All the people suddenly desperate to do daily exercise

Cinammoncake · 23/03/2020 21:58

Do you normally exercise every day? If not, then just surely exercise as normal, maybe jog on the spot or do some star jumps at home
Okay if you live in a flat and want fresh air, but if not then just go in your garden surely.

It's not forever.

Most people exercise daily because their daily lives involve walking to the train station, walking to get lunch etc. Without those opportunities they are replacing with “exercise”. This is why you get the references to “fresh air” people did not think of it as such but it was for all intents and purposes a daily “walk”

I appreciate you think that is terrible and everything but actually it never was the case that COVID19 is the only thing that kills -obesity/ high blood pressure are also killers. Suggesting that people eliminating normal everyday physical activity is a Great thing to do requires us to say that dramatically reducing the physical activity of the country for six months minimum would not be bad for the nations health. Given we know a lifestyle without physical activity can be harmful to health I do not think you can say it confidently.

But then I think for a lot of people Seem to think of people die it’s ok just providing it’s not from covid 19?

I am HUGELY suffering. I have gone to the gym daily for at least five years, spending at least 90 minutes there (Not counting shower, changing etc.) I also don't drive and walk my kids to school 1.7miles each way, so I usually walk around 15,000 steps a day minimum.

I ordered a load of gym equipment a week ago but the company is inundated and it hasn't even been dispatched yet. All I have at home is a skipping rope, a mat, and some resistance bands.

I also have an eating disorder and I use exercise as the healthy way to manage this. With my exercise suddenly hugely curtailed I'm feeling a massive relapse coming on already. I feel absolutely terrible every time I eat and I hate my body.

I'm managing one walk a day of 5-6000 steps or a 5k run but it's not the same.

Quartz2208 · 25/03/2020 19:32

Scarlettblaize there are a lot of very good bodyweight fitness videos out there where all you need is a mat

Glowcat · 25/03/2020 19:46

As someone who always walks their dog daily the biggest change I’ve seen is the number of children out and about, exercising with their parents. It’s usually a weekend-only phenomenon.

FYI it’s totally possible to be overweight or obese and exercise daily.

ScarlettBlaize · 25/03/2020 19:59

@Quartz2208 Thank you but it's really not the same. I am constantly interrupted by the kids, I can't lose myself in it, I can't walk for hours, I can't use the stepper. I am usually on my feet almost all of the time. I am findng this unbearable and awful and it's not even been a week Sad

ThePlantsitter · 25/03/2020 20:04

Most people walk at some point in the day even if they don't formally exercise.

The rules ARE clear. You can go out to exercise. That means move your body to keep it working properly. Flicking your pony tail in leggings doesn't make your run more valid than my walk.

ScarlettBlaize · 25/03/2020 20:07

I don't know who that was aimed at, @ThePlantsitter , but for a lot of us, a walk once a day really doesn't remotely scratch the surface. I'm doing core work, upper body and yoga at home, but I can feel my body degenerating daily and it's fucking horrific. The gym has been my source of daily sanity for many years now.

Duchessofblandings · 25/03/2020 20:09

This occurred to us too. One of the most obese nations on the planet suddenly all can’t live without walking or jogging at every opportunity.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 25/03/2020 20:10

It's shocking just how little you move when just indoors, stuck at home. Because I'm a lazy cow, my step target is only 6000 steps, but I reach it most days without really trying. You can easily walk a mile merely changing lines on the Underground!
Today I had only done 2000 steps by 2pm and I felt like I'd been up and down the stairs dozens of times.
So unless I want osteoporosis, I had to go out for a walk.

ThePlantsitter · 25/03/2020 20:10

I don't think you suggested other people shouldn't exercise did you ScarlettBlaize? Or assuming you know who usually exercises and doesn't? Therefore no it wasn't assumed at you. If I've missed you saying that somewhere then yes it was frankly.

TheArchSorcererofContwaraburg · 25/03/2020 20:10

People keep insisting on doing whatever they please in the name of this 'daily exercise' and 'fresh air' and soon it will be a moot point as we'll have to go the way of Spain and Italy and France and not be able to go very far.

TheArchSorcererofContwaraburg · 25/03/2020 20:12

Exactly, Duchess. Incredible.

CheekyMango · 25/03/2020 20:14

@Cinammoncake have you not heard of cabin fever?

Duchessofblandings · 25/03/2020 20:19

Cabin fever doesn’t usually strike after 24 hours.

Hercwasonaroll · 25/03/2020 20:24

I walk my baby for naps usually twice per day. Walking round the garden is difficult on grass with a pushchair and bloody boring.

TheArchSorcererofContwaraburg · 25/03/2020 20:25

Amazing how Anne Frank and 7 other people managed to confine themselves to an area of about 500sq ft for 761 days to stay alive but so many are completely incapable of handling even 2 days of a very soft lockdown that will almost certainly have to become more restrictive because everyone is the exception.

Hercwasonaroll · 25/03/2020 20:26

Duchess that's bollocks. Cabin fever strikes by the afternoon in my house!

“Duchess that's bollocks. Cabin fever strikes by the afternoon in my house!”

Good luck for the next 3 months plus, when no-one is allowed outside anywhere because people refuse to abide by sensible rules.

I would usually briskly walk 8.97 miles (I know because my app tells me so it must be true😁) every morning. 2 marathons after concerted effort to be fit and healthy after cancer treatment.

If people like me (and our dogs) can limit it to a brief walk every day to try to stop the spread, everyone can.

cologne4711 · 25/03/2020 20:38

FGS we are allowed out once a day for daily exercise. So we're doing it. Bog off with the judgment.

If we were all going to work or walking the kids to school or going to the shops to browse we'd be getting some form of exercise. All that has gone. So we need to make an effort to get that exercise. Some people can do it in their gardens or houses, heck some people even have their own swimming pool. But most people need to go out.

Hercwasonaroll · 25/03/2020 20:38

Walking in the countryside and not seeing another soul for 2 hours is not a problem.

People generally aren't going out where I live. If they are it's for food or a walk into the countryside. I'm lucky to have this on my doorstep.

People in cities and densely populated areas obviously need to be more careful re walking.

We'll see what unfolds.

TheArchSorcererofContwaraburg · 25/03/2020 20:40

But, but, Duchess! What about the dog? It's so boring just in the garden! I can't possibly be bored. But, I've got children so I need to drive to an isolated spot (because I'm so clever and special, no one else can possibly have the same idea to go to this place, only me!). My dog is far more important that human lives and cannot possibly be in public. Daily excuses, mostly.

sociallydistained · 25/03/2020 20:41

I run and used to walk everywhere but today I did a home workout and haven't been out at all. I'll probably try and go for a run Friday before the weekend and stay in all weekend.

Absolutely, no judgement here. Once a day.

The problem is the people who don’t believe that applies to them, because they have a dog for example, who HAS to be taken out multiple times. Or whatever other daft reason they believe excludes them.

Hercwasonaroll · 25/03/2020 20:51

Are people in densely populated areas being total dicks? Because otherwise this virus really can't be spreading very fast from now on.

I'm seeing barely anyone when out walking. Previously I'd see/speak to at least 15. That's 15 fewer possible infections. Never mind the lack of shops, pubs, gyms, parks.

Is this post essentially people in London can't follow the rules?
