I am furious about this. Realise I am probably not thinking clearly in the circumstances.

FIL died today. Undertakers have been in to speak to MIL.

Local church will not do church services anymore- understandable.

Ministers from the church are prepared to do a graveside service with two people in attendance. Also understandable.

The undertakers have told MIL they have a “guy” who will conduct a service graveside with more people there. Not a minister or ordained person or celebrant. A “guy” who is spiritual/religious and prepared to do this.

I am somewhere between furious and utter disbelief. Most of the people would be 70+. How many other people had this “guy” been in contact with recently? At “services” and other places he’s breached the rules.

What about the undertakers, if they are prepared to do this what else are they doing? Why are they making this suggestion to a grief-stricken woman who have just lost her husband of nearly fifty years. Why are they putting her in that position?

I get they are trying to be kind so she doesn’t have to tell his siblings etc they can’t come. But they are all over 70, many have health conditions. They are supposed to be sheltering.

Jesus Christ.

Our neighbours from hell situation continues. We found somewhere we could rent short term earlier this week and then obviously lockdown happened. Since last night music, shouting, swearing, banging on their ceiling (our floor) when we dare to bang them to tell them to quiten down. I am so close to a nervous breakdown it is untrue. I had one 5 years ago. The worst time of my life, and all the old feelings are back again. Just due to shitty neighbours and being stuck indoors.

Alwayscheerful · 28/03/2020 17:22

I have been wearing masks for a couple of weeks. I notice people are more inclined to keep away from you if you wear one. Effective or not they are a good reminder to stay well away.

SistemaAddict · 28/03/2020 17:22

@Rosiesunset I'm sorry to hear about your grandad Thanks

SistemaAddict · 28/03/2020 17:23

@picklemewalnuts yes, that was the thread

AvocadoOwl · 28/03/2020 17:24

Why are we still having so few people 'recovering'? Does anyone know what the testing is for seeing if someone has recovered from covid in the UK?

It was the same scenario at this point in China, hardly any recoveries making it into the figures.

I have no idea what our criteria is for someone to be considered recovered but highly doubt we are using up precious limited tests on people who are better. I believe the Chinese had to have 2 negative tests over a period of a few days.

I'd suggest the current figure is pretty meaningless.

Also, it can take some people several weeks to recover so there is always going to be a fair lag.

TheCanterburyWhales · 28/03/2020 17:25

Rosie, so sorry.

Jemima- the UK I think is too early in the spread for many to be classed as recovered. Here, in my town, our first case was officially classed as "recovered" this week after being in isolation for just over 3 weeks.

Somelady · 28/03/2020 17:27

I hate my neighbors too eeyore. It's not really anyone's fault though is it when we live in such crowded conditions. Makes me sick the rent people expect for housing like this. On masks they should offer some protection but where to draw the line on PPE, glasses, goggles, waterproof clothing

Delatron · 28/03/2020 17:29

I have a friend (medic) who developed symptoms after Cheltenham too. Though I guess he would have been more likely to have picked it up in the hospital and spread it round Cheltenham.

Keepdistance · 28/03/2020 17:29

Maybe you can plan something like a remembrance for a year's time.
Though I guess there may be a covid remembrance day maybe we could have rainbow pins badges etc. With money donated to nhs for infectious disease provision.

baublegirl454 · 28/03/2020 17:31

So if they do decide we all need to wear masks, where on earth would we get them from? There aren't enough for medics?

Namechangervaver · 28/03/2020 17:41

I have a friend (medic) who developed symptoms after Cheltenham too.

I'm surprised a medic didn't realise Cheltenham wasn't a great idea

Furious today. Apparently BIL, who lives with FIL (70s, MIL died last month), has gone off to visit his boyfriend today. Not only is this against the 'rules', but the boyfriend has potentially been in contact with a case at work, so extra risky. It's bad enough we can't visit FIL and keep him company, help him while he is grieving. Now he's being exposed to extra risk because BIL assumes the rules don't apply to him!

On the PPE front, we are only using at work for suspected cases, still doing close contact with patients. Possibly the guidance will change soon to recommend we wear it for all patient care, but I imagine that depends on stock levels...

MurrayTheMonk · 28/03/2020 17:47

I was promised a delivery of face masks to my care home from the government a week ago last Friday. They have not arrived.

I've got 5 out of 10 high needs disabled people with suspected cases and an already very reduced staff team and we are very short on PPE with no way of Getting more as none of my usual suppliers have it. Talk of PPE being 'on its way' to the NHS for the last week has really boiled me and also worried the hell out of me-because if they still aren't getting it, as lots of NHS workers are saying-then we sure as hell have no chance.

Delatron · 28/03/2020 17:51

Completely agree @namechangemania he was an idiot to go. But I also guess some people were looking for direction and advice from the government. I remember listening to one mp saying of course it was fine to go to the rugby, he was there, as were the royals, all was fine. This was two weeks ago!! We can judge now but two weeks ago we we’re being told very different things (unfortunately). I wouldn’t have gone. Thousands did though....

At the time I thought it was all madness and of course there were thousands of cases out there that we didn’t know about. Why were the government (and many people in general) saying ‘oh there’s only 100 or so cases therefore we don’t need social distancing or stronger measures’

How can people be that thick? Of course there were thousands more cases than quoted.

JemimaPuddleCat · 28/03/2020 17:58

Rosie I'm so sorry about your FIL Flowers

Keepdistance · 28/03/2020 18:00

How are surgical masks made.
This thread or another talked of home made masks.

RedToothBrush · 28/03/2020 18:00

Where do we get all these masks that NHS workers need most but can't get?

At this point it doesn't matter whether its better for all of us to wear masks or not, if even those most at risk / most likely to spread it can't get one.

MarshaBradyo · 28/03/2020 18:00

Exactly we can’t get them anyway.

Somelady · 28/03/2020 18:02

They are still being manufactured. You have to pre order and wait a few weeks

Helenj1977 · 28/03/2020 18:03

@RosieSunset I'm so sorry about your FIL 💐 What a horrible situation for you all x

JemimaPuddleCat · 28/03/2020 18:04

Thanks avacado and Canterbury

EducatingArti · 28/03/2020 18:07

Masks help protect others if those who are infectious wear them. They are not so good at protecting an individual wearing them from the virus

FingonTheValiant · 28/03/2020 18:07

Thanks Canterbury.

Worldometers reporting 889 new deaths for Italy. 5974 new cases.

Keepdistance · 28/03/2020 18:12

I think the issue was the risk in that day kids I school didn't know who had come back from abroad after half term so we really couldn't judge the risk.
Dd2 got ill day6 after half term. We hadn't been abroad. So realistically she got it at nursery or swimming pool. She swam 3 times that week...
But if we did have CV then if testing had been done a warning could have been made about the pools and nursery.
Also with contact tracing better they would have identified all the people coming back who should have SI but we're going out and having friends in etc. Hopefully we will end up with larger fines for this and we will keep them and use them when needed at other times.
Also the fact nhs wouldn't acknowledge that after week 1 it could be Cv without you being abroad meant that anyone who was ill for weeks 2/3 etc was just expected to carry on going to work and schools etc
