All the people suddenly desperate to do daily exercise

Do you normally exercise every day? If not, then just surely exercise as normal, maybe jog on the spot or do some star jumps at home
Okay if you live in a flat and want fresh air, but if not then just go in your garden surely.

It's not forever.

Do you normally exercise every day?

Plenty of people exercise every day. I certainly do (via a combination of walks and home workouts). Last year I can only remember two days out of 365 when I did not make it to 10,000 steps.

Obesity is a significant risk factor for CV. If people spend 3 weeks watching TV and binge eating, our hospitalisation rate (as a % of overall cases) will go up, not down. I think UK rules are actually very reasonable and they focus on the spirit rather than the letter of the law. Stay alone - take care of yourself and others - be safe.

The biggest issue I can see now is not random single walkers and bikers - it's overcrowdness on the public transport. I hope we will manage to get it resolved over next few days.

Picklypickles · 24/03/2020 11:17

I don't really like exercise, but have always taken the children out for walks around the moors where we live. Not going out at all really now though. We live in a small village on the moors, there is a huge football field which I had been planning on taking them to for running about but went up yesterday and the gates been locked. I don't really want to take them down onto our stretch of moors because they are always covered in dog shit and no doubt the entire village and probably next village over will be walking their dogs there. We have plenty of circular walks around the village but the roads are extremely narrow and people drive far too fast, last time I took them on one of these walks we were very nearly hit by some dick in a 4x4 racing around blind bends without a thought. I guess that just leaves the public footpath through the crazy gun-toting farmers fields.

I live alone in a flat right around the corner from my work. Prior to this episode I walked to work, then home again, lie on sofa, bed. Repeat. No other exercise.

I am one of those people who have started going out for a brisk walk around my local park in the morning when there is hardly anyone around and have started doing You Tube videos are home.

Imposed isolation, especially when living alone with not a lot of emotional support really hammers the 'alone' home. I should be doing everything to help myself and there's no time like the present to start incorporating a little exercise, which I should've been doing ages ago anyway.

Doesn't mean my mental health is any more or less important than anyone else's or that I have less of a right to be out and about than seasoned dedicated runners. Same way I feel about folk who moan about new people in the gym in January.

Collidascope · 24/03/2020 11:20

It feels like there are some on this thread determined the whole situation be as miserable for everyone as possible.
We've been told that going out for exercise once a day is allowed. I appreciate that some people don't have any common sense - as demonstrated by the Richmond Park photos - and that makes some people worry that "if you give them an inch, they'll take a mile," but a lot of us are entirely capable of heading out for a walk or run without coming into close contact with others. I don't feel it's fair to scold people who are abiding by the rules and sensibly taking advantage of that freedom just because of a few dickwads who aren't. I'm sure if people do start taking the piss, restrictions will increase.

bluetongue · 24/03/2020 11:23

Even the most dangerous prisoners are allowed out for an hour a day.

supercee · 24/03/2020 11:24

To add, I'm sticking to the rules. Currently I'm out, brisk walk around near empty park early doors then in. If people start to get the same idea and it fills up then it's round the block for me or nothing at all. I'll stick my head out the window.

rookiemere · 24/03/2020 11:29

Cinammoncake I think we're all coming from the same place which is to eradicate spread of the virus, but I still don't understand why you think it would be wrong for people to use their state allowed one outing a day providing they don't come into contact with anyone, or why regular runners would be deemed more worthy of this right over others.

This could go on for a long time. If the government deems it safe for me to exercise once a day outside then that's the advice I'll take thanks.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 24/03/2020 11:33

There are so many options for exercising at home, you don’t need to leave the house to stay fit and healthy.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 24/03/2020 11:37

@bluetongue, you are allowed out once a day. No one is saying you aren’t but some people are taking the piss already and things have barely even started.

supercee · 24/03/2020 11:38

@JonHammIsMyJamm options are somewhat limited when you live in a flat. I'm doing online stuff but also mindful not to piss off the people below as I have hard flooring.

We are allowed to exercise/go outside! Just be mindful of what's being asked of us.

CathyandHeathcliff · 24/03/2020 11:40

We don’t have a garden, so we’ll be having one walk a day.

JustBecauseYouCanBarry · 24/03/2020 11:42

you don’t need to leave the house to stay fit and healthy

Plenty of people want to leave their house though at some point, whether that be for their own enjoyment, or the good of their health physically and mentally.

The government have said that's okay providing you follow basic rules (not coming into contact with others, going alone or with your household etc) therefore, that's the advice people should be able to take without judgement from others here.

I'll be going on a walk at dinner time with my dog. I'm fortunate to live in a fairly quiet location next to some wooded walks so hopefully I won't come into contact with anyone else. Won't feel guilty about it one bit. My dog (and me!) needs some fresh air and to get out of these 4 walls for a bit.

By all means condemn people who don't follow the advice i.e. gathering in parks, going out 4/5 times a day, meeting up with mates for a jog etc... But right now most people I can see on this thread are acting perfectly within the rules we've been given.

JustBecauseYouCanBarry · 24/03/2020 11:44

And no one has the right to exercise outside more than anyone else.

Nursing83 · 24/03/2020 11:44

I walk my kids to school and back twice a day I occasionally pop out into the village for other groups ect. I normally average 5000-7500 steps a day. I wouldn't say I do any exercise but if I dont walk every day I'll just end up getting even fatter. I'm so fat I struggle to do online exercise classes so I will try to go out for a walk at least once a day.

DamnMyImmuneSystem · 24/03/2020 11:57

DH and I usually exercise in the gym and play badminton/tennis. I used to do pole so will get my xpole out again and do more yoga. We have a decent collection of weights for DH and have been known to use each other as weights (we do not look nearly as graceful as those instagram couples, though, and usually end up giggling hysterically Grin).

Jumping jacks in a flat are not ideal so for cardio we will both go running and take our (very young and energetic) dogs along. We have to take them on walks anyway but that won't be enough to burn off their energy, so that is perfect.

Might go on a rare bike ride - DH doesn't really cycle and the cyclists in the city centre seem to have converted from driving a BMW, so usually, it is not a pleasant experience. Streets are pretty empty now and I could easily go on a ~30min bike ride without getting close to anyone, which is actually really nice.

WatchingFromTheWings · 24/03/2020 12:02

I workout minimum 5 mornings a week at the local leisure centre. Fortunately I have a selection of small gym equipment here, weights etc. Got a treadmill coming today (ordered before the lockdown). I'm starting to climb the walls!

PeterPanGoesWrong · 24/03/2020 12:19

Probably the people that get their exercise cycling to work or at the gym, or jogging the streets, or at a Zumba class. Or at their yoga group, or swimming. Or walking the school run.....
Have you always been so judgemental of others op? I’ve just joined in an online exercise group supplied by my gym because I pay a sodding fortune to be tortured by them. Do you feel you need to grumble at me too or is it just people desperate for a blast of fresh air and a change of scenery offending you?

megletthesecond · 24/03/2020 12:33

watching all the treadmills had gone when I went on Argos yesterday. I should have sorted it last week 🤦‍♀️.

00100001 · 24/03/2020 12:36

there's fuck all else to do....

WitsEnding · 24/03/2020 12:36

I normally walk 10-12 miles several times a week, and 6 miles on other days. I will follow the guidelines and walk for my exercise, going to try up and down the nearest steep side street as I expect the (equally close) park will be busy. Usually swim too, but gave that up before the pools were closed.
I tried star jumps etc but they aggravated my PVD and I'm not risking my sight rather than go outside safely within the rules.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 24/03/2020 12:41

Picklypickles, 'gun-toting farmers' HmmConfused?

Cinammoncake · 24/03/2020 12:51

Have you always been so judgemental of others op?

yes probably

Do you feel you need to grumble at me too or is it just people desperate for a blast of fresh air and a change of scenery offending you?

Not trying to grumble at anyone, just having a discussion. Tbf I'm sure it depends where you live. I live in a busy urban area with a mix of houses and flats. I have a garden so if I go in my garden and exercise indoors it leaves more room in the park for people in flats. I will go for a walk and that's a good idea, but I can do that a few times a week rather than daily if there are alternatives, that's all.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman - just the one gun-toting farmer! There is a public footpath that happens to run through 2 of his fields, he is well known for threatening to shoot people, usually dog owners but not always, he once threatened to shoot my mum in the face whilst she was with my younger brothers and recently threatened to shoot a lady who had stopped by a gate to admire the view!

ErrolTheDragon · 24/03/2020 13:02

For those who can't do stuff like star jumps because of either consideration to neighbours or dodgy joints, if you google 'low impact HIIT' you should be able to find some ideas.

Greenpop21 · 24/03/2020 13:23

We’ve set up our beach cricket set in the garden. Dining table is now for table tennis.Smile
