It's like there is competitive isolation or folk who think they know better than government guidelines.

OP posts:
PertEllaTitsahoy · 24/03/2020 18:45

What's 0.05% of 70 million? Loads of people either way.

ThePluckOfTheCoward · 24/03/2020 18:45

It's like competitive wankery on this site at the moment, it's fucking tedious. So true.

WhenYouveAFirstInEnglish · 24/03/2020 18:46

Thank goodness for some of the replies on this post. The disgusting way people have been speaking to others on here the last week or so has really been getting to me. I am fairly close to deleting my profile which would be a shame because I’ve had a lot from here over the years. But the absolute horrible way some people have entered the “I’m considerably more locked down than you” olympics has pretty much ruined it.

Be sensible and safe. The guidelines exist to minimise your contact with other people. You can walk round all day if you don’t see anyone and stay 2m away from anyone you do briefly pass. You will not be risking the NHS, or fucking stupid, or ignorant, or selfishly taking up the only ventilator in the village. And also please can the sensible people who understand the point of the lockdown stop asking the over zealous Stalinist informers about whether they can do perfectly reasonable things like walk a few minutes to a private field twice a day because it’s contributing to the fuck-awful atmosphere on here. Risk asses it yourself and remember you cannot please these people. You can only look at yourself in the mirror and feel comfortable with your own actions.

HowIrresponsible · 24/03/2020 18:46

Sorry folks people aren't listening.

My job is on the list of those permitted to go to work.

In a car and from Kennington right down to beyond Balham...there are people everywhere.

Thisismynewname123 · 24/03/2020 18:46

@Cinammoncake my husband regularly goes for a 2-3 hour solo bike ride, to make up for missing his regular cycle commute. I just looked into this thread to see if that would be considered unreasonable.

vegas888 · 24/03/2020 18:47

Probably still less than the people who feel suicidal after losing their homes, jobs and way of life

PertEllaTitsahoy · 24/03/2020 18:48

Thing is, no one can actually say as it depends on how many other people are doing the same thing. If he goes for a bike ride and meets no one, great. If he ends up in the platoon not so great.

LuluJakey1 · 24/03/2020 18:48

Tabbymumz And that is my point - he should have limited it to 2 adults out at any time together whether there are more in the household or not. In Germany it is 2 adults limit. It is clear, the same for everyone and not open to manipulation by groups of friends. It is also less of a 'group' which is much better for distancing.

donquixotedelamancha · 24/03/2020 18:50

New model from Oxford university suggest Corona had already infected half of UK and it's as fatal as a cold. Only 1 in 1000 need hospitalisation. Mortality probably 0.05%.

Yeah, I saw that. I'm really sceptical about it. South Korea were testing almost everyone and have a very young population. Still they were getting a death rate of towards 1%.

Italy have tested more than us. A lot of the people with some possible symptoms hadn't had the coronavirus, just some type of cold/flu virus. The deaths in Italy are mostly in the north, and particularly in a few cities, so it seems unlikely that the real death rate is so low.

karala · 24/03/2020 18:50

thank you OP for much needed sanity

Sockwomble · 24/03/2020 18:50

I got told off last night for daring to suggest that going for an early morning run and then taking my disabled teenager out for a walk was ok. Even though the rules say you are allowed to leave your house to care for someone vulnerable. Be kind didn't last long.

eaglejulesk · 24/03/2020 18:51

So no, you are not allowed out once a day for "fresh air".

What - isn't going for a run, walk or cycle going out for "fresh air" ????

Cinammoncake · 24/03/2020 18:51

thisismynewname fair enough, just saying 2-3 hrs exercise a day is surely unusual for most people? Quite an eye opener really how much exercise some people do.

HopelessLayout · 24/03/2020 18:52

No, "fresh air" is not a synonym for "exercise". Does that really need to be stated? (Rhetorical question.)

BronwenFrideswide · 24/03/2020 18:53

I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again. Some people are revelling in this, taking some kind of masochistic pleasure. It’s like the most exciting thing that’s ever happened to them and now they get to feel important by telling people how stupid/illiterate/awful they are.

But some folk, I sense, just revel in being holier than thou. Enjoy the thought of everyone being locked down and living in a policed country because their own lives are pretty locked down anyway

Agree. I was saying this to DH earlier on. You can tell the people who would have revelled in being the Blockwarten in Nazi Germany.

At last, some posters making observations I can agree with. Some people on here are positively chomping at the bit for a full martial law lock down with the army on the streets enforcing it with the business end of a semi-automatic rifle. They will also be the people who gleefully curtain twitch and report anyone they deem to be not co-operating whilst chanting their saving lives mantra, they missed their calling they would have been perfectly at home under the Stasi in East Germany.

SarahInAccounts · 24/03/2020 18:54

@Nikhedonia

It's like competitive wankery on this site at the moment, it's fucking tedious.

Sums it up perfectly.

also -
8So many people are being total wankers and making up their own rules: "Well you shouldn't be outside at ALL, I have 7 kids and we've managed to stay indoors for 400 days, you are all just STUPID and SELFISH and everytime you step outside, someone's Grandma drops dead. If you want fresh air, open the trickle vent in your windows".*

Laughable at times.

Nikhedonia · 24/03/2020 18:54

ive been on mn for 11 years and i've never seen it this savage

I've been here a similar length of time and I'd agree. This has always been the kind of forum which has attracted a certain type of poster who is just keen to argue regardless of the topic, but at the minute the number of posters showing such a lack of empathy and a resistance to engage their brain is like nothing I've seen before.

The glee from posters on a thread last night where there were parents with shared custody worrying that the lockdown would mean they weren't seeing their children was disturbing.

vegas888 · 24/03/2020 18:54

So we send the world into a massive recession/depression, jobs lost, people imprisoned in their homes? Why aren’t there tests for people and those that are clear can go back to work.

PertEllaTitsahoy · 24/03/2020 18:55

Why aren’t there tests for people and those that are clear can go back to work.

I dont know, why aren't there?

SleepingStandingUp · 24/03/2020 18:56

Stupid question alart.

I'm allowed to walk around the block, where I'll meet no one or we'll move apart. I can walk through the park to do the same. We accept I won't catch it from breathing air.

If I'm in the shielded group, I'm not allowed out to not meet anyone and breathe in air which isn't contaminated

can anyone explain why?

GinnyStrupac · 24/03/2020 18:57

You are allowed to do that under the current restrictions, @Sockwomble because you are providing care to a vulnerable person and also enabling them to get their allowed exercise. Carers also need their own exercise too, for physical and mental wellbeing, where possible.

Here's a bit of kindness for you Flowers

Sockwomble · 24/03/2020 18:57

2 adults limit would not work in some families where there is an adult needing a lot of support - unless carers are excluded from the rule.

vegas888 · 24/03/2020 18:57

Meanwhile the economy crumbles 🙄🙄get testing and get those who want to work back to work.

PertEllaTitsahoy · 24/03/2020 18:57

How do you know you want meet anyone? I think that's the reasoning

VivaLeBeaver · 24/03/2020 18:58

I’m all for sticking to the rules and today have been out once to walk the dog. At 6am and didn’t see anyone.

I’m very rural and know I could have gone for a bike ride this afternoon and not seen anyone.

But I stuck to the rules. Then I see hundreds of people packed on tubes, trains, etc. Builders milling about next to each other.

And it does irritate me that I’m not “allowed” for a solitary bike ride when that’s going on.
