Do you normally exercise every day? If not, then just surely exercise as normal, maybe jog on the spot or do some star jumps at home
Okay if you live in a flat and want fresh air, but if not then just go in your garden surely.

It's not forever.

I'm glad I'm not the only one confused by how irate some posters are getting about people's plans that are absolutely within the specified requirements. As soon as anyone posts something along the lines of 'I'm planning to go for a daily 20 minute walk in a field where I can easily stay well away from others if anyone else is around,' the response seems to pretty much be 'What, do you think you're special? Is because of people like you that we're on this situation!' - I don't get it. If you personally prefer not to go out at all for exercise, fine - but the requirements absolutely make provision for everyone to do so once a day. If you don't like that, take it up with the government, not people following the information in good faith. Save your ire for people who aren't sticking to the rules.

SisterSist3r · 24/03/2020 08:20

That has absolutely no specifications as regards exercise.

Teateaandmoretea · 24/03/2020 08:23

Exercise is not banned so wind your neck in. People engaging in competitive self isolation and berating others who are actually following the guidelines are not going to help anyone, we are in this together.

If you are intending to never go out I hope that you are taking a vitamin d supplement because sunlight boosts the immune system which we are all going to need to save the nhs

Follow the advice, and if you'd rather not ever go outside that is your choice.

Danetobe · 24/03/2020 08:24

Well no one knows what is right at this point we will only see in hindsight which societies survive and thrive. People have the liberty to do what they want and feel is acceptable. Michael gove just said 'stay at home if you possibly can' I'm not a law maker but he is. You can leave your house but I dare say he might change his mind, and the law, if too many people abuse this liberty. I don't think outside space is a dispensable luxury and think people without a private space should be given priority access to public outside space. I think trying to lose weight to reduce the cv risk to you personally is a bit too late at this point but a good idea no doubt in general.

LettuceP · 24/03/2020 08:28

I walk as many places as I can usually, at least three 10k steps walks a week plus school runs. I also do 3-4 exercise classes a week, those I can do at home but I'm definitely relieved I can still go out for long walks.

For those of us that exercise regularly it will be very hard when our option to go for a walk/run/cycle will get taken away because others are taking the piss, which will happen, I give it a week.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 24/03/2020 08:29

Those whose DH mysterious hobby is golf are going to have him stuck under your feet for an additional 4 hours every weekend

ChipsAreLife · 24/03/2020 08:30

I think everyone's mental health will benefit significantly by taking a walk outside whilst we still can. I don't begrudge anyone doing this and neither should you

rookiemere · 24/03/2020 08:33

chipsarelife - I would add in "provided they respect social distancing requirements" as that's the issue with this. Everyone and their dog deciding it's a good weekend to walk up Snowdon is not following those guidelines.

Danetobe · 24/03/2020 08:34

Ok

HasaDigaEebowai · 24/03/2020 08:34

The government guidance says that for exercise people should be out for as short a period as possible and so long country walks will not be an option anyway.

DoubleAction · 24/03/2020 08:35

Yes I get out for at least a walk everyday, most days I also do a run, bike ride or gym class.

Steenac74 · 24/03/2020 08:38

@Hollywhiskey if you live rurally do you have a garden? Can you do every alternate day you run on own and on that day Organise a sports day for the kids ok the garden of just let them out there to run around?

SisterSist3r · 24/03/2020 08:43

We’d be out for a shorter amount of time driving for a couple of minutes and doing our short forest loop than the most deserted walk from the house.

SisterSist3r · 24/03/2020 08:45

Common sense is what is needed. I want clarification from government not over zealous MNers.Really hope they specify. He has said bike riding is ok. It’s dangerous and how long for? We could cycle to our woods but think driving would be more sensible.

HasaDigaEebowai · 24/03/2020 08:47

but you've got to drive, you've got to park, you may have to touch gates etc, you will need to get petrol, you will need to pay for petrol etc

Greenpop21 · 24/03/2020 08:49

I walk daily with my dog for about 45 mins but at work in a school I clock up a lot of steps so it’s important to exercise even if you don’t normally as staying home could mean a more sedentary lifestyle. Plus it’s a good thing, people may form new, good habits. Why knock a positive to come out of this ?

Teateaandmoretea · 24/03/2020 08:49

Cycling is not dangerous most accidents involve cars 🤷🏻‍♀️

Greenpop21 · 24/03/2020 08:50

DH said his usual 1 hour cycle to work was lovely and quiet yesterday. Every cloud!

IamAporcupine · 24/03/2020 08:52

This. I am glad I am not the only one who feels unsettled about the tone of these threads. We are lucky that (so far) we are allowed to go out to exercise. I will do so in a very safe manner until I am told the opposite and it really does not matter if I used to exercise before or not!

Countries that have dealt with this crisis in a more appropriate way from the beginning and have the resources to test, isolate and trace new cases as well as those with sufficient ventilators and ICU are showing that extreme isolation and lockdown for all the population might not be the only solution.

We are not in my home South American country. This is the UK.
Your anger at the thought of people dying because the NHS may collapse is misplaced.

TheOrigBrave · 24/03/2020 08:53

I live in a village. I've told DS he will have to choose whether to go and kick his football around at the park ALONE or come out with me later for a bike ride.

I am a runner, though have a sprained ankle at the moment. This is probably fortuitous as it's made me go on the bike, which is something my sons prefer. Sometimes DS2 will bike while I run.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/03/2020 08:57

Cycling is not dangerous most accidents involve cars

At the weekend, the roads around here were mostly quiet, quite a few cyclists out, pedestrians stepping into the road because the pavement is too narrow to pass on even under normal circumstances. But this was punctuated by a few high speed cars, motorbikes and at one point a pack of young men on quad bikes - I'd no idea they could go that fast. And a couple of extremely fast police cars.

So do be extra careful. Probably a bad idea to run on rough ground and take a pole or two if walking on uneven paths. (These can also be used to enforce a bit of distance if necessary I guess.)

SisterSist3r · 24/03/2020 08:57

But you are supposed to keep travel to a minimum. How is a 1 hour cycle ok for a car journey that could be a fraction of that if we’re supposed to keep being outside to a minimum? How is an hour cycle ride ok but not an hours walk that included a 5 minute car journey,We have keen cyclists in the family. My Dh used to cycle 18 miles to work, ludicrous to do that, he has come off a few times and never have cars been involved.

BlingLoving · 24/03/2020 09:00

I dont consider myself someone who exercises as such. However, I do the majority of dog walking in this house usually, and am generally out and about on foot and public transport a fair bit. So I dont think it's fair to say that all those obese people who suddenly claim to want exercise are taking the piss. I know a very overweight woman who I see walking every day and I am sure she will miss doing that.

We have been lucky so far in that a local small park has been quiet enough for us to take the dog there as a family and not run into anyone. Yesterday there were three other families/people but all easily avoided and me and kids stepped off paths when dog walkers came through. But suspect it might get busier.
