I'm relieved. How about you?

OP posts:

My main worry is that none of it will be enforced anyway. “Essential” is too open to interpretation and the fact people can claim they’re doing something for a vulnerable neighbour is easily abused too

That’s probably true but even so the opportunities to reduce transmission have been drastically reduced. And that’s what this is all about.

We can’t stop this fucking virus (until/unless there’s a vaccine) but we can spread out the rate at which it transmits so the most vulnerable people aren’t all in need of medical care at once.

DdraigGoch · 23/03/2020 21:54

Well based on current information I'm fucked. I can't go out to MOT my car. I can't drive it or even leave it parked on the street without an MOT. And I can't even move it to an off-street parking location.
@safariboot I would hope that in the circumstances the authorities will show leniency regarding motoring offences.

BorsetshireBlueBalls · 23/03/2020 21:55

I'm assuming that 'essential' shops include ALL small food and household goods retailers. Supermarkets are crowded places harbouring panic-buying superspreaders (not really, but they are busier and less effective at providing for my family's shopping needs at any rate). I"m glad - every day added builds the NHS' resilience and judging by the pictures people have been taking the piss.

Gilead · 23/03/2020 21:55

I’m relieved. I’m in the higher risk group.

daisypond · 23/03/2020 21:56

Yes but why are we still allowing planes to land here?
They’ve asked everyone travelling abroad to come home.

Cam77 · 23/03/2020 21:57

Funny it’s only a couple of years ago the Tories were literally cheering in the aisles at having blocked a meager pay rise for nurses and other emergency personnel. Over the past ten years they have created a massive shortage of nurses and have failed in this crisis to even provide them with basic protective equipment. Now that wanker stands every day behind a sign reading “Protect the NHS”.

longtimecomin · 23/03/2020 21:58

For all of you mentioning the police, it's not the police, it's the army that will enforce. I've seen convoys of them.

ivytable · 23/03/2020 21:59

There is still no protection for essential staff / key workers though. A family member works at Poundland and all they care about is making money. They have said they won't close even in lockdown aren't willing to shorten working hours and staff are dropping like flies. Staff working way above their hours (with no overtime or extra pay) and customers disregarding social distancing, horrendous. The government needs to do more to protect key workers.

HonestlyItsFine · 23/03/2020 21:59

They’ve asked everyone travelling abroad to come home
That sounded more like a stark warning- I think they WILL stop flights soon.

potter5 · 23/03/2020 22:01

But we are allowing flights from other countries still, not just to bring UK citizens back.

fridgegrazer · 23/03/2020 22:01

OP I topped up my electricity and gas card/keys at the Co-op - so a food shop - can you top yours up there?

ClientQueen · 23/03/2020 22:03

It's been what, 90 mins since the announcement and I've already seen two people say they will carry on walking their dog as many times a day as they want Hmm

lilgreen · 23/03/2020 22:06

Relieved.

Hollyhead · 23/03/2020 22:06

Relieved but for people in quiet rural areas (not touristy) the restrictions on exercise are pointless and irritating. I will still go out for my 6am run AND walk my DC in the afternoon. Neither activity involves any social contact with others.

milveycrohn · 23/03/2020 22:06

I am disappointed with the British public, that made this extra move necessary.
The pics on TV of all those people gathering together in parks, etc totally insane.
Or do we want a similar scenario here of hundreds dying overnight - as in Italy, or lying in corridors as in Spain.
I am hoping things will not be so bad here, but frankly, I am staying indoors and hoping that neither I nor anyone I know will get it, and if I do get it, I hope the NHS is not totally stuffed with these idiots, so if I need to go to hospital, there will be enough resources for me to be treated. (Same with family members)
Sadly, I doubt it is enforceable as we don't carry ID cards, and there are insufficient police.

CorianderLord · 23/03/2020 22:07

Relieved, scared, like history is unfolding in front of me.

Orange89 · 23/03/2020 22:07

Glad the speech was made as more people will take it seriously. The penny has finally dropped with a few people I know , who also happen to be defending their lack of social distancing over the past week!! Hmm(I'll remind them of this in a few weeks time when we get the real numbers!!)

Unfortunately there will still be people out there who think they're above this and self employed, like my partner, who will have no choice but continue to work (on building site) as self employed entitled to 4K rather than 24k for PAYE workers. They pay their taxes too!!??

I think they will have to define this a bit more over the next day or two! I don't think they've come this far to only come this far. But as for enforcing it, surely they will have to be arranging the army as we speak?

alreadytaken · 23/03/2020 22:09

too late - should have been done sooner.

Cant see this helping the panic buying.

Wont be enforced in rural areas unless your neighbours report you.

Casino218 · 23/03/2020 22:11

Yep seen convoys of Army heading into Leeds. I think they are the enforcers! Hope they round up all the covidiots.

confusedbeyond · 23/03/2020 22:12

My boss text me expecting me to be in work as usual tomorrow.
Why didn't Boris make clear what we should be doing?
I'm not a key worker and can't work from home.
I'm asthmatic and to be honest would rather lockdown.
Where do I stand though? I can't afford not to work, if I refuse to go in will I get government help with wages?

notimagain · 23/03/2020 22:13

Yes but why are we still allowing planes to land here? Surely we should close our country to outside flights to minimise people from abroad bringing the virus here?

In a word.. freight.

Those little essentials produced in other parts like pharmaceuticals/drugs..

Passengers numbers may be through the floor but that frees up weight to carry even more tonnes and tonnes of the stuff, even on passenger aircraft.

Ondalay · 23/03/2020 22:14

Re work.
He said that you're not supposed to travel to work UNLESS you absolutely can not work from home.
So yes lazy peoples - you gotta get to work in the morning.

TotesGodsWill · 23/03/2020 22:14

Objectively I understand and support it because too many people have proved they can’t be trusted not to be dicks when it’s optional.

But it’s really upset and worried me and not really sure why. I’m already wfh and social distancing, was only planning to go out for food, medication and topping up the electric meter. Presumably all things I’m still allowed to do as they’re essential.

MarshaBradyo · 23/03/2020 22:14

So relieved.

lyralalala · 23/03/2020 22:15

Yes but why are we still allowing planes to land here? Surely we should close our country to outside flights to minimise people from abroad bringing the virus here?

The bill going through parliament today included powers to close airports. That'll be why the "come home now or you may not be able to do so" message was given as that's coming next
