Should we not be thinking of looking at what they are doing over there that is working and seeing if it would work in the UK, also?

Not as often as we want. It's not difficult to understand.

I’m pretty sure raven is in Germany and talking about the guidelines there. Maybe reign back the patronising tone a bit, hmm?

Happyadventurer · 25/03/2020 13:01

Apologies Raven. I didn't realise that you were in Germany. Too many people here (UK) don't think the rules apply to them that's why I was so angry.

ravenmum · 25/03/2020 13:01

Sorry, yes, I meant here in Germany. Here in Germany, staying indoors does mean taking the dog out 3 times a day and then going for a run.

Fantasiaa · 25/03/2020 13:01

@Bluntness100
Germany are not incorrectly recording deaths. Such a common thing from British people seeking to remove any blame or reason that may suggest the way Germany is handling this pandemic is better.

It’s a culmination of other factors such as healthcare system, the patient group etc

ravenmum · 25/03/2020 13:03

As I say, I'd be up shit creek (more or less literally) if I could only take the dog out once. I guess almost nobody in the UK has a dog but no garden.

cooldarkroom · 25/03/2020 13:31

In france they announced today that the health count did not include people in retirement homes, or at home.
Why ?

juliastone · 25/03/2020 13:34

Perhaps those living in Germany and Russia get in touch with other viruses from coronavirus group much more often (due to cold weather) and their body knows better how to attack this new virus...

diddl · 25/03/2020 13:40

If you look at worldometer, UK doesn't have that many more active cases than Germany has closed cases!

jobhunter7 · 25/03/2020 13:41

Other countries have adopted different methods in tackling this problem with some success.

That's because we are not testing anyone who is not an inpatient in hospital

" Here in Germany, staying indoors does mean taking the dog out 3 times a day and then going for a run."

And a bike ride don't forget-2 if one is to go shoppingWink

Not only do German's do as they are told, but I have heard they are also more conscious of being unwell than other nations and have a higher sickness absence rate compared with the UK.

Not going to work and spreading their germs may be a significant factor. We have a culture of presenteeism here and are encouraged to carry on as normal if it is "just a cold".

At this time I think the ITU beds is a red herring. Although the UK is rapidly reaching capacity, until now, there have been ITU beds available for those who need them.

ravenmum · 25/03/2020 14:25

One thing that did strike me was listening to an episode of Inside Health on Radio 4, in which it said that the NHS tries to save beds on intensive care for emergencies, so aims to "only" be at 80% capacity at most. They then said that in fact, many intensive care units were at almost 100% capacity anyway, before Coronavirus. The next day on the news I heard something on local German radio saying that intensive care beds were "already" at 80% capacity and Corona had only just begun.

(The Inside Health episode described how they were planning to use operating theatres as temporary IC units, as those already have basic respirators.)

Reginabambina · 25/03/2020 14:28

They are not testing more. I know someone over there who has tested positive. She only got a test because a friend arranged it for her.

hiddenmnetter · 25/03/2020 14:37

Sorry I haven't rtft because by the end of page 1 the same BS was being put out, that Germany is testing more. No, they are not. The only countries that have tested more than the UK are Italy, South Korea and maybe China (because we have no idea if figures from there are accurate).

ravenmum · 25/03/2020 14:41

See the figures I posted above at Wed 25-Mar-20 10:14:21 - Germany has tested roughly 4.4 times more than the UK according to official figures.

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 25/03/2020 14:42

The government has said many times that it is not a good thing to make comparisons wirh statistics in other countries for mamy reasons, record and data methods included. It does not help us in any way

ravenmum · 25/03/2020 14:44

Whose government, the UK?

MarshaBradyo · 25/03/2020 14:46

I did think well they would say that. However we can’t really compare with the West very meaningfully now. But at the end of it all it might be quite stark to do it (hopefully not).

jobhunter7 · 25/03/2020 14:57

"The government has said many times that it is not a good thing to make comparisons with statistics in other countries for many reasons, record and data methods included. It does not help us in any way."

I should think it would almost certainly would help. This crisis has raging for many more weeks in Asia. Clearly bad decisions were made in Wuhan, but they are now lifting some of their restrictions... and obviously statistics will be measured differently from country to country and there are other factors (age of the population, how many people smoke...) and how honest other governments are being... but the lockdown in Wuhan was a pretty radical move in the eyes of the WHO... so perhaps we should be seeing if we could steal a few of their ideas... rather than just hoping things will just work out...

hidden that link doesn't even include Germany. And it's from two weeks ago.

If we're just sharing anecdotes, I know several people who have been tested here with no problems.

TeaAddict235 · 25/03/2020 15:31

Agree @dreamingbohemian,
I have lived in France too and now am in Deutschland, I feel really sad and sorry how the UK government have let the NHS go to rot, while so many of the top politicians having Swiss or Eu addresses suspiciously

My Dsis is a Doctor for the NHS, A&E, and I feel sorry for her, but she is convinced that the rest of Europe have the wrong approach. She had German colleagues in the past who worked as weekend locums in her A&E department, and then would live the good life during the week back in Germany. Confused (but that's another thread completely, oops)

dreamingbohemian · 25/03/2020 15:37

Glad you agree, Tea. I hope your sister is coping ok! What a difficult time it must be for everyone.

tryingtoprep · 25/03/2020 15:43

Is it possible that Germany has a better supply of the drugs that might help? They're still undergoing trials but some countries are using them as treatment without waiting for trial results. There's apparently a shortage of these drugs but I wouldn't be surprised if Germany, having an excellent healthcare system, organised themselves quicker than other places (including the UK).
