I'm relieved. How about you?

OP posts:
Metoyoutoo · 23/03/2020 21:31

Just received another message to say we are to ignore that first message and don’t come in.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 23/03/2020 21:31

What's changed? People will continue to ignore him. Just look at the images of the massive crowds crammed into supermarket doors only today.

You can't argue with stupid.

jasjas1973 · 23/03/2020 21:32

At least these measures are immediate but i really don't see how anything will be enforced, i'm more likely to hear a cuckoo than see a police car.
If you are going to see friends family etc people will just say "i'm going shopping" we don't have ID cards so this is going to be a 'mare.

KeepWashingThoseHands · 23/03/2020 21:32

It was necessary and inevitable.

Apparently some people (and companies) are unable to do the right and sensible thing so their choices get removed.

One way or the other no one gets out of this easy.

hoxtonbabe · 23/03/2020 21:32

@JTTWC

Exactly if the parks are open people will still go there to gather and chill and seeing it as a day out especially as the weather is getting nicer. If you want to take in the air go for a stroll to the top of the road and back, take a walk around the block, there is no need to have parks open

QuimJongUn · 23/03/2020 21:33

Key metre for your electric: Phone the company-they're meant to be just letting you have it, so don't worry

They absolutely are not. Npower's 'advice' to me today was to get a friend, relative or neighbour to go to the shop to top up for you. Not an option for me, or for many millions of customers I would imagine. Can't wait to be stuck at home for weeks with no gas, electricity, internet or phone.

Metoyoutoo · 23/03/2020 21:33

Unless your business is essential then you will be forced to close and rightly so

mynameiscalypso · 23/03/2020 21:33

The thing is, he can't give absolutely crystal clear guidance for every situation in a 10 minute speech. It has to be broad and high level otherwise he'd still be going through scenarios now and nobody would be listening. I'm sure further guidance will be published later tonight/tomorrow that will answer the majority of the specific questions around particular circumstances.

Forza14 · 23/03/2020 21:34

Jesus wept. It’s not that fucking difficult.

By closing all non-essential shops, shutting pubs/bars/restaurants/theatres, giving police the powers to intercede if groups congregate outside MASSIVELY reduces the rate at which this virus transmits.

Which is all they are trying to do.

Nothing “woolly” or unclear about tonight’s statement at all Hmm

SuperlativeScrubs · 23/03/2020 21:36

Waiting for the Fallout, when idiots who haven't been listening still refuse to listen.

Badtasteflump · 23/03/2020 21:37

I'm so confused about the work aspect of this, it really needs to be clarified. Which jobs count as 'essential to travel to if you can't work from home'? Is it any business where home working isn't possible, or is it only essential (key worker) jobs?

Bobsandbitz · 23/03/2020 21:37

Relieved. Scared about the economy and jobs, but in the grand scheme of things..... small fish!
The sooner we do this, the sooner normal life can resume.

Forza14 · 23/03/2020 21:37

Can't wait to be stuck at home for weeks with no gas, electricity, internet or phone

Will you be? Where do you normally top up?

TabbyMumz · 23/03/2020 21:38

“All gatherings of more than two people in public - excluding people you live with - are banned”
So in theory you could go out with everyone in your household, and 2 more who dont live in your household. Is this not just like before? That could be a gathering of 6 or 8 potentially.

Tonyaster · 23/03/2020 21:38

It is any business where home working isn't possible. This is what they did in Italy then locked it down further later.

Harpingon · 23/03/2020 21:38

I hope it stops the family picnics / play days in the parks or they will have to close them completely.

GrouchoMrx · 23/03/2020 21:38

Too late. Should have been done 10 days ago.

Alialialiali · 23/03/2020 21:38

@Namechangervaver
But no guidance as to what constitutes essential. How long is a piece of string?
As long as it needs to be to get to herd immunity.
Not sure why everyone's unhappy... we got a lockdown. Even the papers are callilng it a lockdown.

FeelingCrap54 · 23/03/2020 21:38

He said lockdown without actually mentioning the word “lockdown.”

I thought he was pretty clear tbh.

Obviously the devil will be in the detail and I suspect the police will be under a lot of pressure given the massive cuts. Unless of course they have a massive recruitment for special constables to help police it all.
Feel some sympathy for the police right now.

Forza14 · 23/03/2020 21:39

Can you work from home? No? Then go to work. It is not the case that all “non-essential” businesses are closing. It’s up to individual firms.

Tonyaster · 23/03/2020 21:39

Unless your business is essential then you will be forced to close and rightly so no, they won't .

CrowleysBentley · 23/03/2020 21:41

I would hope that they will keep post offices open so that people can top up electricity keys and gas cards etc, even if only reduced hours, and launderettes for those without laundry facilities, banks, pet supply shops, vets, as well as pharmacies and supermarkets, but nobody has said yet. Have they? I wonder if takeaways will close?

I'd imagine lots of places will try it on, and then a proper list of which places are allowed to be kept open will be published.

WhatTheHellHappenedArgh · 23/03/2020 21:41

It's too open to interpretation to employers. My brother's employer says he has to go in as he is a "key worker" involved in food production. He grinds coffee beans ffs. How is that essential?

Reptilemummy · 23/03/2020 21:41

My lovely Dogwalker2 has had to throw in the towel. I will still be paying her regardless.
So many self employed struggling 😤😪

KeepWashingThoseHands · 23/03/2020 21:42

Very clear to me what was said and implied.
