Should we not be thinking of looking at what they are doing over there that is working and seeing if it would work in the UK, also?

Numerous comparative studies have been published annually you only need to read them. Essentially, Germany funds their health system more than the U.K. does so they have more ICU beds per capita for example. It also has free education for nurses and doctors.

PicsInRed · 25/03/2020 09:23

Reportedly, what they are doing that is "working" is:

  1. Not testing as much;
  2. Registering deaths as being due to any other comorbidity they can possibly identify in the patient. So the person with a heart condition who contracted coronavirus and eventually went into respiratory arrest and then cardiac arrest didn't die of coronavirus, they died of a heart attack related to their heart condtion.

Allegedly, this is what they are doing.

I think we should stick with our own reporting.

jobhunter7 · 25/03/2020 09:32

This is of course true - people bend statistics and figures...

Scientists are already sharing information and continually reassessing. Every country has to act slightly differently depending on what best fits their population.

goldpartyhat · 25/03/2020 09:33

I've heard the same as @PicsInRed says.

TooGood2BeTrue · 25/03/2020 09:34

@PicsinRed Can you provide a reputable source that supports this claim, please?

ravenmum · 25/03/2020 09:35

So the person with a heart condition who contracted coronavirus and eventually went into respiratory arrest and then cardiac arrest didn't die of coronavirus, they died of a heart attack related to their heart condtion.
This is simply not true.

MarshaBradyo · 25/03/2020 09:36

Pics they are testing more? You can get a home test.

And the latter has refuted on here, have you a link?

Absentwomen · 25/03/2020 09:38

Agree with PP here on Germany.

Where there are lower numbers of deaths, it is always worth examining findings but comparative study samples would struggle to be achieved because of different socio economic factors as Plan has upthread has referenced. (More nurses, free training etc)

On checking the BBC's confirmed cases in your area tool, there are NO confirmed cases in the City of London in a population of approx 1800 people. Looking closer to home, would be a start. Why has Cumbria a high percentage of confirmed cases in a population c 500K... ??? Are they doing more testing in Cumbria? Or is it that it is a vast area with a lot of people that have existing conditions?

I'm stuck on City of London and no confirmed cases. I think that's something to look at deeper.

ravenmum · 25/03/2020 09:38

Reports of the death figures from Coronavirus in Germany include any underlying medical issues that contributed to the people's death. If their other medical conditions were being taken as the cause of death, instead of Coronavirus, then the only ones being reported would be those with no other medical conditions.

Cornettoninja · 25/03/2020 09:40

I’ve read (unfortunately not saved any sources) that Germany are set up better for respiratory illnesses and have more respirators and ICU beds and trained medical staff. I’m not sure it would be realistic to emulate that at the moment.

Incidentally lack of respirators has been highlighted to the government in emergency scenario drills for a number of years which makes sense when you think they would have been practicing to deal with terrorist attacks which would have involved scenarios for chemical attacks.

womaninatightspot · 25/03/2020 09:40

I've heard that Pics also the reason Italy's rate is so high is that all deaths where the person has corona are attributed to corona even if cause of death was another condition.

LimpidPools · 25/03/2020 09:41

We've all heard what PicsInRed said, but it isn't true. The German government has specifically denied it.

Likewise, there is much more testing happening in Germany than the UK.

The healthcare system is hugely better funded. It helps.

ravenmum · 25/03/2020 09:41

Germany confirmed cases 33,952 - deaths 171
UK confirmed cases 8,077 - deaths 422
interaktiv.waz.de/corona-virus-karte-infektionen-deutschland-weltweit/

Logically, the UK must be testing a lot less than Germany, not more.

MummyPop00 · 25/03/2020 09:43

If what people are alleging re: Germany is correct, then Germany should move in line with everybody else, as skewed statistics aren’t helpful.

That said, what are Japan doing?

Jourdain11 · 25/03/2020 09:46

I did wonder if they are counting in the same way. Not fiddling the figures, but just doing what pps said.

Jourdain11 · 25/03/2020 09:47

@MummyPop00 I think up till now Japan have been like OLYMPICS OLYMPICS OLYMPICS!!!

Oceans12isCrap · 25/03/2020 09:48

They’re not - it’s the fact they’re testing more.

AnotherMurkyDay · 25/03/2020 09:48

Better hospital/healthcare provision
More of the cases have been amongst younger people who generally fair better
More testing
More effective case tracing initially

They are warning their current numbers might not be representative once more vulnerable members get the virus.

In the Washington post:

www.washingtonpost.com/world/europe/germany-coronavirus-death-rate/2020/03/24/76ce18e4-6d05-11ea-a156-0048b62cdb51_story.html

They are not reporting deaths differently AFAIK. At least I have not been able to find any evidence of that, just a circulating rumour. There have been lots of people clarifying that Germany are NOT reporting deaths differently. There's no way for me to know for absolutely certain but it seems very unlikely.

ravenmum · 25/03/2020 09:49

"While the US and UK have about 2 beds per 1,000 people, Germany, by comparison has 6, while Japan has 7.8, according to the OECD. "
www.ft.com/content/effd0dae-655f-11ea-b3f3-fe4680ea68b5

The UK is heavily underfunded. The health insurance system in Germany is totally different and very expensive.

AnotherMurkyDay · 25/03/2020 09:49

As the WHO have said: we need to TEST TEST TEST

Taciturn · 25/03/2020 09:50

It to do with the way they record CV deaths

If someone has another condition, in Germany it is not (necessarily) recorded as a CV19 death unless it is believed to be the principal cause.

On the other hand we record anyone who tests positive with CV19 within the CV19 death statistics regardless of what the principal cause of death was.

MarshaBradyo · 25/03/2020 09:50

It makes sense they are testing more if you think it through

In fact this could be the reason for a better numbers atm

Alialialiali · 25/03/2020 09:50

Germans are testing EVERYONE, they're doing like 30k tests a day and have the capacity, allegedly of going up to 160k tests a day.

So they're catching more people who have the virus and not developing severe symptoms. Whereas we're testing only when people get ADMITTED to ICU..... so like... I would say it's proof that the virus is not very dangerous to people without underlying conditions.
