need for supermarkets to mess around stacking shelves. Therefore more people to sort out orders for collection.

Where is your evidence that moving towards click and collect is entirely impossible? I suggest YOU are preposterous and lacking imagination.

awkwardbuttons · 28/03/2020 20:30

You'd need an awful lot of staff if everyone had either a click and collect or a delivery. I'm not sure it would be covered by the other shop floor staff because actually packing orders is much more time intensive.

If robots could do it (I think Ocado has trialled this) then it might be feasible.

user127819 · 28/03/2020 20:35

I think the 3 weeks will be extended and I think that was always the plan. They just said 3 weeks to begin with to make it less daunting for people.

Teateaandmoretea · 28/03/2020 20:35

You'd need less staff than if you're trying to do both as at present. That is what is broken at the moment with everyone queueing up desperate to get in. It's a massive risk for spreading the virus.

Right now they are trying to manage online, opening hours, people in store, stock on the shelves, man the tills. There is a lot of work involved in the supermarkets being open to all.

tempnamechange98765 · 28/03/2020 20:37

Yes I think an extension too. No idea for how long. I think 3 weeks was said as it's a short period of time, the Gov don't want to panic people.

ShanghaiDiva · 28/03/2020 20:42

i don’t know why you think children returning to school would not be a priority.
You have accused me of lacking imagination and empathy. Reopening schools is not just about children returning. My dd’s school will hopefully reopen in mid April. This is the reality of managing that process:
How to manage lunch breaks
Disinfecting toys etc for younger children
Should parents be allowed on campus
Should children with a temperature be allowed to return
Should social distancing be maintained - how do we stop groups of children congregating together?
What about group activities
How do we evacuate the school in an emergency if we still have social distancing
And on and on..
This is a complex process and you seem completely unaware of the challenges involved.

woodlands01 · 28/03/2020 20:50

I don't think anyone in education expects school to be back before September. Mid April will not happen

Tootletum · 28/03/2020 21:01

@bluntness100 Yes I'm not sure if people realise how utterly fucked we are the less economic activity there is. They seem to think our standard of living is just magically better than, say, Indonesia, and that the economy "doesn't matter" compared to the risk of catching CV. However it's not the companies that have closed voluntarily, they've been bullied by Unite after their members have been whipped into a frenzy of fear. If the govt cans the 80% subsidy, I think there'll be a very different mood wrt risk of being at work.

Maisiecow · 28/03/2020 21:33

@tea There is absolutely NO way that supermarkets can supply the entire nation with click and collect/home delivery. They don’t have anything close to the infrastructure to carry this out. I have asked my DH who is a supermarket manager the same question. To give you some idea his store has recently increased its capacity to offer these services by 200%. Since these orders don’t pack themselves or vans load themselves the pickers required are at full capacity. I.e., there are so many working in such close proximity that it is impossible to keep to 2m rule. As you know, even with this increased provision they are nothing like close to supplying the whole of the UK population with this service. Closing food retailers is simply not an option no matter which way you try to argue the contrary.

MigginsMrs · 28/03/2020 21:44

Agree @Tootletum. I’ve come across workers asking to be furloughed even though their job isn’t going to be laid off, they just don’t want to come to work. Call me cynical but I wonder how many were out in the pubs til closing time and on the beach last weekend, but come Monday too “scared” to come to work. They change their minds when they find out their roles aren’t eligible for furlough and would be either on SSP or unpaid leave.

It’s a shame because if the furlough scheme ends up canned because of the piss takers it’ll be those people who cannot work as their place of work has actually been closed who will suffer:

Casino218 · 28/03/2020 21:47

Look at Italy then if we are behind them by 2 weeks that is what will happen. Lockdown will continue.

darktriad · 28/03/2020 23:24

I don't think the guidelines have been clear at all, DH and I have had a cough now for 7 days, it didn't occur to us that it could be the virus as neither of us has had a temperature. I have a cough most of the time anyway because of my asthma

Peppafrig · 29/03/2020 03:20

@woodlands01 that's not true our head has said time and time again she will see the kids in August.

MyOtherProfile · 29/03/2020 06:59

Those posters saying it's not fair if children don't go back to school soon - you know they ARE still getting an education, right?

Sostenueto · 29/03/2020 07:10

Well I tried getting a foodshop order and I would have to wait 3 weeks for a delivery slot as I can't go out for 12 weeks so your talking out of your backsides if you believe it can be done Nationwide.

Toomboom · 29/03/2020 07:12

I think it will be extended by at least 3 weeks. Then reviewed again

OpticVA · 29/03/2020 07:13

@Bluntness100 not all businesses can afford to keep trading in this climate though, especially small ones. My employer has had to furlough all of us as there is just not the business there for us to keep going. It was close down and put everyone on furlough until things pick up again or shut up shop for good and us all get made redundant. It’s not as black and white as people wanting a extended holiday.

cornishdreams1 · 29/03/2020 07:26

I am expecting a lockdown of 12 weeks (11 weeks now) and anything less will be a bonus. Next week the fight really begins, and we will be peaking around Easter.

I am not expecting my children to attend school until September. I will be thrilled to go out anywhere by July or August time. I expect the lockdowns may have to come and go after this period to deal with future waves until the vaccine is ready.

I think of none of this in any detail, and have chosen to take one day at a time.

KeepWashingThoseHands · 29/03/2020 07:32

The lockdown won't just be for 3 weeks (and we'll be on proper lockdown soon because of idiots who apparently can't follow simple guidelines).

I'm expecting an initial 8-12 weeks of varying measures. Some let up over summer and another lockdown in autumn.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 29/03/2020 08:40

Guidance will become rules more powers given to the police to in force them and more police checks lockdown shall become stricter this week

Will be extended then relaxed gradually I think over a 12 week period

Sostenueto · 29/03/2020 08:48

As expected tighter measures will be rolled out within a week judging by Michael Goves avoidance of what further measures will entail. We are all going to get a letter from the PM in the next week which will be a change from bills. This is what happens when people don't comply!hmm

Springhere · 29/03/2020 09:08

I think we'll have lockdown for 12 weeks then loosened restrictions (but still social distancing) over the summer. I hope schools can safely reopen in September but I'm not convinced they will.

Crackerofdoom · 29/03/2020 09:19

I don't think Boris will tighten restrictions. His current vagueness serves his purpose very well. If people are angry because they are being stopped by officers then it is police overreach. If the spread of the virus doesn't slow it it the fault of the people not following the rules.

I do expect the lockdown to be extended. I am in Austria and we are about 2 weeks ahead of you. Our lockdown has already been extended to 14 April.

There is also no doubt that schools and nurseries will be the last places to reopen because children will spread the virus far more quickly than adults.

The latest talk here is that they will reopen for the equivalent of year 11 and year 13 and do intensive exam prep for those kids with a possibly postponed exam period and keep the rest at home.

This is anecdotal from teaching friends though so may change.
