Oh that's sad, Red!

We've leafleted every house in our village making sure everyone knows how to get help. I do hope there aren't other people in the same state.

Donald Trump says first thing Boris Johnson told him on call was 'we need more ventilators'

Remember we refused to join in with the EU procurement venture we were invited to join

Yes, people in care homes with usual chest infections, falls, potential obstructions etc are being treated conservatively and not sent to hospital. GPs reluctant to even set foot in a care home due to infection control risk, and if they do come out they have been told not to admit to hospital unless unavoidable so many elderly in care homes are just managed with palliative care

Leekandpotatosoup · 28/03/2020 16:15

That poor man who died without food. How sad. How many pensioners are there in the UK? Would it be too difficult to identify all if them via DWP databases for food delivery priority?

Does anyone know how things are in Singapore? They were dealing with it well a couple of weeks ago.

This is about the most detailed information I follow every day for Italy. I'm not sure how they are testing though. It does say each day the number of people tested.

Somelady · 28/03/2020 16:20

No sorry looks like 5 French age 15- 44 with comorbidities died the next day

BackInTime · 28/03/2020 16:23

I’m so cross that Cheltenham and those football/rugby matches were allowed to happen and we didn’t enforce stricter measures sooner.

I agree and at that point we were repeatedly told that the risks of these outdoor sports events was minimal and that banning large public gatherings would have little impact in stopping the spread. Whereas now leaving your home for a walk is fraught with risks.

FingonTheValiant · 28/03/2020 16:24

Thanks Canterbury, what I’m wondering is what time period too they report. So when they report this evening is it actually the numbers for yesterday, or for today? Iyswim.

NEW: The American CDC guidance on masks is expected to change in the next week. Masks are commonly used by the general population in Asian countries which have dealt with epidemics such as SARS in the past, but generally in the West their use has been discouraged and people told they are ineffective except for certain high risk groups. New guidance is for all Americans to use masks in day to day life

Jrobhatch29 · 28/03/2020 16:27

My sons nursery teachers husband has had symptoms since returning from cheltenham x

Greenbutterlfy566 · 28/03/2020 16:37

Pocket. So do masks work? I'm Confued as we were being told that they don't work?

BeyondMymymymyCorona · 28/03/2020 16:42

Does anyone have a graph or table showing total deaths for each individual day rather than cumulative deaths?

Or maybe one showing cumulative, but as a percentage of the population/per million population.

Or even one (if I were to be extra demanding!) that shows both - individual deaths per day as a %?

I find it weird that people are comparing raw cumulative numbers, even for countries that are massively different in size.

justchecking1 · 28/03/2020 16:51

Italy and the U.K. are very similar in population (60.5 vs 65 million)

justchecking1 · 28/03/2020 16:52

There is a cases per million population column on Worldometer

woodencoffeetable · 28/03/2020 16:52

there is a concern that simple masks are not good enough to use for longer than half an hour and could make people complacent wrt keeping a distance to other people.

pocketem · 28/03/2020 16:53

So do masks work? I'm Confued as we were being told that they don't work?

Western experts told us they don't work, except magically for healthcare workers and for those who are infected.

Asian experts, who have actual real world experience of dealing with SARS, MERS and countless other epidemics, universally recommended mask wearing by the general population. Notably their countries have done far better in controlling coronavirus than Europe or the USA

MarshaBradyo · 28/03/2020 16:55

Masks work better for others than the person wearing it. So if everyone does then yes there is a benefit.

MarshaBradyo · 28/03/2020 16:55

But that’s different to thinking a mask will protect you alone.

MyHipsDontLieUnfortunately · 28/03/2020 17:02

So do masks work? I'm Confued as we were being told that they don't work?

We're being told whatever suits the play-it-down narrative, until the lies no longer hold.

EmeraldShamrock · 28/03/2020 17:03

Western experts told us they don't work, except magically for healthcare workers and for those who are infected
Exactly. If you wore it for half hour and kept the 2m distance I bet it helps.

MyHipsDontLieUnfortunately · 28/03/2020 17:03

If masks were really so unnecessary, 3M would be out of business and medics would never need wear them again, going forward.

stardust22 · 28/03/2020 17:04

My husband works for a supermarket & in the coming weeks will need to train new drivers. They will be sat in a van together for 4-6 hrs.
They have been told the new employees will wear a mask & gloves whilst in the van. I am still worried about this, they will be in a confined space for a long time. Do you think I shouldn't worry?

TheCanterburyWhales · 28/03/2020 17:05

Fingon- not totally sure but on the lunchtime news bulletins we hear about the previous day.
Every day there is the press conference at 6pm which is when the figures are given, and there is no prior news about the figures (apart from Lombardia whose governor gives theirs out about half an hour beforehand) so I'm guessing it's either from about mid- afternoon to mid-afternoon or alternatively, the 24 hours leading up to midnight.

Our town had its first death today- the man who was "reported" to the police because he had come back down in the exodus from Milan on the 7th. He had a shop in town and didn't self report to the authorities when he came back. He was taken into hospital 10 days ago and died today. There's concern obviously as to how many people he infected in his tobacconists shop in the week before he got ill.

Keepdistance · 28/03/2020 17:06

Making me angry because I didn't want me and mn to be right.
And cdc changing mind about masks too.
I just dont see why 'experts' thought they knew better than China who has been through this and sars.
Even if the masks just reduce viral load
But e.g. Here our food supply is compromised by lots of customers with no gloves or masks breathing on it.
Everyone off on non essential fun runs!
Tbh im convinced they wanted to run at this so we wouldnt be lagging behind as that would cause other issues with economy and panic.
Also I looked at the rates of blood types as they said A was more vulnerable. And Italy is pretty high. China was I think lower.

JemimaPuddleCat · 28/03/2020 17:11

Why are we still having so few people 'recovering'? Does anyone know what the testing is for seeing if someone has recovered from covid in the UK?

Anyone?
