Morning all.
Oh @ofwarren, fingers crossed it's seasonal lurgy lovely. Brew

Was awol for most of yesterday as busy with online lessons. On that front things seem very much to be settling into a rhythm now.

Our electric bill payments being put on hold was about the only thing I understood from the 2 hour or so PM speech yesterday. Controls much more rigorous now, one of my final year kids went to throw the rubbish out on Sunday and stood next to his house for 10 mins afterwards and was fined by the police for not having his document with him and dp saw 2 being fined on his way to the supermarket for having more than one person in the car.

AvocadoOwl · 26/03/2020 07:36

Oh ofwarren what a worry!

Gammeldragz · 26/03/2020 07:39

Oh no @ofwarren Flowers and you've been so careful!

Donald J Trump @realdonaldtrump
The LameStream Media is the dominant force in trying to get me to keep our Country closed as long as possible in the hope that it will be detrimental to my election success. The real people want to get back to work ASAP. We will be stronger than ever before!

Meanwhile in NYC

George Takei @georgetakei
They reported 199 total deaths in NYC at 10am. By 6pm, it was 280 deaths. That's 81 deaths in 8 hours, or a death every 6 minutes.

Mount Sinai Health System @mountsinainyc
We are deeply saddened by the passing of a beloved member of our nursing staff. Today, we lost another hero - a compassionate colleague, friend and selfless caregiver.

Eric Feigl-Ding @drericding
My god - New York is surpassing every other epicenter hotspot - now on track to double up every day. Slowing it down to doubling every 2 days would be actually improvement right now. #COVID19

@ofwarren hoping it is just a seasonal bug. Flowers

woodencoffeetable · 26/03/2020 07:48

bbc health check podcast is really interesting on the spread of disease in south africa and potential treatment options.

middleager · 26/03/2020 07:51

I'm still feeling nervous about the repurcussions of all those people who visited their mothers on Sunday and who went for seaside daytrips and picnics in the park.

I worry we'll see a spike then and it will snowball.

Random18 · 26/03/2020 07:55

Thanks Bluntness

remdesivir which has been mentioned was registered as an orphan drug in USA this week. Essentially meaning it wouldn't be widely available and wouldn't be low cost.

Although I did see something about there being a backlash so it may be rescinded.

Naomi O'Leary @naomioreally
^Ireland’s ability to treat coronavirus patients in intensive care could be the quickest to be overwhelmed in the EU, health agency @ECDC_EU has warned.
The next most vulnerable are the UK & NL.
It warns of 'Hubei' level outbreaks across Europe within weeks^

Current prediction: "about half of all EU/EEA countries will reach a rate of 100 cases per 100,000 population (the prevalence in Hubei province at the peak of the epidemic) by the end of March, with the remaining countries reaching that levelby mid-April"

Just listening to R4

Robert Peston @peston

What do people think about buying things online? I don’t want couriers forced to work but I don’t know if they/the economy might welcome it.

It’s nothing important.

Bluntness100 · 26/03/2020 08:16

The who launched their solidarity fund last Wednesday I think it was, they have about 165 million for research, according to their recent press conference, scientific communities and countries are working together globally to find a solution and sharing results.

TheRoyalTinker · 26/03/2020 08:17

@ofwarren Poor thing. After all that carefulness also. Hope you are feeling better soon. If you have some I'd revommend eucalyptus oil in a base carrier such as coconut oil - a good amount on chest when you lie down. Get well soon x x

MarshaBradyo · 26/03/2020 08:18

Bluntness is the UK part of the solidarity group do you know?

I think I saw a list but it is old now. Also haven’t done more reading on it to see how it all works

RedToothBrush · 26/03/2020 08:20

Tom Newton Dunn @tnewtondunn
Excl: Self-employed will have to wait until end of May to get emergency wages from the government. Also;
* Money only for low and medium earners, capped at around the £30k p/a median wage
* benchmark to be January’s tax return for the last financial year
* scheme won’t offer parity with bailout of 80% of the wages of employees, but based on Rishi Sunak’s principle of “fairness”
* Treasury fear Boris Johnson “talked up” the offer too much in Commons today and higher earners will be disappointed.

MarshaBradyo · 26/03/2020 08:20

Actually the fund might be different to what I saw. Going to have a read.

Bluntness100 · 26/03/2020 08:21

Yes, the Uk is part of it and the money has come from the international development Fund. The prime minister announced it a few days ago.

MarshaBradyo · 26/03/2020 08:22

Great. The list I saw was last week or so. Pleased to hear it

Janemarpling · 26/03/2020 08:24

Of warren. I am so sorry. Are there many confirmed cases in your area?

Not that we know for sure.

It's a horrible feeling.

IronNeonClasp · 26/03/2020 08:29

It's like my friends have had an awakening sending scaremongering videos etc this am.

Anyone else?

Where have you been for two months like?

Neededtonamechangeforthis · 26/03/2020 08:30

Oh ofwarren, I'm really sorry to hear that. Not only for you being Ill but you must be out of your mind with worry for your DC.

What do people think about buying things online? I don’t want couriers forced to work but I don’t know if they/the economy might welcome it.

We have acquaintances who we are pretty friendly with who run a small business locally. They only took it over in November. They have been forced to close.

However they have offered home delivery as a way to keep the business afloat and to keep a roof over their heads.

They are self employed so as yet have no idea how they are going to keep going since the government hasn't offered support.

By the look of social media lots of locals are trying to help by placing an order.

They own the business and they are doing all the deliveries themselves. Strictly do not answer the door.

My feeling is it largely depends on the situation and the environment someone is working in.

But there is a reality here that people need food on table and there are people falling through cracks of government support who arent getting anything.

The reality then is these people will turn to food banks - and a community who are mixing to provide, supply and distribute that food aid.

So you aren't winning either way if you boycott all online suppliers and there are a greater number struggling financially as a result of that.

Rock meet hard place.
