And I shall say it again. We are allowed out once a day for fresh air

It's like there is competitive isolation or folk who think they know better than government guidelines.

OP posts:
Jux · 24/03/2020 19:31

One of our local shop keepers had a customer who had said he walked to the shop, bought what he needed and walked home. That was his shopping trip and his exercise for the day!

We have done the same today. We tend to buy what we need today and let tomorrow look after itself. I suppose we're not supposed to do that any more?

Thekindofwindowsfaceslookinat · 24/03/2020 19:31

Some of things i'm reading are ridiculous - i'm allowed to go out and tend to my allotment. Leave your bloody cabbages to die unless you potentially want one of your relatives to end up stored at your local ice rink

This comment does really sum up all the nasty, stupid, one-eyed comments. No thought. Zero critical thinking. A salivating, schlock horror scenario. And absolutely wrong.

Yes. Let's let fresh, useful food wither and die rather than safely growing and gathering it to feed families. Let THAT food die, then go and queue up in a supermarket, next to 200 other people, to fight someone for a pack of instant noodles. Genius.

Thankfully, the government doesn't agree with you.

BeijingBikini · 24/03/2020 19:31

Exactly, it's competitive misery on here.

Nikhedonia · 24/03/2020 19:31

Is competitive isolation becoming the new MN competitive under eating?

The mystical isolation others are claiming to do will be the MN chicken, too. I imagine thru roasted one of those 6 weeks ago and are still living off it, so have had no need to leave the house.

Nikhedonia · 24/03/2020 19:32

*they

ilovecakeandwine · 24/03/2020 19:34

We should be sticking together not point out oh look as such and such walking again already been out in the car twice today and twice yesterday she is so selfish. They don't know that the selfish one is shopping for relatives / collecting medical supplies / has to go into work as is a key worker . Not everyone will stay home all day every day for 3 weeks does not make them selfish .
The media aren't helping people I mean they've found a few people that are not observing are stupid/ selfish but the rest of us are .

Iwalkinmyclothing · 24/03/2020 19:34

Hang on, people are encouraging others not to tend to their allotments and to leave food to die in the ground? Really? That's just silly.

You don't need to get out for fresh air.

People going out only increases contacts, and passes on the idea that life is as normal.

There is no, or little risk if you live in a house, and can get in or out without contact, but for people in cities, living in appartments, going through the communal areas leaves you at risk of infection.

If you go out, you may end up seeing friends and being closer than you should for your health.
There's the temptation to pop in to grab something from the shop, etc.
Unless you really need the exercise, just stay at home.

Teateaandmoretea · 24/03/2020 19:35

Leave your bloody cabbages to die unless you potentially want one of your relatives to end up stored at your local ice rink

I imagine that anything to avoid supermarkets like growing own veg is only good.

I think though that there are lots of people on MN who suffer from anxiety unfortunately and this is impacting on what they post Sad

Teateaandmoretea · 24/03/2020 19:36

@lweji let people use the official recommendations not your made up ones.

1forsorrow · 24/03/2020 19:38

Driving somewhere to do your exercise isnt an essential journey as you can just step out your front door and walk/run/cycle. The guy Isadora quoted said the police would be expected to use their commonsense as a short drive to walk somewhere quiet was OK.

GinnyStrupac · 24/03/2020 19:38

I think there are faults at the extremes of both sides of the argument. We can debate, disagree, and share information without resorting to abuse. This is especially important when so many of us are genuinely and deeply concerned about our families, our friends, our essential workers, our neighbours and ourselves, especially those who are already vulnerable.

MN Hyacinths

The Lady Of The House Speaking. Of course I insist that my naice milkperson returns my very own bottles to me every morning, so I shall be ok.

Sadly my candlelight suppers have had to be cancelled for the foreseeable future.

I am handling Richard with my marigolds, but nothing new there.

Lweji · 24/03/2020 19:38

Indeed. Every time you go to the shop, you risk infecting yourself, the shop keeper and other customers. Much better to do all your shopping in one go at least each week. You reduce the likelihood of being part of a transmission chain by 6/7. If you can do it every 2 weeks, then you reduce it by 13/14.
Think about it.

Roselilly36 · 24/03/2020 19:39

Your post is very patronising OP. I don’t think I am holier than thou, the fact remains I fall into a high risk group. I would prefer to stay at home and sit in the garden for fresh air than face the risk of contracting CV.

ilovecakeandwine · 24/03/2020 19:39

You don't need to get out for fresh air
Your right we won't die if we don't exercise for 3 weeks but Boris has said it's safe to do so . Why are you making your own rules up ?

Lweji · 24/03/2020 19:40

@lweji let people use the official recommendations not your made up ones.

It's not made up ones.
You can follow the UK's government recommendations to the letter, or you can do your best to protect yourself and others.

Teateaandmoretea · 24/03/2020 19:41

Yes it is made up ones Hmm

Rubyroost · 24/03/2020 19:42

There's some very strange misinterpretations on here. You are not supposed to go out twice a day, once for shops and once for exercise. And there's not loads of holier than thou people. There's sensible people who are willing to make very difficult, but necessary changes in order to reduce this thing spreading and so not putting pressure on the nhs. Then there's these idiots who are going out far too often and spreading the virus. It's these idiots that will be wanting a ventilator when there's none left. Of course it's bloody difficult, but there's lives at stake here. I'm currently on maternity leave with a toddler and a newborn. But I'm staying in and having a walk near the house or going in the garden once a day and my partner is shopping once a week... Panic buying permitting.

Devaki · 24/03/2020 19:43

It’s at a time like this when I’m thankful for my garden - even if it is unkempt and the bane of my life. We don’t actually ‘have’ to go anywhere. We have enough space to do do what we like. I do feel for people who live in flats.

Lweji · 24/03/2020 19:43

Your right we won't die if we don't exercise for 3 weeks but Boris has said it's safe to do so

Ok.
I'm a biologist and work on molecular epidemiology of infectious diseases. I have been following all the advice from different countries and most of the data on transmission by the WHO, as well as papers.
Boris is a politician who has royally screwed it up and had to back track very quickly on his initial policy towards COVID.

You trust who you want.

Verb3naSantos · 24/03/2020 19:44

Er no you’re not tempted to pop in the shop or see friends when out for daily exercise. You have no choice it’s not allowed. Exercise is.

PertEllaTitsahoy · 24/03/2020 19:44

The guy Isadora quoted said the police would be expected to use their commonsense as a short drive to walk somewhere quiet was OK.

Yes, I've not once said that people shouldn't drive somewhere to get their exercise. All I said was that it wasnt essential to do so as you can exercise anywhere.

I made it quite clear that I didnt care that people went somewhere to do their exercise but they were doing it as a preference. Just like going down the allotment is a preference.

Why that turned out to be so controversial is beyond me. Ah well 🤷‍♀️

SorrelBlackbeak · 24/03/2020 19:45

@Roselily36 - no one is saying people have to go out. If you are able to stay at home and happy to do so, that's great.

However, other people are able to make their own decisions about the level of exposure they feel comfortable with, provided it is within the government guidance and it not up to mumsnetters or people on Facebook or whatever else to police going outside for exercise or essential shopping within those limits.

Alsohuman · 24/03/2020 19:45

Thank goodness I opened this thread, I was beginning to think all common sense had departed. The insanity that’s pervaded MN today is unreal.
