DD(13) thinks he can carry on his paper round. I say no.

Who is right?

OP posts:
willloman · 24/03/2020 10:54

Does he come into direct contact with anyone? These rounds are usually before anyone else is about. Toss papers onto doorstep, wear gloves, as previous posters have said it may be some people's only form of communication/news. What is the company's view?

YgritteSnow · 24/03/2020 10:56

Who are these people who would be happy for their 13 year old to be going to multiple locations, risking interactions with multiple people and touching multiple surfaces? Beggars belief!

Peaseblossom22 · 24/03/2020 10:57

@alloutoffucks in which case he should be fined or imprisoned in his own house for the good of the rest of us. These people are selfish and thoughtless ( yes I know that’s harsh) . Fancy not being able to forgo your daily paper for your grandchildren’s future .

TinklyLittleLaugh · 24/03/2020 11:11

Ok, I have been overruled here by the rest of the family.

DS does his round at the crack of dawn when only the owner is in the shop. Always wears gloves anyway because he is on his bike. Picks up the papers he needs from piles on the floor, picks up his wages from the counter and then delivers the papers through letterboxes.

He does deliver to lots of old people. Apparently one of them came out today and was very grateful but DS quickly backed off and said "Two metres," and left it on his wall.

I am still not happy though. Think DH is coming round to my point of view. But our problem is DS has so much energy (plays so much sport, trains nearly every night normally), he's going a bit crazy from lack of exercise.

Think of vulnerable people, my dm is already in a panic at the thought of not seeing anyone for 3 weeks (over 70) she’s already done a week alone. She’s recently widowed.
By not complying you are making life even more unpleasant for her and thousands like her. All for some broccoli/ chard or pretending the dog can only crap on the beach. Be sensible. Then we can start our new normal.

One 13 year old observing social distancing whilst on paper round delivering what is potentially one of the few sources of news/entertainment to many older or vulnerable people

Vs

Many of people in the category above will think "my paper isn't being delivered anymore, so I'll just pop to my local shop to get one" and they will quite likely stop and have a chat with people they meet on the way and in the shop itself.

Also paper round = can't be done from home, it is providing a service to older/vulnerable/disabled people and would count as daily exercise.

Allotment = solitary exercise. Plus food, which means avoiding supermarkets/buying food elsewhere, taking a bit of the strain off demand.

OrangeTwirl · 24/03/2020 11:47

Nobody died from not reading the newspaper! This is about life or death... you know the essential things. It’s not about entertainment!

It seems we won’t get this country under control until a complete lockdown is enforced. Stupid, stupid people 🤬

Jayfee · 24/03/2020 11:50

I don't understand people who think no allotment. As long as you keep well away from people, you are following government guidelines.

ACupOfCoffee · 24/03/2020 11:51

Yes, but my point is that many people will still go out and buy their daily paper, thus putting themselves at greater risk of coming into contact with others.

ACupOfCoffee · 24/03/2020 11:53

1 person delivering to 30 households with zero contact

Vs

30 people all going out to buy a paper, coming into contact with at least one other person (the shopkeeper)

I realise that not all 30 people will go out, but some will if they are not given reason not to.

alloutoffucks · 24/03/2020 11:54

Yes my elderly father will just go out and buy a paper however much I tell him not to. Took persuading to get him to agree to get it delivered.

alloutoffucks · 24/03/2020 11:57

@Peaseblossom22 I think he would just take the fine. And no one is going to imprison a very elderly man for going outside.
He is already facing at least 3 months inside by himself. No access to internet.

OrangeTwirl · 24/03/2020 12:00

If people can’t be resistible for their own health then the only alternative is to close newsagents then. What part of Stay at home don’t people understand?

Fgs why are we saying people will break the law anyway . We don’t say let’s have no speed limits because people will break it anyway . I despair .

ACupOfCoffee · 24/03/2020 12:13

More people will Stay At Home if they get deliveries.

ACupOfCoffee · 24/03/2020 12:16

Also re: allotments/supermarkets:

Driving to an overcrowded supermarket to buy food where it is impossible to maintain social distancing = absolutely fine (and for many people unavoidable)

Driving to an allotment to harvest your own food, where it is very straightforward to maintain social distancing = are you crazy???!!!!

NeurotrashWarrior · 24/03/2020 12:22

Apparently Gove says allotments are fine.

the only thing I've ever agreed with him on

NeurotrashWarrior · 24/03/2020 12:24

On different types of exercise, he said people would be allowed to run, walk or go to an allotment, but not to do more social activities, such as playing golf.

OrangeTwirl · 24/03/2020 12:24

Those who think it’s essential for their parents to have a newspaper... you go and get it and deliver it to them. Stop expecting a child to put his life at risk so your parent can read a newspaper.

I see no problem with the allotment. One person takes his exercise to the allotment, digs some tatties for the family dinner, and walks home again avoiding contact with others. Food is essential and much safer to get veg without the hordes stuffing their trolleys at the supermarkets.

Newspapers are not essential and never will be

alloutoffucks · 24/03/2020 12:35

I do not think it is essential for my father to have a newspaper, I just know he will. I am not going to drive 400 mile trip every day to deliver him a newspaper.
If it was a proper lock down where he could not go outside he would just have to cope. I am just being realistic about how he behaves. He thinks fetching a paper is low risk and only agreed to delivery to shut me up.

OrangeTwirl · 24/03/2020 12:39

There you are. If he goes to the newsagent early in the morning to pick his paper up he’ll be at the same risk as somebody else’s CHILD.

Hell would freeze over before any of my children left this house, at this time. They certainly won’t be delivering newspapers to old men who are just as capable of getting their own.

Qasd · 24/03/2020 12:42

In think yes it’sa home delivery job which is allowed it’s not just out for food and medicine but for essential work which includes home Delivery at the moment.

Of course whether you want him to is a different story!

Duchessofblandings · 24/03/2020 12:43

Not essential

ACupOfCoffee · 24/03/2020 12:46

If he goes to the newsagent early in the morning to pick his paper up he’ll be at the same risk as somebody else’s CHILD.

But it's not the same risk. The newspaper can be posted through the door with zero contact. By going into a newsagents, they will come into contact with whoever serves them, plus everyone else who has left home early in the morning to collect the paper.

5zeds · 24/03/2020 12:47

If he does it there is risk.
If he doesn’t there isn’t.

Avoid risk.

Your son is not more active or more inconvenienced than everyone else.
