My father in law does all his shopping at the off licence. Much safer for him than supermarkets at the minute as there's usually no more than one other person in the shop.

Or do you mean off licences that only sell alcohol? Ours does all sorts.

Bluntness100 · 25/03/2020 18:26

Does anyone know today’s new cases and deaths in England, it seems no numbers yet?

SistemaAddict · 25/03/2020 18:27

I was thinking of places like Bargain Booze. They aren't essential. I've never seen an off license sell anything other than alcohol, soft drink, cigarettes and tobacco. They probably sell vaping stuff now too. Whereabouts are you?

CricketCrocket · 25/03/2020 18:28

Maybe someone at PHE forgot to press the update button before they all went home.

Tequilamockinbird · 25/03/2020 18:28

Today's new cases for the UK seem really low compared to yesterday - 187 v 1427.

Does this suggest a turning point, or am I deluded and we just haven't declared them all yet?

MarshaBradyo · 25/03/2020 18:28

Off license to me means food too. In London. I don’t think I’ve seen just alcohol.

ilovecakeandwine · 25/03/2020 18:28

@Bercows I don't know 3 days at home with the family and I'm reaching for the gin.
I've read that alcohol is running low in supermarkets . I work in the alcohol industry and as you can imagine it's impacted massively. I don't think the worlds gone mad it's supply and demand.

MarshaBradyo · 25/03/2020 18:28

Licence?

Imerc · 25/03/2020 18:28

OK but quartz I am not about to subscribe financial Times to read that

defthand · 25/03/2020 18:29

England has not reported its numbers yet.

Frankiecandle · 25/03/2020 18:29

The Offies around here sell food too.

Quartz2208 · 25/03/2020 18:31

Sorry it let me answering questions. Basically it was positive about the immune response

Imerc please back up what you are saying you can throw such scary statements out without backing them up with scientific proof

Horehound · 25/03/2020 18:32

@Imerc if you Google "coronavirus kills off part off immune system" literally every single result shows the opposite.

...

Nowortomorrowmaybe · 25/03/2020 18:33

Off licence to me means a shop selling mostly alcohol, with soft drinks and confectionery too.

A small shop selling that and food too means corner shop to me!

Why haven't the UK updated their death toll today? Its usually done by 5.30

ClashCityRocker · 25/03/2020 18:34

Oh I agree the likes of bargain booze aren't essential.

I'm in York and all our local offies have a reasonable selection of food - other than bargain booze! They're more like small convenience stores really. I'm not saying that my father in law has the healthiest or most varied of diets, but there is enough to feasibly feed yourself on.

Imerc · 25/03/2020 18:34

Google is now restricting the Internet though

Derbygerbil · 25/03/2020 18:39

@Tequilamockinbird

Only Scotland, Wales and NI have “declared” so far. Only us and USA to fully post results today I think.

Teapotdespot · 25/03/2020 18:39

@imerc did you actually just suggest Google is ‘restricting the internet’? What utter, utter bollocks.

Quite apart form the fact that’s completely impossible (I work in the search field), it’s also the stuff of back web fever dreams.

The reason you can’t find anything about your outlandish claims is because they originate from websites with absolutely no authority what so ever. Generally, if it appears beyond the second page of news results it’s either fake news or the product of an unsubstantiated blog somewhere. HTH.

Imerc · 25/03/2020 18:42

Teapotdespot I was on Google homepage. A link said changes to something and I clicked it. It's to stop misinformation about the virus, fake news, and Google will be removing search results and YouTube videos

Imerc · 25/03/2020 18:43

I've been reading research for months. medrxviv is one site that you don't need to work or study medicine to access

Quartz2208 · 25/03/2020 18:44

So rather than going with the fact its unsubstaniated fake news you have decided it is true and that it has been removed because its a conspriacy that we are all going to get this and be seriously affected?

Imerc · 25/03/2020 18:46

No I was being silly

Imerc · 25/03/2020 18:49

If you look at studies on patients usually will say something about immune depletion. I justbl think that's really weird

Rinoachicken · 25/03/2020 18:49
Hmm
justchecking1 · 25/03/2020 18:50

"Only go outside for food, health reasons or work (where this absolutely cannot be done from home)"

Have they removed the hour of exercise? Or does this come under health reasons? My interpretation would be health reasons would only be visiting a doctor or pharmacist, but can see how it could be twisted.

WRT off licenses being essential, I have seen more people in A&E this week with acute alcohol withdrawal than I have in the last few months! Alcohol is genuinely a life or death thing hit some people, DTs can kill you. We really need to remember that there are people on the fringe of society who will be affected by this in unexpected and unpredictable ways
