All the people suddenly desperate to do daily exercise

Do you normally exercise every day? If not, then just surely exercise as normal, maybe jog on the spot or do some star jumps at home
Okay if you live in a flat and want fresh air, but if not then just go in your garden surely.

It's not forever.

Before this started I never went out specifically for exercise, but I can't drive and always walked around a lot just to get me where I need to be, or just a walk for a walks sake because I enjoy it. I also worked in a shop so was on my feet all day and that kept me active.

I didn't go out today for my daily exercise, but I will get my once a day when I feel like it. I follow social distancing rules and I think it's important for mental health to get some fresh air and sunlight.

ScarlettBlaize · 25/03/2020 21:01

@ThePlantsitter I don't think you suggested other people shouldn't exercise did you ScarlettBlaize? Or assuming you know who usually exercises and doesn't? Therefore no it wasn't assumed at you. If I've missed you saying that somewhere then yes it was frankly.

No I didn't say that. I hate the assumption in this thread that people are lying if they say they need to exercise. I'm about to go out for a walk through deserted streets because I feel like I'm rotting and vegetating here.

@TheArchSorcererofContwaraburg

What the fuck is wrong with you, referring to Anne Frank as some sort of aspiration? She died of typhus at 15 years old, it's an appalling account of man's inhumanity to man, not a morality tale.

HarrietThePi · 25/03/2020 21:05

I don't understand the thread. Is it aimed at people who are going out more than once a day for exercise? We've been told we can go out once a day for exercise, so if we do that and maintain social distancing while we are out, what's the problem?

ThePlantsitter · 25/03/2020 21:09

Is this post essentially people in London can't follow the rules?

No I think it's people in London not realising they live in densely populated areas because most people aren't usually at home. There are loads of people in the park always. But the ones I have seen have been following the distance rules where they can. Of course, that might not be enough. But them's the rules.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 25/03/2020 21:42

Is it aimed at people who are going out more than once a day for exercise?

From what i can gather originally the thread was about people having the audacity to exercise outside of their own back garden

It seems to have evolved into criticism of anyone that goes out more than once to exercise

Ive not left my property to exercise...so I’m feeling very smug As i assume I’m winning the thread

HedgeHogFoxBadger · 25/03/2020 21:48

I normally exercise 4 times a week at the gym or running. My job is very active and I do a lot of walking each day, I do between 15,000- 20,000 steps a day.
I have set up a gym at home and have done 1 run this week in between Les Mill on demand workouts. I plan to run tomorrow. I also have a dog to walk but my children are taking it in turns and we have a rota.

HedgeHogFoxBadger · 25/03/2020 21:50

I think davina has workouts for free at the moment and you can youtube workouts

BeijingBikini · 25/03/2020 21:51

Well no, I normally don't go for an hour walk every day. But normally on a weekday I'd walk to the bus stop, walk round the office, walk to shop at lunchtime, walk home. On weekend I'd pootle about town for hours or go to London. So now I'm replacing all those chunks outside with a nice walk for exercise. Problem?

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 25/03/2020 21:58

hedge

All 4 of us did an old davina workout today

Wasnt much room but it was great fun

The 'Blitz Spirit' is certainly alive and well

That is, if it's a euphemism for petty minded people and their mean spirited judgements.

soupforbrains · 25/03/2020 22:06

The whole being allowed out once per day for exercise is as much for the nations mental wellbeing as it is for their physical wellbeing. Being stuck between the same 4 walls all day everyday is horrible. You blithely suggest people can just go in the garden but I like a great many people do not have a garden or any outdoor space.

I don’t regularly exercise in any formal way, but I work in construction and spend most days outside on my feet traipsing around large sites up and down scaffolds and ladders or otherwise doing yard and warehouse inspections. Being at home The way I am now dramatically decreases my activity ‘doing a few star jumps’ isn’t going to cut it. Getting outside into the fresh air, open spaces and sunshine is hugely important for mental wellbeing (and sunlight boosts immune systems too).

So long as people observe the required distances and follow the rules everyone is entitled to 1 trip outdoors per day. You don’t get to decide who does or doesn’t.

BeijingBikini · 25/03/2020 22:36

Amazing how Anne Frank and 7 other people managed to confine themselves to an area of about 500sq ft for 761 days to stay alive but so many are completely incapable of handling even 2 days of a very soft lockdown that will almost certainly have to become more restrictive because everyone is the exception.

WTF? We are allowed to go our for exercise once a day. Who has been incapable or an "exception"? We are all following the rules.

Saz12 · 25/03/2020 22:57

I feel if I don’t get out then after a couple weeks I’d go nuts. I don’t normally go out to exercise every day, but I’ve never had the prospect of at home 24/7 for 12 weeks before.

Personally I’m feeling more relaxed about people’s need to be out. If we were robots it’d be easy to demand everyone stays in their little overlooked back garden. But we’re not and we need more.

LaurieMarlow · 25/03/2020 23:15

Yes they did that. The alternative was the concentration camp. I’m sure it was extremely detrimental to their mental and physical health.

Exercising out of doors is very low risk if social distancing is applied. It has many benefits which will help people.

hidethoselyingeyes · 25/03/2020 23:20

Those that I know who have taken to exercising in the last two weeks, do so for their mental health.

BruceAndNosh · 26/03/2020 00:04

Also people who are relatively sedentary are realising that improving their lung function might be a good idea with a serious respiratory virus going around...

Doobigetta · 26/03/2020 13:59

I’ve been waiting for someone to invoke Anne Frank. Is that the bar you’re happy to set? That as long as life is marginally better than it was for people living in terror of literally imminent death (which is not what concerns about a virus with a fairly low mortality rate rationally are) during the regime that committed the most horrific human rights abuses in history, we’re all fine and dandy? Ffs. Give it another couple of months and you’ll have moved from there to saying that Anne Frank was a whiney snowflake and you know because you’re better.

rookiemere · 26/03/2020 14:06

I'm disappointed with a friend on FB who has posted a picture of an empty park with today's rainy weather with the caption that clearly all the new joggers have taken a look at the weather and decided to stay in today.

If one side effect of this is that more people take up outside exercise then great, good on them. Provided people ensure they are a safe distance from each other then surely getting a bit of fresh air and exercise should be encouraged not mocked as if it's something only seasoned athletes are allowed to do.
