Its not gone down on todays released statistics (although could very well have happened afterwards) so would be on tomorrows

It always had hit outliers though - we notice and comment on them so they are definitely not the norm. Sad still

Angryrant55 · 24/03/2020 22:35

John Stevens - 'Incredibly sad news: A nurse at a London hospital took her own life at work yesterday. She was in her 20s.'

Angryrant55 · 24/03/2020 23:14

BNO Newsroom -'Over the past 24 hours, Spain has reported nearly 7,000 new cases of coronavirus and 680 new deaths, raising the total to 42,058 cases and 2,991 dead.'

Poor lady.

I do think nurses will be very hard to recruit after this, and HCPs in general.

RedToothBrush · 24/03/2020 23:17

John Stevens @johnstevens
King's College Hospital said: "A member of staff was found unresponsive at the hospital yesterday. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, they sadly died. We are offering support to their family at this difficult time and would ask that their privacy is respected."

EmeraldShamrock · 24/03/2020 23:32

@RedToothBrush So sad. Sad Will life ever be the same.

IronNeonClasp · 24/03/2020 23:33

This thread moves so fast I haven't even thanks OP for thread Grin All caught up and managed to avoid Aljazeera and Sky news today so that's good (for me). Think it's why I had a nightmare overdid the input.
Kids and I went for a walk it was a stunning day and went to the shop for essential items. Good to report that it was dead really.
Spoke to my mate in the states. Doesn't seem to be taking COVID very seriously so not sure if they are downplaying it out there? Didn't want to scare her but she seemed a bit vacant with it all on a v wealthy estate but kids/teens all hanging around together. Sleep tidy..

Imerc · 24/03/2020 23:38

Someone said a few threads back that people can't properly assess risk. I cannot assess risk. It could look like I was hysterical but it was between that and no everything will be fine, now I've waited too long. How could I have thought that

Angryrant55 · 25/03/2020 00:26

Aaron Rupar - 'Trump on why he picked Easter as the day he wants to end strict social distancing and reopen American businesses: "Easter is a very special day for me ... Easter Sunday, and you'll have packed churches all over our country." '

defthand · 25/03/2020 02:03

FMD. Trump. 😑

Nmagain · 25/03/2020 02:55

Looks like a second wave in Singapore. This is why lockdown too early is a bad idea just like our experts warned

Calmonthesurfacebut · 25/03/2020 07:07

Morning. Day 8 today here, still tired. If I lived on my own, technically I would be able to go out now! DH is a day behind me though. I got a click and collect slot. Have to drive 20 mins - it was the nearest place, so we will have proper milk! I can’t believe how excited I was, I’d been checking every 20 mins. I didn’t order loads, just a normal shop. I’ve written a note to just ask them to place in the boot! So no contact. I will wear my blue gloves, which when I bought them, thought I was being OTT!

I have lots of work to do, working from home, I can’t keep up, which is weird as I am self employed and zero hours, normally struggling for work.

Did the lady in Barbados get home. I believe most flights stop tonight.

This is an interesting read

Huge queues for Universal Credit online applications due to coronavirus surge
Online queues in the tens of thousands are hindering emergency applications for Universal Credit, with the Gov.uk Verify identity verification system becoming a particular bottleneck

One person reported being told they were number 35,000 in a queue to have their identity verified, with the wait declining by only 1200 people in two hours.

And

One way to gauge the increase in demand is through the number of people setting up Verify accounts. In the week from 9 to 15 March, about 36,000 Verify registrations were completed – a figure that has been consistent for several weeks. Verify is also used for a range of other government services, not only UC.

However, between 16 and 22 March, Verify received 118,416 new sign-ups - an increase of over 82,000. The number of people attempting to claim UC online is likely to be significantly higher, because only 35% of UC claimants are able to successfully create a Verify account

Verify uses digital information such as passports, driving licences and credit ratings to establish whether or not an applicant is who they say they are. Because many UC claimants do not have a sufficient digital footprint, their Verify registration is rejected.

DWP is already moving 10,000 existing staff to focus on processing new claims, and is limiting access to jobcentres to only the most vulnerable claimants

Just saw on TV news that Excel is being kitted out with beds and oxygen.

whatdayisitandotherquestions · 25/03/2020 08:28

Terrifying article on the incompetence of our Government's planning. They knew a flu-type virus pandemic would leave us so short of ventilators thousands would die. But they did nothing about it.

LeeMiller · 25/03/2020 08:30

@Nmagain but aren't several smaller waves better than one big one? In terms of reducing pressure on the healthcare system, more time to train staff, equip hospitals and staff, trial antivirals etc? I can't see what delaying achieves?

SistemaAddict · 25/03/2020 08:35

Morning all. I think I'm on day 21 of a tight chest and not feeling right. My chest does normally take a long time to get back to normal though.

I've just seen a council worker in his official vehicle go into someone's house with a shopping bag. No just leaving it on the step. Pointy brown shoes has gone off and is in and out regularly. It's a joke.

middleager · 25/03/2020 08:38

I read that too what
It makes my blood boil and my heart ache with sadness over the waste and devastation.

Covid-19: doctors are given new guidelines on when to admit patients to critical care

The guideline on critical care1 says that “irrespective of covid-19 status” all patients on admission to hospital should continue to be assessed for frailty.

For patients with confirmed covid-19, the guideline says the decision to admit a patient to critical care should be based on “taking into account the likelihood that a person will recover from their critical care admission to an outcome that is acceptable to them.”

And

NICE’s new rapid guideline on treating patients with cancer advises taking into account the level of immunosuppression associated with treatments and cancer types, capacity and resource matters, and “balancing the risk of cancer not being treated optimally with the risk of the patient being immunosuppressed and becoming seriously ill from covid-19.”

And

Patients under kidney dialysis who are suspected of having covid-19 should be assessed to see if their treatment should be delayed until their test results are known, the third rapid guideline4 says. NICE also recommends checking whether current outpatient transport providers are prepared to provide services to patients with confirmed covid-19 and, if not, whether alternatives are available.

The first point here talks about something that hasn't really been mentioned: surviving covid-19 but having very serious long term health conditions. This is definitely something that's being overlooked.

The second and third points may affect survival rates for other conditions, but are being felt to be the best 'on balance' solution to reduce deaths from Covid-19 instead.

This isn't pretty reading.

middleager · 25/03/2020 08:40

The Excel stor just turns me pale. I can't stop picturing all the camp beds you see in the 1918 pandemic.

MurrayTheMonk · 25/03/2020 08:42

That's no surprise re the UC application chaos-it's a mess at the best of times and lots of the experienced staff will be off I suppose Sad

Eeyoresstickhouse · 25/03/2020 08:46

So its not enough to be going through this pandemic, with nightmare neighbours from hell that my pay has not gone in the back today as it should when we were told we would be getting paid. We are all working from home and I am panicked now. My anxiety is off the scale with the everything going on that this may finish me off.
