Health Secretary Matt Hancock says a temporary hospital will be set up in London with military help
Based at the Excel exhibition centre, it will consist of two wards and hold up to 4,000 patients
Britain is also looking for 250,000 "NHS volunteers" to help national health service employees

From the BBC.

Wow, a ward of 2,000 patients. Times two. Mind boggling. I'm scared.

Angryrant55 · 24/03/2020 17:01

Benjamin Kentish LBC - 'Now Matt Hancock fully sticks the boot into TfL and Sadiq Khan: “There is no good reason in the information I’ve seen that the current levels of Tube provision should be as low as they are. We should have more Tube trains running.” '

#ITALY— 743 deaths in the last 24h.

ofwarren · 24/03/2020 17:02

BREAKING: #ITALY—
• 69.176 total cases of #COVID19
• 6.820 total deaths

Angryrant55 · 24/03/2020 17:03

Laura Kuenssberg - 'Hancock also takes a pop at London Mayor - says tubes have been cut back too much, one reason for the crowding that’s alarmed people to see.'

middleager · 24/03/2020 17:03

Oh Lord. Isn't Italy's peak meant to be tomorrow.
Feeling scared while all these pricks eat ice cream and have bbqs.

BeyondMymymymyCorona · 24/03/2020 17:06

CharlieTango and you darling, obviously didn't read my post properly - my wedding isn't yet, it's a good few months away. So no, it isn't obviously cancelled. If it is, I'm a big girl, I can deal with that.

Angryrant55 · 24/03/2020 17:06

Mark Lowen - 'Mixed bag from #Italy's #Coronavirus figures today. Deaths are up again - daily toll up from 601 to 743 today - but daily increase in infections falls again, now down to 7.16%. So a tragic increase in deaths but also a continued slowing of new cases. Starting to look like a trend.'

Angryrant55 · 24/03/2020 17:07

Vicki Young - 'Bet the Deputy Chief Medical Officer never thought she’d be answering questions about whether boyfriends & girlfriends (or other combinations) should move in together during.'

TheCanterburyWhales · 24/03/2020 17:07

Italy's peak is a week or two off. The press conference going on is saying the numbers infected is rising, but slowing down (particularly notable in Lombardia) The 743 deaths is obviously awful, but not unexpected given the number of infected.

LuxLFC · 24/03/2020 17:08

Are the UK numbers people who are in hospital? Are they all active cases or those who were confirmed as positive even if some are now recovered?

Angryrant55 · 24/03/2020 17:08

Laura Kuenssberg - 'TFL has cut back services partly of course because staff are ill or in isolation - questions in Whitehall about whether they have cut back more than needs be. One side bar of all this is how relationships btw central govt, urban mayors and devolved gifts are operating - obvs a huge amount of joint working going on, but tensions too.'

Angryrant55 · 24/03/2020 17:13

Maria Tadeo - 'Italy ends declining streak in terms of deaths / cases reported today. Deaths reported today 743 vs 601 on Monday.'

defthand · 24/03/2020 17:14

Disappointing to see a rise in new cases in Italy compared to yesterday. Hopefully just a blip.

Horehound · 24/03/2020 17:15

Thank you @Sunshinespacecadet :)

wintertravel1980 · 24/03/2020 17:18

Well, we went out for our daily state-sanctioned singular walking exercise - about an hour going quite briskly around the local park. There were a number of other families and household groups doing the same. Everybody kept their distance. Polite waving if it was somebody you recognised. Nobody abused anybody else.

I agree - I have seen exactly the same thing. It was clear larger groups were members of the same household (e.g. 2 parents and 3 children) and everyone seemed to keep safe distance. Of course, you can always find a way to take a sensational picture (oh, there are still people walking in parks and enjoying the nice weather!) but what I have observed so far looked like full compliance with the spirit of the UK lockdown. All the ice cream vans were long gone.

LeeMiller · 24/03/2020 17:19

The Italian death toll is awful but the fall in new cases looks positive, especially Lombardy and Emilia Romagna which they were worried about.

Jerseygaly · 24/03/2020 17:20

Ideally you need people in their own rooms otherwise surely they are getting more virus from everyone else in the ward or else very strict cleaning and ventilation??

So maybe taking over a hotel would be a better idea.

I am really sad to say though my experiences of care by nhs has not been good. Not sure if that's just them overworked or just not strictly monitored enough.
Certainly maternity services you just want to get in and out. And care for respiratory issues wasnt even good 10+ years ago.
And it is obviously likely that noone is going to want to spend much time on a ward with infected people on it. (Maternity is often made better by family helping). I suppose i think even giving meds to all these people with underlying conditions would take up a lot of time.

SingforAbsolution · 24/03/2020 17:22

The figures from the US are a lot slower coming out today.

SingforAbsolution · 24/03/2020 17:24

Re Italy, how long is it since the mass exodus of people in the north going home to the south?

Angryrant55 · 24/03/2020 17:24

Darren McCaffrey - 'NEW: @realDonaldTrump says #coronavirus would kill fewer than "massive recession or depression" '

Angryrant55 · 24/03/2020 17:27

Antonello Guerrera -'NEW. After some mild optimism yesterday on #Coronavirus figures from #Italy, today it's a bit less the case.
• 54,030 actively infected (3,612 more than yesterday, when it was +3,780)
• 6,820 dead (+743. Yesterday +601)
• 8,326 recovered (+894. Yesterday +408)'

Angryrant55 · 24/03/2020 17:28

Neil Henderson - 'The home and hardware chain @Homebase_uk
is staying open.'

LeeMiller · 24/03/2020 17:30

Lombardy: less pressure on ICU, slightly more patients recovered but yesterday 4 times as many new patients were intubated.

Angryrant55 · 24/03/2020 17:30

Lewis Goodall - 'NEW: the FTSE has had some terrible days recently but today bucked the trend.
It’s just closed up 9%- second biggest rise ever.'
