No more Sainsbury's deliveries

They will now only deliver to you if they have identified you as elderly, vulnerable or disabled. I assume other supermarkets will do the same.

I'm glad they have done this, but at the same time worried that the supermarkets will be busier germ factories than ever!

I do think it's good but also not been thought through properly. I live in rural Cornwall, don't drive and only a tiny local community shop who've already said they're prioritising the local elderly, so I've been avoiding that shop.

Plus I'm 29 weeks pregnant so avoiding most people in general. I've had my delivery slot for the past 2 weeks, and been waiting patiently trying to make food last for myself, partner and 3 year old. We rely on home deliveries at the best of times.

Already expecting hardly a thing to turn up. Do pregnant people come into the vulnerable category? And how would you prove such a thing. I'll have to see if any local veg shops and butchers are taking any new orders and deliver in my very remote village.

Also what about those self isolating or suspect they have corona are they expected to go to the shop and put everyone at risk?!

adaline · 23/03/2020 09:18

I actually think this is a really bad decision.

They're basically encouraging people outside and into shops when all official advice is to stay home and avoid others.

Incontinencesucks · 23/03/2020 09:19

It's a poorly thought out knee jerk reaction that will make shops busier not quieter thus spreading the virus further and endangering more key workers and vulnerable people.

XmasRibbons · 23/03/2020 09:20

Are they cancelling existing delivery slots?

alloutoffucks · 23/03/2020 09:26

Everyone is expected to have 2 weeks of food in so they can self isolate if they get symptoms. This was said a bit ago.

Sparrowlegs248 · 23/03/2020 09:28

@alloutoffucks I'm.self isolating as we have symptoms. After 2 weeks I'll be back working as a key worker.

woodchuck99 · 23/03/2020 09:28

Why would it make more people shop? If they are doing the same amount of deliveries the number of people that need to go to the shops will be the same. It just means that those getting deliveries are more likely to be vulnerable.

Makinganewthinghappen · 23/03/2020 09:29

Delish - that will have to be a back plan but it costs about £14 each way to the supermarket so I think unless there is 6 feet of snow I will be walking the kids down the beach (quickest way!)

If anyone sees an irate woman walking along a beach with a little train of kids following her all pulling suitcases that will be me .

I have to say it’s getting harder and harder to keep the atmosphere light and happy for the kids

RandomlyChosenName · 23/03/2020 09:30

My Mum has never had delivery from a supermarket. She doesn’t even have the internet. She is in the highest vulnerable category.

Yesterday they said only food parcels if you have no family living near by. I do live near by, but I have Asthma. I also wasn’t previously signed up to delivery (although have managed a click and collect and a delivery slot in the next few weeks). We’ll see what we can get both for my family (children) and for my Mum.

If my husband goes into the shop, he might catch it and would give it to me.

The choice is suffocating death by virus or starvation.

DH are already going without so the children can eat and sharing what we have with my Mum. My son asked me if we were having dinner tonight earlier :(

SFCA · 23/03/2020 09:32

I am so pleased they have done this. It is designed for anybody that has now been told they must not leave their home for 12 weeks. I know shopping is really difficult at the moment but the elderly and vulnerable how now been told that they can’t do it for 12 weeks!

adaline · 23/03/2020 09:33

Why would it make more people shop? If they are doing the same amount of deliveries the number of people that need to go to the shops will be the same. It just means that those getting deliveries are more likely to be vulnerable.

Because Sainsbury's are arbitrarily deciding who can and can't receive food deliveries.

What about those who aren't technically vulnerable who are having to self-isolate for some reason? What about those who live with non-vulnerable people? Do they still get a delivery? What if Sainsburys' decides you don't fit their criteria and you have no other way of getting food?

Michelleoftheresistance · 23/03/2020 09:34

Tesco have neither any click and collect or delivery slots available in my town for the three weeks they've released.

LucaFritz · 23/03/2020 09:34

How are they planning on proving this ? Ive been told to self isolate with 8 week old DS for 12 weeks and we live alone with no one else for help so i cant exactly traipse to the shop miles away with him in his pram Confused hoping they ask for some sort of proof or conformation if they are just going by dates of birth that will never work

alloutoffucks · 23/03/2020 09:36

I don't know how you prove it. Been trying to ring them but just constantly busy I do have neighbours though who will buy for me if I really need them to. They know my situation.

alloutoffucks · 23/03/2020 09:38

@adaline What do you think people who are vulnerable and have not been able to get a delivery slot have been having to do?

RandomlyChosenName · 23/03/2020 09:39

Can’t the supermarkets massively up their click and collect service? That must be fairly easy and time efficient?

woodchuck99 · 23/03/2020 09:42

How are they planning on proving this ? Ive been told to self isolate with 8 week old DS for 12 weeks and we live alone with no one else for help

If you've had a letter telling you to self isolate that will be proof. The letter will tell you the ways to get help too if you have no one else to help you.

alloutoffucks · 23/03/2020 09:43

Having staff pick out your groceries is way more time consuming than you going into the store yourself and doing it. So I suspect they just don't have the staff.

LucaFritz · 23/03/2020 09:44

Ill be contacting my midwife and health visitor for proof then they cant self isolate people for 12 weeks and leave them with no means of getting food especially those of us with no nearby support to get things for us home delivery is literally my only option

woodchuck99 · 23/03/2020 09:45

What about those who aren't technically vulnerable who are having to self-isolate for some reason?

If they aren't technically vulnerable then they route have to self isolate for long which means that they should have enough food anyway.

What about those who live with non-vulnerable people? Do they still get a delivery?

I think they should still get a delivery.

What if Sainsburys' decides you don't fit their criteria and you have no other way of getting food?

Sainsbury's aren't the only shop in the country.

woodchuck99 · 23/03/2020 09:46

route would

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 23/03/2020 09:46

The real issue is that the government need to introduce rationing.

Not putting it on the overstressed supermarkets. They have tried limiting purchase amounts, but people are just going in and out more.

In this digital age, surely they could create online ration points? No points no ration.

bigyellowduck · 23/03/2020 09:49

what if your not in those groups but live rurally and cant drive so getting food will be impossible.
@Jenasaurus Surely that is a lifestyle issue?

Not really - my DP get a sainsbury's delivery every 2-3 weeks and use the local shop daily. No deliveries available and the shop is stripped bare. So their lifestyle has been fine for the past 48 years (although they only stooped riving recently as DF has cancer) but doesn't work now.

alloutoffucks · 23/03/2020 09:49

Deciding to self isolate may be a sensible choice. But of course different from those who are being told to self isolate.

adaline · 23/03/2020 09:57

If they aren't technically vulnerable then they route have to self isolate for long which means that they should have enough food anyway.

Have you seen the state of some of the supermarket shelves? A lot of people won't have enough food for four days, let alone fourteen.
