I'm relieved. How about you?

He grinds coffee beans ffs. How is that essential?

Because he can't do it at home.

daisypond · 23/03/2020 21:43

All gatherings of more than two people in public - excluding people you live with - are banned” So in theory you could go out with everyone in your household, and 2 more who dont live in your household. Is this not just like before? That could be a gathering of 6 or 8 potentially.
No, you have misunderstood. You are not allowed to be in any gatherings of more than two people, - unless they are people you live with.

PinkSpring · 23/03/2020 21:44

the idiots who couldn't listen have fucked it up for everyone.....

Right so supermarkets remain open, what about local corner shops, pharmacies, takeaways? Are they open?

PegLegAntoine · 23/03/2020 21:44

My main worry is that none of it will be enforced anyway. “Essential” is too open to interpretation and the fact people can claim they’re doing something for a vulnerable neighbour is easily abused too

Bathroom12345 · 23/03/2020 21:45

I am teaching DS to drive. Can I go out with him but not obviously leave the confines of the car? We live in a quiet area.

Alyic · 23/03/2020 21:45

He hadn't a choice really, people aren't taking any notice. My brother has just had the text from the doctor to stay home for 12 weeks, he has copd and is the most uncooperative person ever, I've reminded him we lost a parent whilst we were young and please don't do the same to his daughter.

Yes, I think so.

Yes.

tonyaster

I bet they do

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 23/03/2020 21:46

The more people take the piss the more detailed and draconian the measures will become. People ignored social distancing so we get a lockdown.

If clearly non essential businesses are forcing staff to travel to work then at some point they will be put on a list of non essential businesses that must now close.

If he had spelt out all the nuanced detail in his speech then he would still be talking now. I am sure more detailed guidance will follow.

CrowleysBentley · 23/03/2020 21:46

The Telegraph says

All non-essential shops are closing, excluded are food shops, pharmacies, corner shops, hardware stores, petrol stations, pet shops, post offices, banks, newsagents and shops inside hospitals.

midgebabe · 23/03/2020 21:46

Post offices will stay open

userxx · 23/03/2020 21:47

Unless your business is essential then you will be forced to close and rightly so

I don't think so. We are in a shitstorm financially, wiping out all non essential small businesses over night is just going to create an even bigger shitstorm.

RogueV · 23/03/2020 21:47

It’s the right thing.

Sockwomble · 23/03/2020 21:48

"Unless your business is essential then you will be forced to close and rightly so"

That isn't what he said.
He said people should only be travelling to work if the work cannot be done from home.

february08baby · 23/03/2020 21:48

there aren't enough police to be everywhere, that's the thing

LightACandleHoney · 23/03/2020 21:48

I feel sick.

I’m relieved and agree that this is absolutely necessary - and probably should have been done before.

At the same time, tonight is the first time that I actually feel scared.

We will be staying home and not even going out to exercise unless we get properly desperate. We have a postage stamp garden but we can use that for fresh air (Along with windows open in the house all day long when it’s not raining!) and workout DVDs for fitness. Aiming to have us going out to exercise max once or twice a week.

Regarding food though, we are pretty much out - all fresh stuff is done, and we’re running low on store cupboard supplies too. We’ve been self isolating for 10days already and can’t leave until Friday. We’ve just about enough food to get us through but we are scraping the barrel. Why? Because we didn’t stockpile and panic buy, and because we’re a family of 6 so even though we don’t over eat, we still get through a lot of food. I’m properly worried now about being able to get enough food in the shops when we can finally leave the house. We want to follow the best guidelines and only shop once a week, but with restrictions and empty shelves, combined with a starting point of almost empty cupboards and a totally empty fridge, I genuinely don’t know how we do that for 6 people.

I’ve already accepted that we will lose the house we’ve waited so long to buy, but the thought of being stuck in a very small house (was meant to only be very temporary and has now been 10months) for the foreseeable future makes me literally cry.

As for all the talk of road blocks and army patrols - I live in NI. I didn’t want my DC to experience what I grew up with - tonight that seems a hell of a lot closer

Tonyaster · 23/03/2020 21:48

Not at the moment. Particularly if the staff don't have to use public transport to get there and distancing is put in place at the workplace

bruminbrom · 23/03/2020 21:49

Nope. If you work in a library in Bromley you are still forced to go to work even though the libraries themselves are CLOSED to the public. This is on the orders of the local council who are paying a contractor to run their libraries. Stupid and pointless.

Beansandcoffee · 23/03/2020 21:49

Christ. It’s not difficult. Just stay in the house if you can. We need to stop the spreading of this virus. If you have to go to work then do so. Just stay away from other people, use the 2m rule and wash your hands etc etc. We are not children. If we can’t do this don’t worry the government is passing a bill on Thursday to bring the military out.

userxx · 23/03/2020 21:51

What about traffic wardens? Will they be out and about.

midgebabe · 23/03/2020 21:51

Small businesses need t9 find a way to go into hibernation.

Carry on regardless makes the whole thing go on for longer in the end because the nhs would collapse if millions need treatment at the same time and society disruption would be much worse.

So hibernate your business now, or risk the collapse or your business , kill other people as you go along and risk your own life within a few months

whoami24 · 23/03/2020 21:51

I find the work thing confusing, my dp works for an online only clothing retail, he drives to work so guess they will stay open until it's only key workers?

So a lot off folks will still be working? Builders, road workers, plumbers, banks, public transport, warehouse, manufacturing, non essential delivery drivers, post office, postal workers, gardeners

I guess only key workers will be next?

But this should stop people flocking to playgrounds, seaside, tourist towns. Does this mean all takeaways should shut because I think they should or people will flock to towns.

But supermarkets are going to be hell tomorrow and they need to only let so many people in at a time, lock trollies away, a basket full can get a weeks supply

PolloDePrimavera · 23/03/2020 21:52

I don't think he was vague. And he didn't say lockdown I think on purpose as it might-- incite some the types who have already been mingling.-- I reckon he's going to see if we behave now and then, if need be, go down the paperwork/fines route.
Actually I'm contradicting myself, how will this all be enforced?

potter5 · 23/03/2020 21:52

Yes but why are we still allowing planes to land here? Surely we should close our country to outside flights to minimise people from abroad bringing the virus here?

In terms of work, surely if you work in an office of at least 100 people you will be more than a group of 2 and should close down for at least 3 weeks?
