Keepdistance I don't know about surgical masks but dust proof masks have a nano cloth layer such as seen in hepa filters. Sometimes infused with carbon.

pocketem · 28/03/2020 18:15

RedToothBrush - France ordered a billion masks from China today. They are out there if your government wants them

Worried About Coronavirus- thread 34

With respect to gloves and goggles - I know school science departments have them. And most would be willing to donate them, but they need to be actually asked due to other pressures at the moment. Tech departments may also have dust masks. None of which will be currently used due to the schools being "closed"

Somelady · 28/03/2020 18:32

There is a lot of unnecessary manufacturing continuing that will have stocks of dust masks

Janemarpling · 28/03/2020 18:33

My School have donated theres.

They are cloudy some of them but we have given what we have.

Janemarpling · 28/03/2020 18:33

Theirs ugh

WhyNotMe40 · 28/03/2020 18:36

I have asked my school but I think there's a budget worry about restocking them afterwards

mrshoho · 28/03/2020 19:10

Flowers I'm very sorry for your loss Rosie.

We've had day 1 of dh at home shielding. It's going to take some time adjusting! We've put in an online application for UC and looked through finances to see where we can cut back so was feeling calmer. But my mind is racing now as to how long this could go on for him and all the other very vulnerable people in this group. The government guidelines say for at least 12 weeks. But then what? Yes the social distancing will hopefully have dappened down the spread of the virus and the NHS will be able to cope with the amount of people becoming ill, but until a vaccine is produced won't these very vulnerable people still be at very high risk? My imagination is now in overdrive thinking he may be stuck at home for much much longer.

Katie2017 · 28/03/2020 19:45

I read about that nurse and that poor man who hadn't eaten for days yesterday-he'd been taken into hospital and I prayed he would make it! So sad to read now...how did he manage to catch the virus if he had no friends or family or anyone to call though? Just from previously going to the shops? That's really scary and tragic. Or maybe he didn't have the virus at all and was just scared he did. I think it's a big wake-up call-not everyone is someones "mother/father/grandmother/grandfather"-there are people with no children out there and no family at all who are at huge risk of getting forgotten about. So heartbreaking.

I was reading that grandparents thread last night too-what happened?!

NoWordForFluffy · 28/03/2020 19:53

I thought the grandparents thread might be a troll. Unfortunately it's the type of thing they feed on.

willdoitinaminute · 28/03/2020 19:55

Too many other variables for the mask theory. Much more likely to be testing and isolating every contact and positive tested individual has had. The compulsory quarantining has been more effective than any other measure. But low numbers of infection rate in the whole population will come back and bite them in the bum.

Katie2017 · 28/03/2020 19:58

NoWordForFluffy God that is disgusting if true but we don't know for sure? It did cross my mind for a second I'm not sure why but wow...

Nogoodnickname · 28/03/2020 20:00

Apparently the Liverpool team didn’t want to play the match against Atletico Madrid, and were saying in the changing room that they really didn’t want to go out to play against them. I think if Klopp had the last word, that match wouldn’t have went ahead. Unfortunately he and the Liverpool players are overruled by FIFA, who in my opinion are some selfish fat cats only concerned with lining there already full pockets and don’t really don’t care about the welfare of their fans, who are basically the general public. These people have blood on their hands. FWIW, I live in Liverpool and am absolutely livid about this. I’m isolating myself,my DS and DH and have been for a few weeks before government guidelines due to me having chronic kidney disease.

NoWordForFluffy · 28/03/2020 20:01

@Katie2017, they have a certain tone to them. I can't explain it, but I can spot it. They're despicable. Angry

Namechangervaver · 28/03/2020 20:03

The UK could have joined in the bulk-buying of Personal Protective Equipment for healthcare workers that the EU did last month, but refused because <a class="break-all" href="//%27threadreaderapp.com/thread/1243835852259840000.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"> 'Brexit means Brexit'.

People in Italy organising raids on supermarkets using social media. Reported on Sky News' just now. It's getting like Contagion

TheCanterburyWhales · 28/03/2020 20:17

It was the BOTH grandparents that did it for me. Possible but even with Covid, not probable.
Foul bottom feeders, trolls.

TheCanterburyWhales · 28/03/2020 20:19

Sicily. Organized crime.
It's not happening all over.

Katie2017 · 28/03/2020 20:26

TheCanterburyWhales it did seem unlikely, especially since they were previously in good health supposedly. But I'm surprised it could ever get to the point of calling them out on it in case it was true-I guess it must've been pretty obvious in the end. What a shocking thing to do though Angry

Freshairimportanttoo · 28/03/2020 20:45

No good that will go 👇 in the history that match for all the wrong reasons.
. Sir Patrick and his obsessed model have been v quiet recently

IronNeonClasp · 28/03/2020 21:17

@RosieSunset - awful. My cousins ex-H dies (alcoholic) Thursday and they are allowing 4 family members only.

@Alwayscheerful - me too.

I've ordered a couple more - better ones with the filter. Probably shit but I don't care. And yes people look at me like a loon/avoid me but I'm not bothered. It reminds me to be cacaos at all times. And I am not the only only person wearing them now which is comforting.

@pocketem - have you got a source for wearing of masks (US) everyday?

IronNeonClasp · 28/03/2020 21:18

*cautious !

WhyNotMe40 · 28/03/2020 21:23

I would really like some washable masks for when I am on rota at school - what do I need to look for?

Eeyoresstickhouse · 28/03/2020 21:31

For those who haven't watched it, I heartily recommend Pandemic on Netflix. A brilliant, scary insight into scientists and pandemic experts.

This was filmed before this current pandemic. But all of the scientists and drs were warning and warning about the seriousness of what was to come and funding has been cut and cut.
