having said that, the illness and death rate is still pretty bad in the netherlands. and some regions move intensive care patients to germany.

boatyardblues · 29/03/2020 09:33

Still catching up, but interested to see the Korean virologist saying that citizens can pay to be tested for CV19 privately for 170k₩ (140USD) and if the test is positive the Korean govt refunds the test fee as it considers it useful data. What a sensible approach. Yes, people on lower incomes are less likely to be tested (a weakness), but the fee deters the worried well, whereas those with symptoms managing at home can be tested & be confident of getting their money back. You build a much clearer picture of community spread.

TheCanterburyWhales · 29/03/2020 09:53

We have at the moment no shortages here either. Only thing I've not been able to find is fresh yeast.

TheCanterburyWhales · 29/03/2020 10:01

Oh, btw, the guy in Puglia kicking out at the police- the local news channels, after reporting pretty much the same as the national ones, that he had no money, couldn't eat etc- the local channel said "further to our story bla bla' apparently the guy is a self employed businessman and was trying to withdraw his mother's pension from the cashpoint but either the cashpoint was empty or he'd gone on the day before it had been paid in or something. On the video you also see (if I've understood properly though I haven't seen it) someone approaching and offering him money and him telling them to fuck off he doesn't need charity.

It's hard to know what to think really. I think there is more likely to be serious civil unrest in the UK though.

boatyardblues · 29/03/2020 10:01

I’m still watching the Korean virologist that Red linked. It’s really interesting. The govt delayed the start of the school year, but kids are under so much pressure academically they are still attending their hagwons (private academies/crammers) at night, 90% of which remain open. Similarly, there are generational differences. Older citizens are more compliant with social distancing & wearing masks etc. He says the 20 somethings are still going to crowded clubs and bars, drinking and dancing and not wearing masks. 30% of new cases are currently people in their 20s for this reason.

mrshoho · 29/03/2020 10:07

morning all. Thanks for that report @Jrobhatch29. It gives clarity to the groups of patients requiring ICU treatment and their likely outcomes. Frightening looking ahead as those numbers will multiply.

With regard to where the additional NHS staff will come from. I know of 8 friends who have been called to move from their current roles ranging from paediatric nurses, community nurses, nurse practice development manager, junior dr. There will be the many nurses on their final year pushed through and also those recently left the NHS. There is real concerns that there will be adequate numbers of medical staff who are properly trained. Those who have already been through ICU care and survived are the 'lucky' ones in many ways.

Supermarkets in my town seem to be very active on local Facebook groups now, updating people re queue times to get in and stock levels etc. I did our weekly shop on Friday thinking the weekend would be busier but the queue then was long and they were stopping more cars entering the car park at some points. Apparently I chose poorly as they were posting to say it was quiet all day yesterday and they've said it looks quiet right now too. No stock issues either other than toilet roll, I got everything we needed on Friday.

Be interesting to see if the queues ramp up again after the weekend.

Morning all. I can't shake this tiredness at all.
@Canklesforankles thank you for the suggestion. I've got the local group to collect my prescription for me but I'm reluctant to use them unless necessary. The vouchers are valid for two years and due to not needing to pay out for bus fares and everyday bits and bobs I'm ok for money at the moment and ok for food thanks to my brexit stash. The only thing I'm short of is snacks but that's not the end of the world and we can always make cookies and cakes. The inability to snack will hopefully reset our habits. Silver linings.

I wonder if new restrictions will be introduced this coming week? One of my neighbours was out in his car for hours yesterday and is gone again today. He's a lecturer and the uni is closed. I think they need to be a lot clearer on things. I distinctly remember bozo saying that we were to shop for essentials every few days when necessary. Some seem to think they get to go to the shops daily and go for a daily run/walk/whatever.

Helenj1977 · 29/03/2020 11:36

Hi everyone. I've been bleaching today. Got a banging headache now! We're not going out bar walks but I feel I need to clean.

I wonder when the 3 month lock down will be announced. I think it will be longer then that.

BeyondMymymymyCorona · 29/03/2020 11:42

Morning all

Bercows, for snacks I just did an order with the shop on Graze. Obviously it's not the cheapest way, but they had 30% off everything when I looked.

From the Guardian

Two-thirds of people in UK want Brexit transition extension - poll

Polling commissioned by cross-party campaign group Best for Britain and anti-racism group HOPE not hate has suggested that almost two-thirds of people in the UK want the government to request an extension to the Brexit transition period in order to focus on the coronavirus outbreak.

The Focaldata poll of 2,022 people showed 64% of people agreed with the statement, “The government should request an extension to the transition period in order to focus properly on the Coronavirus’, while more than a third – 36% – agreed with the statement “The Brexit transition period must end on 31 December whether a deal has been fixed or not”.

Best for Britain’s call for an extension to the transition period has been echoed by numerous bodies and pressure groups, including the Scottish and Welsh Governments.

The same poll also found that 65% of people polled wished the government to seek membership of the EU early warning and response system for medical emergencies amid reported reluctance within No 10 to remain a member.

Best for Britain CEO Naomi Smith said:

It’s simply not reasonable to expect we will have tied up negotiations with the EU by the end of the year while dealing with a warlike emergency. Nor is it desirable.

Most people just want the government to get on with the job at hand so that lives can be saved and normality restored as quickly as possible. The country is simply not in a place to weather two storms at the moment.

HOPE not hate CEO Nick Lowles said:

EU schemes like the Early Warning and Response System and the ventilator procurement programme are critical tools for responding to this urgent public health crisis.

The government must put politics aside and urgently seek participation in these schemes. It would be foolhardy for ideology to get in the way of practical measures to keep people safe.

pocketem · 29/03/2020 12:25

The brexit debate is pretty much moot at the moment. An extension is a certainty. No need to crow about it

Donenow1 · 29/03/2020 12:37

Is there a new thread 35?

woodencoffeetable · 29/03/2020 12:53

it's not moot until an extension has been actively sought and agreed.

SistemaAddict · 29/03/2020 12:56

No one is crowing about it ffs Hmm

There's a way to go on this thread yet. Smile

RedToothBrush · 29/03/2020 13:31

Right. As I understand it this is in the works mainly because both the UK and EU don't have much option at the moment cos we are both snowed under.

So its a conversation thats not even worth having in March

All it will do is work everyone up when its not necessary and we have enough on our plates.

AutumnRose1 · 29/03/2020 13:50

Does anyone know if there’s a press conference today please?

Helenj1977 · 29/03/2020 13:59

I think so. I wonder who they'll scrape together for it!

Helenj1977 · 29/03/2020 14:02

I have a feeling we won't use the extra hospitals they're building.

The figures aren't too bad today...

Helenj1977 · 29/03/2020 14:03

UPDATE on coronavirus (#COVID19) testing in the UK:

As of 9am 29 March, a total of 127,737 have been tested:

108,215 negative.
19,522 positive.

As of 5pm on 28 March, of those hospitalised in the UK, 1,228 have sadly died.

WhoWants2Know · 29/03/2020 14:06

Not too bad? More than 299 deaths in 24 hours is not too bad? Shock
