All the people suddenly desperate to do daily exercise

Do you normally exercise every day? If not, then just surely exercise as normal, maybe jog on the spot or do some star jumps at home
Okay if you live in a flat and want fresh air, but if not then just go in your garden surely.

It's not forever.

Maybe because everything else is closed, people are stressed out of their heads and need some release

This. And they’re at home, so have more time because they aren’t commuting. We keep getting told that “we’re all going to have to make changes” and “we’ve got to get used to things being different”- does that only apply when things are different in a worse way? Is grim satisfaction at everything being shit for an indefinite period the only acceptable response?

TheArchSorcererofContwaraburg · 24/03/2020 01:36

Yes, it's amazing how so many are obese and overweight when they're ALL walking miles every day and now must do so and drive to get there. Everyone lives 'right near' the woods or the like and of course, they are the only one who considers using it, no one else could possibly have the same idea.

noblegiraffe · 24/03/2020 01:40

You can always do PE with Joe Wicks if you’re not sure how to exercise indoors.

LeahDownTheLane · 24/03/2020 01:54

I’m a dog walker and have walked 8-10 miles 6 days a week for three years, I don’t know how to sit still all day.

Gingerkittykat · 24/03/2020 02:04

I swim twice a week and the rest of the time manage a decent step count in my daily routine. I think it is completely normal for people to want to walk right now, one of the things I am worried about is deteriorating fitness levels, after the 5 days I have been in self isolation I already have sciatica flaring up for the first time in a long time.

I personally won't be going further than my garden but needing to move right now is normal.

midwestspring · 24/03/2020 02:05

Well I've lost my two Pilates sessions, my every other day supermarket trips, my walking to collect the dc from school, park trips and weekend outings.
So yes I am exercising daily, indoors to be fair mostly but I will also take some walks.

LonginesPrime · 24/03/2020 02:11

It's not just about the physical aspects of exercise - being in green space and outdoors is key to good mental health. And many, many people's mental health is going to take a kicking in all of this.

If we're all allowed out to take a walk/jog/whatever once a day, why should the people who didn't take time out specifically for 'exercise' before (and who probably got their steps in at work/running errands/doing the school run) have to stay at home while only devoted fitness enthusiasts get to leave their homes?

This feels rather mean-spirited and self-righteous, given the extreme circumstances.

ClientQueen · 24/03/2020 02:22

None for me, not allowed to go for a walk either due to the 12 week isolation. Luckily I'm a sloth so happy to read/Netflix/potter at home!

DressingGownofDoom · 24/03/2020 02:27

Well no I didn't go for a daily walk previously, because I was at work all day and toddler DS was at nursery. We exercised at weekends.

Now we are all sitting staring at the same 4 walls all day every day a walk now and then sounds quite appealing.

puds11 · 24/03/2020 03:01

Yes, I would usually be at the gym normally 6 days a week and out for a walk pretty much every day sometimes more than once a day. I don’t have a garden, just a very small yard which isn’t really suitable for exercise. I’m gutted it’s one trip out a day but I guess it’s temporary and for the best.

twinnywinny14 · 24/03/2020 03:01

Surely if people are going from being busy and active at work all day to now doing absolutely nothing that is not good for physical health. DH is a TA and has been home a week and is already feeling it physically and gained weight which is not good for anyone to do

ScarlettBlaize · 24/03/2020 03:15

Do you normally exercise every day?

Yes. On a normal day I walk around 15,000 steps and spend 1.5-2 hours training in the gym.

I ended up running 5k on empty streets at 11pm yesterday after a day of bloody YouTube workouts.

Why are you so dismissive of this?

Shinesweetfreedom · 24/03/2020 03:16

Dear God
How many really need to die before people get the message.

tempester28 · 24/03/2020 03:35

I think a lot of people are thinking Shit! I wish I was fitter and healthier.

So I am not surprised people are trying to improve their health asap

FortunesFave · 24/03/2020 03:51

just go in your garden surely.

Eyeroll. Not everyone HAS a garden.

AdoreTheBeach · 24/03/2020 04:06

Yes. I was suffering anxiety and depression for a few years - therapist suggested yoga and exercise. After creating a 6 days a week programme of yoga, Pilates, spun and body pimp (7th day very, very long dog walk) I got better (and healthier). I’m doing home yoga/Pilates but need some space from my family (24/7 can create tension /squabbles that used to be triggers) so will do only a short dog walk locally daily.

SociallyDistanced · 24/03/2020 04:17

People's mental health will also take a battering when their lived ones die, alone, suffocating slowly to death on a trolley in an over crowded hospital corridor because there are no beds let alone ventilators.

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 24/03/2020 04:50

DH runs 5 miles most days and goes on a cycle ride (40k) about 3 times a week. I just go on a daily walk.

Not everyone sits on their arse all day and a few star jumps in ones front room doesn't really cut it as exercise

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 24/03/2020 04:55

I have run pretty much every day since I was 15. I'm now nearly 40. It's kept me sane during this whole thing. I come back from a run and all my anxiety is gone and I feel happy and light. I run at 5am before work (just heading out now) and rarely see many people so yes, I will be going for as long as they let me.

Shiraznowplease · 24/03/2020 04:59

I am a key worker, I am risking my and my family’s health. I have no choice but to go out. The rules apply to everyone. Why is it so hard for you to give up your exercise to keep us all safe. Your right to exercise does not trump my desire to Iive stop being so damn selfish. Rant over

iVampire · 24/03/2020 05:02

I was in marathon training

4 runs a week (one a really long one - should have been an 18miler this week) plus 2x strength/conditioning sessions.

I’m now in the shielded group, so won’t be going out at all for the moment (they say 12 weeks for me)

I can do the strength/conditioning indoors, not the running though

I don’t begrudge people a daily walk though. Forming good exercise habits (because they start to think/believe ‘I do exercise every day’) could set new heathy habits for some is good for the population wellbeing/health, just as much as the continuation for those who exercised before. And of course exercise outdoors is of considerable MH benefit,

But we really need people not to be dicks. Go alone. Don’t ‘accidentally’ meet up with someone. Straight out and back. Still local (walk/run/cycle can all be done on quiet pavement/road, doesn’t mean trip to local beauty spot)

If people can’t do that, then the provision to do so will be removed from the list of permitted activities

Which would be a shame

Incontinencesucks · 24/03/2020 05:13

I love exercising, it's great for my mh and PND but at the end of the day we all have to do our part. I don't have a frontline job though several i love do. I can support them by staying in. Ill exercise once a day instead of 3 times and do my part by finding other ways to try to improve and help my mental health.

My.mates are putting their physical AND mental health at risk.for everyone. We all do our bit. Or should do.

Incontinencesucks · 24/03/2020 05:14

Once a day outside that should be

Lynda07 · 24/03/2020 05:21

I've done some of my bit outside today already, went out of the front door to see if the milkman had delivered yet - he hadn't so I'll have to do it again. It's freezing! I'm so cosy indoors.

Lynda07 · 24/03/2020 05:26

Exercise can be undertaken indoors. Dancing in an aerobic fashion to quick, rhythmical music with a good beat. Star jumps. Standing and twisting body from side to side from the waist with hands on hips and then again with arms spread out moving as you twist. Lifting an empty jar full of coins with one hand from low down to arm stretched upwards, twenty times, then the other side.

I'm worn out just thinking about it. I used to do that every day and as well as brisk walks.

I'll go back to bed when the milkman has been.

It's nice being at home.
